WingZNut13 99 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 I think now that Z is still here. Holland needs to work on getting Franzen a long term deal. He bring a lot of speed and size to the front line. I think with Pavel, Z, and Franzen (not to mention a few others), the Wings will be looking really good for plenty years to come. The cap is a huge issue but I think Franzen will settle for a little less to stay with the Wings and win at least two more cups.

I use to work with someone that worked for him at the Fox Theater and he said Illitch was an ahole to work with. I'm sure he is different with players but in a regular work environment he is not a nice boss.

On another note, this is why I love the Red Wings. We not only create amazing players, we have a franchise that makes them actually WANT to stay here, no matter what that means doing to their paychecks. I'm sure he is different with players but in a regular work environment he is not a nice boss. Or maybe that guy you knew sucked at his job? Anyways, all the comments from the press conference were great and Holland got me pretty optimistic about Marian staying. I missed Yzerman's comments though, can anyone fill me in? Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 (edited) Anyways, all the comments from the press conference were great and Holland got me pretty optimistic about Marian staying. I missed Yzerman's comments though, can anyone fill me in? He had a bit of long-winded, rambling response, but the gist of his words was that he had the good fortune to play with Hank and be in the locker room with him so he knew the type of player he was, and so he was confident along with the rest of management that a 12 year deal was a good plan. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 12 years? That's a little too long for me, but Hank will be a Wing for life and that's what matters.

Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Great signing! I'm glad Zetterberg and Datsyuk seem to be headed towards playing their whole careers with the 'Wings! Now, that leaves us with roughly 9M to spend for next year. We have 7 players on our back end signed (all but Chelios), we need a back-up for Ozzie (Conklin/Howard/Larsson), and we have Hossa, Hudler, Sammy, Franzen, and Kopecky to sign. Our goalie should cost under a million (.75M), and I think we could definitely get Hudler for cheap, along the lines of 2M. Also, it would probably be wise to sign Leino and Helm to pretty cheap contracts, around (.850M, .6M are their current salaries). I wouldn't mind Sammy coming back for relatively cheap, say 1.5M. But even then, that's 5.8M right there, and leaves us with 7 defensemen, 2 goalies, and 11 forwards, and 3.2M to buy another forward (or two, for depth). Ken Holland is going to have to be magic to pull off keeping Hossa. Even Franzen will be difficult. EDIT: These figures are assuming the cap stays put. Hmm, so only 3.2 million to get Hossa? How bout trade Flip for some picks, or maybe a 4th line grinder (opens up 3 million -450k if we get a 4th liner in return), and not resign Sammy. That leaves us anywhere from 6.7-7.2 million to resign hossa and someone else, not ideal, but defenently possible
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Almost got into a horrific pile-up accident along US-23 North in Genesee on my way to school, and then nearly flew off the road at a I-69 off ramp, though shortly after this news story broke and completely made my day. Real happy to know he'll be a Wing for the rest of his career pending the unthinkable.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 It includes a NTC as well according to swedish newspaper expressen, not that wings would trade him but could be worth to notice.. How many wings players have NTC? How does it look like on other teams? As far as I know, if we count Zetterberg in... Cleary, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Stuart, Draper, and Rafalski all have NTC. As far as other teams, here's a list of players with NTCs on the NHLSCAP.com website. http://www.nhlscap.com/no_trade.htm
FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 The 28-year-old Swede will make $7.4 million next season, which does not exceed Nicklas Lidstrom's salary, as the Wings promised Lidstrom he would always be the highest paid member of the team. But the year after that, in 2010-11 - when Lidstrom will either be retired or on a new deal - Zetterberg's salary jumps to $7.75 million. In the first nine years of the extension, Zetterberg will be paid between $7 million and $8 million per year, but in the final three years, he is scheduled to make $3 million, $1 million and $1 million, respectively. The extra two years at $1 million each are designed to help to bring down the average and the annual cap hit. It would be a surprise if Zetterberg ever plays long enough to fulfill the 11th and 12th years of the deal. If he retires after 10 years, he would receive $71 million, or an average of $7.1 million per year, which is considerably higher than the $6.08 million cap hit the Wings are assessed. per tsn - http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=264864&...os=topStory_nhl

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Man oh man I think this sets a very, very good presedent for the rest of the players we're trying to sign this year... How long does Hudler's contract have to be to get him to take 2.5 million per? It'd have to be reallllllly long since he's still got tons of upside that makes it impossible to guess what he'd be worth in 4 years.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 I'm just over the moon that we don't ever have to worry about Hank playing for another team or even that we have to go through something like this again. He'll retire a Red Wing, which is what every player should want.
