Sweet. 12 years is really long, but if it keeps the cap number down to $6 million it's ok with me. Remember- if Z retires his remaining salary doesn't count against the cap. Zetterberg's main concern is health... so hopefully he retires when his health becomes debilitating.

Wow...12 years, that seems excessive at first glance. Zetterberg going to play until he's 40? Lets hope his back holds up...I guess thats the only way to work out the money situation though.

I love Z. I just hope he's able to play for 12 years, with the back going out several times a season. He's a horse in the playoffs, so I guess that is what matters.

I sure wish I had that kind of job security, never mind the dollar amount. That much money is beyond my comprehension, anyway.

If it's 10 years, regardless of the money bad deal, if it's 4-6, maybe even 7, not so bad. For a guy with injury problems that he has, I dont know how you can give him a long term deal for big money. Case in point, DiPietro. But I do like Zetterberg, and he's a horse in the playoffs, so not bad.

Um...do the math. If we sign him to a seven year deal for like 10 mil a season he gets like 70 mil. If we sign him instead for a 10 year deal for 7 mil, he gets like 70 mil. He gets the same money, we have 3 mil a season now when 3 mil is a lot more then it will be in cap (assuming we have the same system) in 7-10 years. Do you get it now? This is win-win. And Z gets to play on a better team now and we get to keep him for cheaper dollars later in his career. I see this comment over and over and over on the site and it astounds me that people don't get why we're doing this and how it helps us hold onto our team and even talk about guys like Franzen and Hossa who we'd have so little left to go after if we weren't spreading it out.

It includes a NTC as well according to swedish newspaper expressen, not that wings would trade him but could be worth to notice.. How many wings players have NTC? How does it look like on other teams?

12 years?!? Love the deal right now but a 38 year-old Zetterberg is NOT worth a 6 million cap hit. I would have preferred something like 9 years @ 7 million per year.

Again great deal right now not so good for the long term future even if the cap goes up to like $80 million in 10 years (btw @ 3% annual inflation the cap SHOULD be at 76 million in 10 years)

Zetterberg is worth more than 7 million a year.. spread out he's making less. We won't have all the players we have forever. Lidstrom, Stuart, Rafalski will not be 10 years from now.

Holland will see that things work out.. Hank should be top 3 paid, he is worth it, and like others have said if he is put on LTIR or retires early it isn't counted against the cap. It's a good day for the Wings and their fans!

So great to hear!!! When they Keating was talking to Z before the game and asked him about when the extension would be signed, Z smiled and said "soon." No kidding.

I wondered if they were going to work this out over the weekend and have something to announce when they got back home.

After thinking about it I like this deal a bit more. If Z retires in 10 years his contract comes off the books so then it becomes a 10 year 60 million contract which is great. If he remains healthy and well-conditioned (conditioning is a given), then he could well be productive into his late 30s a la Sundin and Alfredsson. In this scenario a cap hit of 6 million for a 37-38 year old Zetterberg (which assuming 3% inflation would be equivalent to a cap hit of 4.5 million right now) is OK. The only risk is his chronic back problems but for a top 10 forward in the NHL that's a big risk that you HAVE to be willing to take.

So regardless of how much this contract is frontloaded, and how many $1m/years Holland tacked onto the end of the contract, the average cap hit is 6M/year, right? So when he's 40 years old and getting paid $1M for whatever production he makes (hopefully good), it will still be a $6M cap hit, right?

6M per year is effing nuts. 12 years is long, yeah, but at a 6M cap hit? I cant complain in the least.

Agreed. That's a ridiculous hometown discount, if it's for real. I will be very pleased if this turns out to be accurate.

On top of this, I don't think a good amount of people are recognizing the magnitude of this signing going forward. Z signing for this large of a hometown discount sets a precedence to all future Red Wings players over the next decade. While this may not be as stringent as the "Lidstrom Cap", its sets Kenny and Co. up for the next 12 years to say to every player during contract time, "this is what your Captain did. This how much he believes in this team and wants to be here? How much do you?"

Kenny and Co. once again find a way to say, "Cap be damned! We'll beat it."

I love this deal. My question though is since the last 2 years are for 1million each could the Wings buy him out for the 2 mill at the end of the contract or would it cost 12 mil?
