Osgood has worst save percentage in the league

I watch every game and have seen time after time Ozzie letting in soft goals, playing too far back in the crease and all around not looking very confident. Why don't you become one of those posters and leave.

It's an unfortunate fact that, sooner or later, quality posters will completely desert this board and leave it to the "fantasy hockey trade/NHL2K9" crowd, simply because they can't stand the frustration of dealing with the kiddies.

And that will be a shame, because there was a time when this was the ultimate Wings message board, and Matt worked his ARSE off to get it there.

Oh.....

And thank you for your ever-so-gracious invitation to get the Hell out. Very hospitable of you, I must say.

I'm quite sure the Wings believe they can. I have every confidence in Ozzie in crunch time.

The Wings should start Conks the next two games and then give the reins to Osgood for a while. Osgood needs a lot of starts to try to get back in top form. If he still plays poorly, Conks gets the reins.

Everyone has a different definition of a quality poster, so you are on shakey ground to say that "quality" posters are leaving. Anyone who plays NHL 2K9 should not be posting on this board because they are morons. EA Sports versions of NHL video games are much better. Frustration is part of the internet. If you cannot handle, get the hell out. A quality poster would be able to handle some frustration rather than run away. And you are most welcome for the invitation. It still stands by the way.

I've watched every game and Ozzie lets in a soft goal at least once per game, it seems. I fail to see how that's NOT his fault. Granted, the defensive lapses lead to some goals that aren't his fault, but he's got to stop letting in ones that he should stop.

How many soft goals did he allow against Minnesota? In the 6-1 Win against Dallas? In the 4-3 Win against Anaheim.

Hyperbole. Nothing more.

Finally, if we think back, an alarming trend has taken place with Osgood. He started last year on fire and his save percentage was hovering around .930 at the mid season point. He finished the year with a .914. In other words, his save percentage dropped quite a bit in the second half of the season, which resulted in his season percentage to drop. I don't have the time, nor the energy to figure out his save percentage in the second half of the year but it must have been around .900. This year it's at .880. So, in the past full regular season of hockey, his save percentage is under .900. It's time people quit making excuses and realize that right now, his play is a very serious threat to the team's chances of repeating.

Doesn't take much time, and even less energy, to realize that Osgood's stats tumbled during that 11 game slide the Wings went on last February, when they were riddled with injuries from top to bottom.

One game in particular which hurt Osgood's stats a ton was the game against Nashville, when he was pulled after allowing 2 goals on 4 shots, in about 9 minutes worth of play.

His stats for that game alone were ~20.00 GAA and .250 SVP.

Once again, the entire Team was slumping, and they were missing 2 of their top 4 Defenseman.

To complain because his stats dipped from absolutely spectacular to merely damned good, and to call that an "alarming trend" is, in my opinion, simply more hyperbole.

I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment.

Ozzie is an average goalie - and the players know that. But he's well-loved by his teammates and this entire organization. Detroit is his home. These guys have formed off-ice personal relationships with him.

And I'm certain they remember his playoff performance last season - which brought him to a Cup in the first place. Babcock and the Red Wings franchise don't keep starting Osgood out of sympathy. They start him because they believe in him. They know he hits bumps in the road but they also know he's capable of turning his game around.

I don't believe, for one second, that any of the players lose confidence because Osgood is in net.. or that they play better with Conklin just because they feel they have a better chance of winning.

He was far better than an everage goalie level. But the problem is his playing level right now is way lower than the even level of average goalies.

Awesome. He didn't let in soft goals in 3 games. Somehow I think he played in more than 3 games this season though.

That's what I just said about your problem. If goalie has only few games and many terrible games, are you gonna be comfortable to see the goalie players in the net?

Games you mentioned was only 3 games. You just sound to protect Osgood regardless what he has done so far this season. Then if some say Osgood sucks; the game against the Sharks, Stars, Coyotes, Leafs, Senators, and some other teams that score around 3 or 4 goals on him, can you say it is good? Even the worst goalie in the league can have 2 or 3 good games depends on himself condition.

We are talking about the whole story of Osgood this season, not only particular games that he serviced some good performances. According to your statemnet, no goalie in the league should be blamed because every goalie has some good games.

How many do I have to repeat? Stats is still number but stats is not a joke at all. Don't deny the genuine story going under this team right now.

Did you conviently leave out Ozzie's .930 save percentage and 1.55 GAA in the playoffs last season? Ozzie was one of the main reasons the Red Wings even have the chance to repeat. It's easy to pick-and-choose your stats to skew Ozzie's success. Conklin let in two pretty soft goals yesterday or are they only "soft goals" when Ozzie lets them in?

The common denominator is the Red Wings defensive effort on most nights is lacking badly. We need Ozzie and the defense to improve before the playoffs. Ozzie can't improve by sitting on the bench. Nothing against Conklin, but the Red Wings are better off with Ozzie in goal when the games matter the most. I don't see any reason to dismiss Ozzie so quickly when there is plenty of blame to go around for the Red Wings "slump" at the moment.

LOL.....

I rest my case.

For the record, it doesn't have anything to do with "handling" anything. A reasonable person will only stay in a room full of the stench of flatulence for so long, before either looking for a solution to the smell, or outright leaving the room.

It's not "running away" so much as it is a logical decision to not surround yourself with the constant smell of farts.

And thanks again, but I've been here for quite some time. I think I'll stay.

Hopefully someone around here's got some air freshener, or at least the authority to open a window every once in awhile.

Those were only examples......

And examples of his MOST RECENT Games, too.

You know....

The games where both yourself, and Wingsallwin in particular, keep stating that he has made "no improvement".

The whole team is struggling. This goes far beyond just Ozzie's performance in goal.

Basically, our offenses are not struggling. We all know our defenses are on descent right now and not improved well. But we cannot avoid blaming Osgood because he is considered as a starting goalie in this team but he has had only few remarkable games and in other games, he allowed too many soft goals. More important fact is that he has not improved anything during few months from October to today.

If Osgood is not improving, it is not somehow all defense problem. He just seems to have no motivation like last season anymore. Last season, because Dom was in this team, Osgood probably had an ambition to be our first starting goalie over Hasek and that is what boosted him up. But because we won the cup and Dom retired on the off-season, he just looks lost and still think he is captured in a role of starting goalie but the truth is that is a totally wrong thought.

But we know this is a new season. No one discourages about Ozzie's last year's playoff performance and he was great doubtlessly.

The thing I don't know what happened in the summer but Ozzie just looks lost right now no matter how defenses play right now.

We have watched Osgood playing this season more than at least 20 games. I am not talking about letting goal like deflection and some break aways. Osgood sometimes even do not feel comfortable to save some easy shots.

If recent to you is 2 1/2 weeks ago. Even a struggling goalie will have a few good games. His most "recent" game that he won against the Ducks, he gave up 3 goals, which is Ozzie's mo this season.

Osgood has improved.

Since he's come back from his injury, he's made a marked improvement.

If you can't see that, there's no help for you.

I don't know what he has improved. Could you tell me?

Better SV percentage? Better GAA? Better position?

If you think he has made a marked improvement, that is a joke even though I still love Osgood.

You picked the wrong game to cite, Mike.

I was at that Game, behind and to the left of Ozzie's net for the 1st and the 3rd.

He was great in that Game. Not one of those goals can be laid at his feet, and he saved a few that he shouldn't have.

Fail......epic fail.

Congratulations. You attended a hockey game. I'm surprised that you didn't get lost on your way there. I didn't cite that game, you did. I responded to your comment about that specific game. One game does not make Osgood the best goalie in the league. As I said before, even a bad goalie will have a few good games. You can say that he was great, but that is only your thinking. The thinking that has absolutely no credibility what so ever.

With patience......

His play has improved. Perhaps the numbers don't totally reflect it, but his play has improved.

Again....

He was fantastic against Minnesota. He was fantastic against Dallas in the 6-1 Win. He was great in the OT Loss to Dallas, wherein the Dallas announcers stated that he should have gotten at least the 3rd Star of the Game for allowing FIVE goals, on 50 shots. When the opposing Team's announcers, (especially a huge rival Team), gives your goalie props after allowing FIVE goals, he had a good game. He was simply left hanging out to dry. He's the ONLY reason the Wings got a point out of that game, at all. He was very good in Anaheim. He didn't play poorly against San Jose, despite the score. The Wings, in general, played poorly. You can fault him for not "stealing" a game, because he didn't stop the two breakaways his Defense gave up less than 3 minutes apart in the 3rd period, but you can't pin that loss on him. He played well enough to Win in Columbus, (that which you laud Conklin with against the Caps, despite the two soft goals Conks gave up in that game), but his Teammates failed to show up. Unfortunately for the Wings - Nash did NOT fail to show up. He was pulled after allowing two PP goals, and one questionable goal, against Dallas.

His play has improved.

Period. The results are not yet showing in the almighty stat lines, but his play has improved.

Again....

If you can't see that, there's no help for you.

Look, I agree that Ozzie is struggling. That isn't the basis of my argument by any stretch. My defense of Ozzie comes more from the fact that I think most of the blame needs to be directed at the play of the defense. I am more concerned with the effort the Red Wings have played with on defense than I am with the play of either goalie. If the defense comes around, so will the goalies.

I can somewhat understand your point about Ozzie using Dom as motivation. However, just judging what I can gather about Ozzie and his personality, this stretch of play bothers Ozzie more than we can tell. He loves the Red Wings probably more than any player ever has. He's frustrated with his struggles even more than we as fans are. There are always going to be people who doubt Ozzie, which is fine. I have confidence that Ozzie will get better. It doesn't make sense to give up on the guy who was just the backstop of a championship eight months ago. I suppose that is to be expected when the Red Wings hit a losing streak. Somebody has to shoulder the blame.

I know your point about the Wings team itself has played sloppy. What I am talking about is stop being delusional of Osgood's performance this season.

Against the Ducks, he was out of position again on the 3rd goal and people just here look to say Osgood was good in that game because he robbed Perry just at the last minute of 3rd period when it was EN for Anaheim. But I don't say his performance was bad, but he was not great, but enough, and it is what I expect him to be as a fan.

The score does not lie and yes I watched the game we lost against the Stars in OT and he made some spectacular saves but allowing 5 goals is no excuse. Did you watch the game against the Sharks? He let 6 goals in and when Nabokov was not even great, but he made some saves on the breakaway.

Even though any goalie in the NHL makes some unbelievable saves, if any goalie allows more than 4 or 5 goals in one game, there is no excuse for stating that goalie's perfomance is brutal in that game.

Waaaaait a minute.....

Didn't you just say, earlier in a different thread, that Conklin was "good enough" against the Caps, but that the Team was terrible?

And did you not, on page 3 of this VERY thread, make the comment:

And the thread you made Conklin against the caps, did you even watch the game? How many good saves did Conk make? I know the 3rd goal was soft....

So which is it?

4 or 5 goals, (as Conklin gave up to the Caps and the 'Yotes, respectively), is "brutal", or it's "good enough"?

As you posted above:

Even though any goalie in the NHL makes some unbelievable saves, if any goalie allows more than 4 or 5 goals in one game, there is no excuse for stating that goalie's perfomance is brutal in that game.

Which. Is. It?

Make up your mind. Because you keep contradicting yourself, which is what I've been contending all along.

Or is it, simply.....

When it's Osgood, it's "brutal". But when it's Conklin, it's "good enough".

Go back and read your very own words, because that is precisely what you've just said.
