Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Nothing new, but I figured it'd be something interesting to ready anyway. Read.
Peleshob 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 Not much in the way of logic here, but it's a nice idea. If Detroit can keep both for cheap, then great. I would personally take Franzen at 3.5 and Hossa at 6 if we can only have one of them. I jump on either of those deals. I think that both players are great and bring something unique to the team. In the event that they lose Franzen, I think Cleary fills in for him as a net-presence. He's not as good as Franzen, obviously, but I still feel that he could suffice. Cleary does a good enough job in front of the net - and I think if Franzen were to be let go and he was put in the position to work it more, he could be equally as good as Mule. Cleary works hard for everything he gets out on the ice. This wouldn't be any different, imo.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 You guys may find this interesting. Another poster put this link in the Franzen thread in the Rumors forum. Looks like a long term deal for Franzen isn't that far off base. http://www.windsorstar.com/Sports/Wings+no...2321/story.html "Sources with knowledge of the talks said the Wings are entertaining thoughts of a five-to-eight year deal for Franzen. If the deal is of the longer variety, then the last couple years will likely be similar to Zetterberg's contract. Zetterberg sees his salary drop to $1-million per season in the final two years to reduce the cap hit." In regards to Hossa, nothing much new, but a little bit I suppose: "I know what kind of deal I want. I just want to stay for a long time. "Obviously, this is great to be part of. We'll see how negotiating will go. "It could be a few days, a few months or after the end of the year." Hossa left the distinct impression it wasn't matter of if, but when something might be worked out.
Wingsallwin 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 I would rather to make a deal with another solid goalie instead of signing both. Osgood is now old and if both Larsson and Howard do not come up big, we definately need a consistent goalie as we also regard Nick is coming to the end of his career. When this happens the Wings will have 7.45 to put toward a goaltender. I would like to see how Howard/Larsson pan out before tossing a huge chunk of cash at a goaltender who may or may not play well seeing a limited amounts of shots per game. I didn't mean to get your hopes up. Just thought a little optimism would be good in a time of frustration!
RWK23 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 LOL. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get your hopes up. Just thought a little optimism would be good in a time of frustration! It's all good. In Kenny I trust. If anyone can get it done, it's that man.
LIDDYGIBBY5 1 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 The truth is we don't know how this will turn out because of one uncontrollable factor. Will the salary cap increase, decrease. or remain the same. If it does go up or down, by how much. If it goes up by 3.5 M that means we can re-sign Franzen for little to no change in the amount of cap space available. I still think that some salary is going to have to be moved. My vote is for Val. He has an up side and many teams would want him. Making the amount of salary that would have to come back less because of competition for his services. Kenny has to make an educated guess at what the cap will be next year and sign the right player before playoffs and then hope that the cap doesn't move up less than he anticipated. I really wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now. He could be forced to waive a player at the beginning of next season to get below the number if numbers don't go the right way. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 I guess long-term Zetterberg-type contracts (though maybe not 12yrs) would be the only way to go if we want to keep them both? We can't exactly sign Hossa for 6mil cap hit and 3-4 years. And Franzen wants money too. But if we sign them both for 6+ years, maybe we could get Hossa down to around 6 mil and Franzen around 3? I don't really see any reason why we wouldn't want them both to stay here for a long time.
zenway9 1 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 This writer makes no sense. Near the end of page 1, he says "Is it possible? I think it is, and here's why." Then near the end of page 2, he says "It's going to happen folks. Don't as me how yet." Am I missing something here besides the notion that Franzen and Hossa will magically take a cut in pay to stay in Detroit?
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 This blog is a couple weeks old now and I'm not sure how to take it. All I got from it is this: Wings will keep Zetterberg, Franzen and Hossa simply because they don't let players they want to keep leave. Not a lot of deep analysis done there. redwing_sparty 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 there was an intersting piece on redwings live (or recap) this morning about why players like to stay with the wings, and the way managemnt cares about players and their families.

thedatsyukian 7 Report post Posted February 7, 2009 In order for us to keep all three... realistically, we won't like the contracts very much. They would have to be in the vein of zetterberg's deal.
