Many threads on here regarding the Hossa, Franzen situation... lots of examples of what the lines should look like...how about a reverse thread...

No Hossa, No Franzen.... plenty of cap room...

hmmm...i assume then we don't sign kopecky either, then.

???

maybe swap cleary and 'kader? or do you go with sammy on a lower line to bump leino up to the second line?

then we'd have

leino-flip-huds

sammy-helm-abdelkader

malts-draper-cleary

as our bottom three? maybe we'll pick up a legit enforcer with our extra cap room and do something like:

leino-flip-huds

sammy-helm-cleary

malts-draper-fighter

? i'd still have worries about that bottom line, unless the enforcer is an ott type that can also play a bit. hmmm...

at the same time, i guess if we don't sign hossa OR franzen, we'd have quite a bit of space so maybe they'd go out and get another top-six forward, making it (maybe)

topsixer-flip-huds

sammy-helm-leino

malts-draper-cleary

it's also unsure what grand rapids boys will be up next year, in any case...

...this couldn't be put in the numerous other threads? Just kidding!

...I don't want to think about what this team may look like with out Hossa or Franzen. Which means, they opted to re-sign Hudler instead. :puke:

...#1 priority MUST be Hossa (unless he wants the league max) then sign Franzen or Hudler...

If that somehow happened (I doubt it)

ZDH

Hudler - Flip - Leino

Cleary - Helm - Sammy

Abdelkader - Draper - Kopecky

Maltby

Alternatively

ZDH

Cleary - Flip - Hudler

Leino - Helm - Sammy

Abdelkader - Draper - Kopecky

Maltby

With D & Z separate:

Flip - Dats - Homer (I'm reluctant to put Hudler on a 1st line, yet. Flip seems to do well with Dats)

Cleary/Leino - Z - Hudler

Leino/Cleary - Helm - Sammy

Abdelkader - Draper - Kopecky

Maltby

That's not going to happen. We'll get at least one of them. Why bother trying to figure out a solution for something that won't happen?

Why this thread? Well there are some who speculate it is possible although unlikely they won't get either. Also with the cap space and UFA's it does open up some interesting possibilities particularly when you look at the Goalie and D this year, put it this way this if we need a good goalie or D-man we would have the $$ to do it.

Will they sign one or the other? probably, everything points to it... but every other thread on here has that argument raging...

Seems like the threads have 1 of 2 things in all of them...

1. Keep Hossa, possibly loose Huds and Flip and become a Wings/GR mix of a team

2. Keep Franzen-Hudler - maybe, maybe not have cap space.

Being that the Wings will be a great team even w/o either of them... I thought it would be interesting to explore an alternative.

I like this thread, it's at least different than most of the others, and like it or not it is a possibility. I don't think that it will happen at all but it is possible that Hossa decides that he would like one of those big $80M 9-10 year deals which we won't offer and that Franzen knowing this is his big chance tests free agency and gets a $5.5-6M contract from some bottom dwelling team. AGAIN I really don't think that there is any way that this happens but it is a possibility and give a good opportunity to look at our other guys especially the GR guys and try to figure out how they could be utilized.

This thread is probably a good exercise for the brain but it just won't happen.Somebody will get signed before the deadline whether it be Franzen OR Hossa.I would prefer Hossa honestly,he has proved he can get it done anywhere and it doesn't matter who you put him with he's just an outstanding player on both ends of the rink.Franzen on the other hand is playing with great players around him and probably will pull a "Lapointe" if he signs somewhere else.I'm trying to block out the UNBELIEVABLE playoffs he had last year because that in my opinion just won't happen again.I would love to keep both but if I had to choose gimme Hossa for anther 5 years minimum.

There is a very good possibility that we don't sign both. This is a good thread... so instead of justifying why we can sign both or one, why not follow the OPs directions and post a Wings line up without Hossa and Franzen. We have many threads about Hossa and Franzen, please don't let those spill into this one.

Hudler - Flip - Leino

I agree with others in liking this second line. I think it has a lot of potential. Maybe we could get Filppula to screen some goalie? We could use the extra dough to sign a solid goalie or maybe a fairly decent defenseman.

I know alot of people grimmice at the idea of loosing both, but other than Franzen this is same team that won the cup... If the odity occurs and neither get signed I would like to see them shore up the goalie spot and get 1 or 2 decent offensive defencemen, if not at least 1 good one and another decent forward or possibly even a real enforcer, the playoffs are always a tuff go in the 1st couple rounds because we play very physical teams and I have watched my beloved wings get bounced on more than 1 occasion due to the lack of physical play or a decent enforcer (Calgary and Iginla comes to mind), but that's just my take. If they sign neither it opens some interesting possibilities, especially intersting because of all the young talent they have in GR. Also at some point the GR kids will want their payday as well and it would be a shame if we had to loose them because of the cap.

Obviously, this is a worst-case scenatio, heaven forbid we should lose both of them, but realistically it could happen. Assuming all other free agents sign, here's how I see next year's lineup:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom

Hudler-Filppula-Cleary

Samuelsson-Helm-Leino

Maltby-Draper-Kopecky

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Stuart-Kronwall

Lilja-Ericsson

Osgood

Howard

What I'd like to see happen, when we re-sign both Hossa and Franzen, and Draper, Maltby, Holmstrom, Chelios, and Osgood all retire:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Franzen

Hossa-Filppula-Cleary

Hudler-Helm-Leino

Abdelkader-Haydar-Downey

Lidstron-Rafalski

Stuart-Kronwall

Lilja-Ericsson

Conklin

Howard

Here's a scenario to consider:

We can't re-sign Hossa, and we make a sign-and-trade deal that looks like this,

Franzen, Filppula, Lebda, and prospects/picks to Vancouver for the Sedin twins and a pick

Then the lines would look like this

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom

Sedin-Sedin-Samuelsson

Hudler-Helm-Leino

Maltby-Draper-Kopecky

D pairings the same

In this particular scenario, you forgot Cleary, who would probably make an excellent linemate for the Sedins (physical and sometimes goes to the net, 50 point player with good D).

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom

Sedin-Sedin-Cleary

Leino - Hudler - Sammy

Helm - Draper - Kopecky

Maltby

Don't see that happening realistically, but I actually had very similar lines in EHM, once.

If we lose Franzen and Hossa, then Filppula definitely stays on the roster. But I propose 4 names that I'd like the Wings to consider: Cole, Knuble, Tanguay, Moen.

I really think Tanguay would be a good fit here, and is the kind of talent that would fall between that of Franzen and Hossa. As much as I’d like to find a route to acquire/sign a top 6 physical forward, that’s simply not who the Wings are.

Honestly, with the way the Wings D hasn’t missed Stuart for a second, I say we get him of the books before his NTC kicks in. And Im not just saying this for s***s – I really think its something the Wings should be active about. The cap is going to drop drastically after next season. Are we going to want to be holding nearly 4M in a guy that we can’t trade and who is, at best, a 4th Dman?

In this first scenario, the Wings would be offering a contract probably of at least 4 years to a guy like Tanguay, and that might be a risk they don't want to take, with the uncertainty of the future cap number. But otherwise, I think its a pretty reasonable roster.

Leino @ 2 years, 1.1 per

Hudler @ 3 years, 3M

Tanguay @ 4 years, 4.85 per

Moen @ whatever length, about 700k per.

Leino(1.1) – Datsyuk(6.7) – Holsmtrom(2.25)

Hudler(3) – Hank(6.08) – Tanguay(4.85)

Cleary(2.85) – Filppula(3) – Helm(.6)

Maltby(.88) – Draper(1.58) – Moen (.7)

Downey(.5)

Lidstrom(7.45) – Kronwall(3)

Rafalski(6) – Ericsson(.9)

Lilja(1.2) – Lebda(.65)/Meech(.65)

Osgood(1.4)

Howard(.71)

Total(56.05)

OR...if the Wings wanted to be more careful, and only offer short term contracts to UFAs, then this:

Same contracts for Leino and Hudler, but Knuble, a 36 year old, only gets 2 years - probably the longest contract he'll get from anyone, regardless of the team. But Knuble is a great option for replacing Franzen on the 2nd unit. Knuble is a great garbage goal scorer, and has a junkyard dog work ethic - something the Wings could really use no matter where they are. And then a rebound contract for Cole, whose UFA value could increase drastically after posting subpar numbers this year - a one year contract at ~ 3M per. Cole would likely be intrigued by the possibility of playing on such a great offensive team, likely being centered by one of Datsyuk or Zetterberg which could greatly bolster his offensive numbers on the season.

Leino @ 2 years, 1.1 per

Hudler @ 3 years, 3M

Knuble @ 2 years, 2M per

Cole @ 1 year, 3M

Leino(1.1) – Datsyuk(6.7) – Holsmtrom(2.25)

Hudler(3) – Hank(6.08) – Cole(3)

Cleary(2.85) – Filppula(3) – Knuble(2)

Maltby(.88) – Draper(1.58) – Helm (.6)

Downey(.5)

Lidstrom(7.45) – Kronwall(3)

Rafalski(6) – Ericsson(.9)

Lilja(1.2) – Lebda(.65)/Meech(.65)

Osgood(1.4)

Howard(.71)

Total(55.5)
