Z is next captain! 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Does anyone know why he didn't sign with anyone this year?
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 I don't know exactly why but probably because ever since he left Detroit, save a few seasons in Boston, he's been a bum.

drwscc 212 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 I still rock my Lapointe jersey (probably because it's the only real jersey I have) proudly. I miss that guy. He would have never left for that huge payday if Yzerman hadn't been hurt that year, and he got moved up. I was definitely sad to see him go.

LEBDA22 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Could this be the D Mac story for this season?? Marty on the comeback for a chance at the cup in Detroit? Maybe Kenny is working the phones right now. He would be the cheap grit that this team needs on the 4th line. Just speculation.
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 He's Canadian and he plays physical hockey. No chance we sign him. Just kidding. Seriously, though, I forgot that he hasn't officially retired yet. The guy has done nothing since that big season in 2001.
esteef 2,679 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Me too. He's still one of my favorite Wings from the 90's. Agree. Marty was badass back then. esteef

LEBDA22 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 Would add some toughness and leadership in the locker room. As many others say here Get It Done Kenny!! Probably go for league minimum.
DatsMyWings13 4 Report post Posted February 11, 2009 It would be great to see Lapointe come back for a year or two. He use to be one of my favorites.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Marty was one of the best back in day. I`d love to see him come back, but dont kid yourself. If theres a gritty player the Wings need this year, it`s Neil, no Lapointe.
talex 1 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 why not just call up Downey for Grit, I watch that guy play on GR and he is a human wrecking ball...

If theres a gritty player the Wings need this year, it`s Neil, no Lapointe. Or the Gritty Gary Roberts. As much as I hated him last year and can't stand Cherry gobbling his sausage every chance he gets on HNIC I still wouldn't mind seeing the former Flame on our fourth line for the playoffs. His cap hit is 2mil but at the deadline I think we could afford it, especially if Homer can't come back Gary would provide a nice replacement in front of the net on the odd PP. He still hits hard and has that edge to his game that Drake brought us last year too. Put him with Helm and Draper and we have a pretty good fourth line again. Yzersyukstromberg 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 why not just call up Downey for Grit, I watch that guy play on GR and he is a human wrecking ball... Please quit with the Aaron Downey 'should be called up' stuff....the guy is useless. If Ken Holland saw ANYTHING whatsoever in him, he would have kept him up for more than 1 game this year. Barring major injuries, Downey's days in a Red Wings uniform are over (just my opinion though, so don't hang me for it!)

Since coming back from injury he's got 3 points (2 goals) in 4 games as a 3rd/4th liner. I'm with ya man, Scary Gary would be great for Detroit.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 Didn't like Roberts last season, but yes, I would like to see him. He's one of the few 4th liners out there who doesn't seem to be simply washed up and pushed down on the roster. I also really liked Lapointe. I know he hasn't done much since, but the very few times I've seen games he was in, the commentators always mentioned how he was still a solid player. I'd love to see him come back for a league minimum and add some grit. Downey had some grit, but nothing else. We need a player who can do a little more than hit, and a little more than just score. Barring major injuries, Downey's days in a Red Wings uniform are over (just my opinion though, so don't hang me for it!) Ridiculous statement...calling Downey "useless" while Kopecky is dressing every night cancels out that argument completely. Personally I find it kinda embarrassing the Wings' have managed 7 fights this entire season. The next closest team being Carolina with 19. I'd much rather be closer to the middle of the pack with the Bruins (30) & Sharks (26).
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 why not just call up Downey for Grit, I watch that guy play on GR and he is a human wrecking ball... You're kidding, right? How can you take that from the GR games when he's been so terrible in Grand Rapids? He's been a healthy scratch multiple times, doesn't seem to fight anymore and doesn't put up points. Last game one of our skill players, who's a rookie no less, was being pushed around all of the third period. What happened? The kid got into the fight. If Downey isn't going to stand up for rookies that don't normally fight then what's the point of having him?

Even a guy with a positive attitude like Downey is going to be demoralized when you call him up for a game, he plays with incredible energy (more so than ANYONE on the roster in that game) and the team immediately sends you back down to GR while a ******* clown like Kopecky is assured his position on the 4th line so that he can not score, not fight, not skate, and "hit" like a nancy night in and night out. And no, it doesn't cancel out the argument just cause someone equally useless is playing. "You can't call Player X useless because Player Y is?" What is the sense of that? Mors 201 Report post Posted February 12, 2009 (edited) I didn't realize they were handing out the Stanley Cup based on fights this year. That dastardly Bettman. And no, it doesn't cancel out the argument just cause someone equally useless is playing. "You can't call Player X useless because Player Y is?" What is the sense of that? Well, it's pretty difficult to justify saying that Downey is "useless" when he's actually a decent fighter, whereas Kopecky isn't a decent ANYTHING and the only justification that comes up time and time again is that "he only makes 500k" Edit, and in reference to your initial clever comment, I don't expect to see any cup in Detroit this year since no one the team willing to throw a check anymore. Kronwall has crawled back into his shell, Stuart is gimped for who knows how long and Drake is gone. That leaves us with the oh so tough and terrifying Maltby/Kopecky combo. That'll certainly carry us through the playoffs Edited February 12, 2009 by Mors
