Yzerman Shaping Canada like the Wings

So many favorite Wings playing on so many different teams...You could root for Canada, Russia, Finland, The Czech Republic, Slovkia, and of course Sweden...the way I see it though the right thing to do is route for the USA! That's where I live after all.

I'll still root for Canada. The fact that Sindey Crosby will probably be there will have no bearing on it. I'm sure it will be a good time despite his presence.

Will Crosby really be the #1 center on Team Canada? If Yzerman is looking for a young player who can commit to defense, then he's probably better off choosing Jonathan Toews. Those two know each other well enough anyways.

Funny you should mention that. I found the 2006 Olympics hard to follow. Draper if I remember correctly was the only Red Wing on team Canada, compared to Yzerman and Shanahan in 1998 and 2002. Other than the fact I'm Canadian, in 2006 I really didn't have a reason to cheer or follow team Canada. There was to many players on team Canada in 2006 that I really didn't like because they were on teams that were Red Wings rivals.

I also didn't like cheering against Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Kronwall, Holmstrom, Sammy, Lang, etc.. As soon as the 2006 games started, I honestly couldn't wait until it was over and we were able to get back to Red Wings hockey.

It will probably be the same in 2010. I really don't like Crosby, Thornton, Getzlaf, and Price. Brodeur is ok and so is Green, but I'll find it hard to cheer against our guys. I'll be a wuss and probably stay neutral.

I guess you can say when it comes to Hockey I'm Detroit Red Wings all the way.

When the Olympics were originally held in Ancient Greece they would actually temporarily suspend wars so that the games could be held without interruption.

I'm willing to bite my tongue for three weeks, if only for being in the Olympic spirit.

Being american, I will cheer USA, Sweden (Wings connection) & Russia (Wings connection). Sorry, I don't cheer for Canada in the Olympics, even if I live here. I do hope Russia wins next year though.

It's actually more entertaining for me when Canada doesn't win, it makes for great tv and sports talk radio.

Being a part of this organization for so long, Yzerman definitely knows what wins championships in today's NHL. With that said, tremendous defense has been a characteristic of almost every champion for over a decade. I think you'll definitely see players like Thornton, Richards, Getzlaf, and Savard - all of whom are very good defensively. Also, even though Crosby isn't a great two-way player by any means, I have a hard time believing he won't be there. Marleau is another guy who is great at both ends of the ice, and may earn a spot.

I'll probably be rooting for Russia and Sweden. I don't feel any obligation to root for team USA. However, I'd love to see some of our 'Wings (Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, etc.) get a gold medal. And man, I love the Russian style of play; the potential lines are insane when you have guys like Kovalchuk, Malkin, Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Kovalev, Semin, etc. I think for a well-rounded line-up, they'd be wise to pair one of their natural playmakers (Datsyuk and Malkin) with one of their natural goal scorers (Kovalchuk and Ovechkin).

"Sunday, I was in Pittsburgh and I got the chance to watch Sidney Crosby play against Zetterberg and Datsyuk all night," Yzerman said. "Playing against top players - it's the best way I can measure some of their players' abilities - some of the things they can do and their strengths."

I sincerely doubt that Sidney won't be on the national team but that day (0 points, 1 bad penalty, only one shot and -1) probably didn't work so well in his favor.

Funny, I say the exact same thing about the US team in basketball and generally all it produces is hypocritical rage.

I just read something that I had no clue...and maybe someone could enlighten me. Jiri Hudler is from the Czech Republic...and Devin Setoguchi, which is his half-brother may play for Canada?

Team Canada will be the team to beat per usual. Defending champs Team Sweden still has the advantage of the Wings-connection, though. ;)

I haven't given it a very good look at all, but my sense is that Team USA's roster is going to be pretty dismal by comparison. Though if coach doesn't cut me this year, I'm guaranteeing gold!

I'm afraid I'm going to need a reliable source on that info, and by reliable I dont mean Wikipedia.

I wonder if this involvement in the vancouver 2010 by ken holland and steve yzerman will make them loose focus on the red wings, and what if babcock is presented as headcoach in june, he will have his head full of the canadian team, how is he gonna be able to have 100% focus on the wings next october when the season starts?

Doing it like the Wings? I think it'll be pretty hard to get a bunch of Europeans on the team.

Maybe he should say: "I'm trying to make the team play like me" but that wouldn't fit the class of the guy :P
