Conklin neck & neck w/ best goalie in the world

Stats are stats... interpret them as you may. Not making a big deal about it, just an interesting observation at this point in the season.

Living in Vancouver's back yard, I always hear about Luongo as the best goalie in the world. Well, for what its worth, Ty Conklin's stats are neck and neck with Luongo's. Even has one more shut out having played two less games.

While thats great and all, and I do think Conklin has given us some solid performance for most of the year, he hasn't played as well as his stats indicate. Thats not to say he hasnt played well - just that we all know the performance coming from Luongo are bigger game-savers than those coming from Conklin.

I don't think Conklin gets the credit he deserves for being nothing more than a solid goaltender ALL season long. Everyone likes to dismiss him as a career 'back-up goaltender'. Try asking Conklin how he feels about about being a career back-up. Goaltending is very much about desire and I have no reason to doubt he has it. Conklin has a lot to prove and I happen to think he's ready to prove. I'm on board.

Im a big fan of Conklin, even when he was with the penguins and backed up fleury while he was hurt last year giving them some much needed wins to reach the playoffs (I think he went 18-8 with them.) The little time he has played in the NHL as a backup has been very productive as you can tell by the stats. I see him as the future of the team seeing how Howard hasn't really developed in my eyes yet and Daniel Larsson still has a couple years to go. Goaltending is a huge part of the game if not the most important in this age of the NHL. I think Conks has proven himself when presented with the challenges hes faced. BUT, this is Osgood country...the verteran stays in for the playoffs!

Best goaltenderS in the world (let's leave it to defined eras, read: late 90s, to dole out the BEST single title): Kiprusoff, Luongo, Thomas

NOT one of the best goaltenderS: Conklin

Interpret this how you will.

There's still a few games to go until the playoffs, but do you remember the starting goalie named Hasek who was replaced in the playoffs by a backup named Osgood?

Will history repeat itself this year?

Only time will tell!

You cannot make this comparison, it is not fair at all. The only reason they have similar games played is because Luongo was injured for almost half the season. Luongo's games played are night in night out. Conklin gets the benefit of being able to rest and prepare for each and every games he plays. Not all goalies are cut out to start basically every game.

I have thought about that but I think this year is a little bit different. Both goalies last year were proven goaltenders with experience in the playoffs. This year deals with the goalies overall skill and ability to face a playoff ready team night after night I think. Osgood has the experience and ability over Conklin in my mind cause he is a veteran playoff goalie and well lets face it...Conklin has only played 1 single playoff game with the Oilers. It all comes down to if Osgood can get his mind ready for the playoffs. Osgood is our guy...hes been with us through the thick and thin. BUT if for whatever reason Osgood takes a mental health day like Hasek did last year I can't see both of these goalies failing us through this playoff run. Im all for Conklin and im all for Osgood but the man with the experience must play! GO WINGS!

Luongo to his standards this year, has been brutal. The Canucks, most nigths keep him in games. Except for the past couple, where he's really come on, so watch out for Vancouver. I mean it's great that Conks is playing well, and has very good goaltending statistics, but he's still got along ways to go.

lolcomparison.

Luongo means 19,000 times more to his team than Conklin does to ours.

This is true.

Luongo is the star of his team. The team relies far more on him to be a gamebreaker than the Wings rely on Conklin. With Luongo, the Canucks win many more of their games than without (in fact they lose more games than win, when Luongo isn't in net). With Osgood and Conklin, the Wings win just about the same, ending up with essentially the same amount of points. The only real difference seems to be confidence which gives Conklin the edge as Osgood has let in some pretty terrible goals on a consistent basis.

I was going to say 18,750 times more...but I get your point.

I agree that the comparison is not fair, but for the opposite reason. Any goalie would rather play night in and night out rather than playing a game then sitting for a couple of weeks and then finally playing another game.

Advantage: Luongo.
