Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Toskala is officially done for the season, there's the reasoning behind the Gerber pickup. Although acquiring Legace would make more sense IMO.
Casey 145 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 1997 doesn't "count." He was the backup. His name is on the Stanley Cup three times, not two. I rest my case.
spydrwebb 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 As far as contenders go...absolutely. That being said, I love Ottawa's deal this morning as well. Leclaire's going to be a great pickup for them for atleast the next couple seasons after this one and the 2nd rounder is icing on the cake. QFT

What difference does it make? Gerber was the one on waivers so they took him.

Nightfall 871 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 The difference between winner and starter, for goalies, is a big one. If you don't understand that you are foolish. When people speak of Martin Gerber, do they say he won a Cup? No. Cam Ward stood on his head in the playoffs. Gerber was just there. What about Brodeur's backups? Exactly. That's my main point. My main point is that it should and does count especially if the goalie has made a significant contribution in the regular season and playoffs. Gerber won a cup with Carolina and deservedly so. Like it or not, the record books support it.

Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Howard and a third for neil would be an awesome trade. Do we have the cap room though?
Doggy 130 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I hope we are looking at Dominic Moore. $600k salary and 41 points. Good defensive guy as well. He wouldn't produce very well with us. He's a top-liner in TO. He won't get a shot like he's has with the Leafs with us nor probably anyone.

Frozen-Man 144 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 In my eyes, the experience is merely a bonus. What most intrigues me about Laperriere is actually this combination of PKing/energy/physicality. Hes like Drake, except in his prime. I wouldn't be advocating so much for Lappy if he was merely a gritty vet - but hes been putting on a show on the PK this year. Hes kind of a package of exactly what we need - even more so than Neil, and I personally like Neil better. Oh Yeah, don't get me wrong I wasn't disagreeing with you I would love to get Laperriere on the team - more it was just a musing in general about having a pretty big turnover in the next several year (with our older vets) and having quite a few GR kids without out much experience. It really wasn't an I hope we don't get Lappy post more a hope we can get more experience for a few of the younger guys as well somehow (actually I was thinking more about some older guys sharing more time in the playoffs with some of the kids). Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 And Ottawa now has LeClaire, Elliot & Auld. They won't be after yet another goaltender. Exactly. Where is his place? The Wings are pretty deep in net, and Howard hasn't exactly been amazing. How so? There are questions about Ozzie's play, who's under contract thru 2011 . Conklin is a UFA after this year. Without Howard, that leaves a completely untested Larsson. That doesn't sound like a lot of depth to me. Howard is what, 25? I'm not saying a buy that deal either - a 3rd and Howard is a lot for Neil - but Howard hasn't exactly done himself many favors since being integrated into the Wings organization, and hes getting to the point where its now or never. I agree Howard's running out of time and has been inconsistent and a bit disappointing. But like you said, the deal sounds all wrong for someone the Wings still have hopes for. egroen 384 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 I am just fine with the Wings doing nothing - the only thing I would really be excited about is some crazy trade for Bouwmeester.
boomer 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Still for some reason i am not at all worried about the Flamers? They have definitely improved but for some reason I don't think they have it in them to go the distance. I felt that way earlier in the year but they have picked up their game. Jokkinen respects Keenan and Leopold knows their system, and Bertuzzi has found a home there. It would be dangerous to underestimate them in a series their a physical team. Could we play a physical series with them night in and night out at this point ?

Nightfall 871 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 His name is on the Stanley Cup three times, not two. I rest my case. There are times I am glad that the NHL has set rules for players getting their names on the cup. Players who worked hard to come back like McCarty and maybe only played 1 game in the finals should get credit. Maybe someone played all through the regular season and then got injured for the playoffs. That person should also be considered a cup winning player. As for goalies, even Brodeur's backup played all season, practiced hard, maybe played 15 games, and so on. He worked his ass off as much as Brodeur did and deserves his name on the cup and gets it. I think this would be a good topic of conversation for the main forum here. Seems that some people are anal about who should be put on the cup and who shouldn't. Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Taken from Puck Daddy. The San Jose Sharks are the "frontrunner?" For Jay Bouwmeester? Seriously? He means the Cup, right? Because otherwise .... J-Bouw, Blake and Boyle. Whoa. Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland on TSN said it appears his team won't be making a move but "who knows?"

Nightfall 871 Report post Posted March 4, 2009 Am I the only one that thinks Neil isn't that good of a depth pickup for the Wings? If they can get him for nothing, and I mean nothing, its fine. With Leino and Helm though, they have plenty of depth past the starters.
