anthonyn66 89 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) I watched Tradecentre today, and after the trade deadline, the Red Wings are still the favourites, as 3/4 of the reporters put them as the Stanley Cup Champs. With Osgood getting back to form, Downey showing that they have toughness, and great prospects, it's hard to disagree. Second was usually San Jose, and then it was a mixed order of Boston, New Jersey, Washington/Philadelphia. One reporter put them 4th, because of bad goaltending and very loose defense. Osgood's coming back to form and hopefully he continues to build, making us completely ready for playoffs as favourites. edit: take that Clement, people who watch hockey Edited March 5, 2009 by anthonyn66

PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) Who has the best chance of unseating the Red Wings as Stanley Cup Champions? Bob McKenzie: I’m going to say the New Jersey Devils. I liked them from the beginning of the year, and I like them even better now that Zach Parise is having an MVP-caliber season.... Darren Dreger: The Calgary Flames. They will beat the Red Wings in the Western Conference, so Detroit won’t make it to the final. Pierre McGuire: I think it’s the Devils for what Bob said, and for the fact they probably have the best coach in the NHL right now. source Darren Dreger is a idiot. The Flames will self implode by the 2nd round. Edited March 5, 2009 by PROBIE4PREZ

The Secret 304 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 I do not like the Red Wings being given the favourites tag, maybe I am just superstitious?! I think these days that any team that makes the play offs has as good a chance as any to win. Our club will have definite advantages in our favour but seems the most dangerous teams are the one's that fight for the final play off spots at the end of the year because they enter the play offs already in survival mode their killer instinct is already primed. To our advantage is the mid to late season adversities that we have to get through because it seems to get us into that same survival/killer instinct mode come play off time. I'm not as concerned about that anymore. They were the favorites the last 2 years they've won the Cup and there's just too much veteran leadership mixed with total Stanley Cups won amongst the current cast of Wings for that to worry me anymore. TBH, I'm sure the Red Wings' players buy into that even less than the fans do.
LeftWinger 5,148 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 the only thing I have to say is, whatever! These guys are getting paid for their opinions and alot of times they are more wrong than the weatherman! I could pick at least 10 folks from this forum that I would rather listen to than any of the schmoes that are the "experts" now! And that even includes some of our opposing team fans that come here! I cannot believe these guys get paid to do what we do (better)everyday! It's insane! Wasn't our goaltending a question last year? How many years do we have to hear it? First they say ANY goalie can be great behind our team, then thy turn around and say we won't win because of our goaltending! "Hasek is old, Osgood is a back-up!" Well, need we remind you who raised the Cup last year? I think deep down inside they all know who has the best chance but haveto pick someone else just so they all don't sound like... well, like they're fans from Detroit forum! Hey if we don't win this year, we'll be back next year, and the year after that, and so on.... Not like Tampa, Carolina, Anaheim, Colorado, need I go on? RedLightGoesOn 81 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 Calgary made some great moves. They have a great lineup and looked to at depth, they added the winningest player who hasn't been to the playoffs. Dont forget its till Igoonla and company up to their usual tricks. I think this might go down as a failure to gain depth and go somewhere in the playoffs. The Sharks made some moves but they have confidence issues. They can beat teams that are worse than them, but beating teams that are as good as them or better seems to be the issue. They made some moves, but we all know, and so do they, that rosters and stats that are good in the regular season don't mean squat in the playoffs. I think Calgary going down in the second round is a good call... maybe even for the Sharks too. I know it is hard to repeat but we have only added to the same depth we had last year. That is what will put us in the chase for a repeat, even if Osgood plays decent.
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 (edited) If the D continues to play like they have the last few games and all the players are healthy things will be good. San Jose and Calgary are 2 teams we need to watch out for though. Edited March 5, 2009 by Rivalred

TBH, I'm sure the Red Wings' players buy into that even less than the fans do. They weren't the favourite last year. San Jose was, because of the moves they made. I still remember though, James Duthie saying they would win the cup, and the other team would be the Rangers. Good job Duthie, you were right and they were wrong! (besides the rangers part) Calgary made some great moves. They have a great lineup and looked to at depth, they added the winningest player who hasn't been to the playoffs. Good moves do a lot, but they don't guarantee anything. San Jose picked up Campbell, but still had the playoff exit they had the year before. Unless there is a rash of injuries Downey will not be on the playoff roster. And Osgood needs more than two solid games to prove hes rounding into form. They had the President's trophy under their belt and home ice advantage to go with it. The Vegas odds-makers had the Wings as the favorite to win it all...not SJ. Just because a couple sportscasters said the Sharks were the favorites, doesn't mean they actually were.
Inultus 12 Report post Posted March 5, 2009 Hopefully. They got Jokinen now who might be the extra key player they needed. They also got Leopold who could turn out to be there best D-man. I'm watching out for Calgary, but I also rely on the fact that Kippy always sucks it up when it counts. Hopefully Ozzy won't do the same.
