bellarina 1 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 Then this team is a bunch of malingerers who shouldn't be playing pro sports, and shouldn't be getting paid money to waste our time watching them. The fans at the JLA should all have full refunds for the entire season if it did happen. It's still a bizzarre idea, because this isn't boxing where athletes have been known to tank on purpose. I don't see a sports team doing something like this. Not if they have any self-respect. Your statement doesn't hold water. If they were losing all their games sure but this is still a team that is competeing for first place so the fans can't really complain.

Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 Awesome, How's that working out for you? I was just trying to let you know I wasn't trying to attack you personally. How is not being a guy working out for me? Well, for the last 26 years it's been working out just fine, thanks for inquiring.

seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 This is what I tell myself to keep sane. And no matter how many games they blow in the regular season, come June, if Bettman hands that Cup to Nick, no one's gonna remember these meaningless games.
Ms_Hockey 0 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 This thread reminds me of the whole "Scotty Bowman strategy". I have heard many times that people believe Scotty would purposely switch up the lines and lose games to avoid playing certain teams in the first round of the playoffs. There was never any proof of it - but their guess is as good as mine.
I Red Wings I 40 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 Strange, strange topic. To answer the question, who wouldn't be upset? I don't understand any reasoning behind it, teams aren't going to let up on a team who just won a Cup. It makes absolutely no sense. I think this guy truly believes that this is happening and didn't want to admit 100%, wanting every opinion he could get.
GMRwings1983 8,803 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 So even if we won the cup this year, that wouldn't matter? I mean that's fine because it's an opinion. I just want to make sure that no matter what the outcome, if they weren't playing 100% on purpose, you'd be pissed. No, even then it wouldn't matter. It would just be degrading to the game and to the fans if such an attitude existed on any team.
mjlegend 155 Report post Posted March 13, 2009 I don't think this could happen and i'd be extremely disappointed if they did. I'd be much more inclined to believe it if the Wings were in 7th or 8th. Thinking about this, the Wings ARE sort of saving players like Helm, Leino, Abdelkader for the playoffs, so they do have cards that aren't on the table they aren't tipping. But are the players on the ice conserving effort? I really don't think so. How is not being a guy working out for me? Well, for the last 26 years it's been working out just fine, thanks for inquiring. Sir, please lower your voice.
puckbags 863 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 To me the only thing that matters is the Cup so if they are which I doubt but if they are playing this way to play better in the playoffs I'd take it to enjoy another Stanley Cup Championship!! Exactly..I could care less really if we win the Presidents trophy or the Western conference. I want this team to be foucused for a month and half come playoff time and if we are it's going to be hard for anyone to beat us !!
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 (edited) We could go 0-82, as long as we win the cup I don't give a s*** about the regular season. Why on earth would you. The playoffs are what the Wings play for and it's the only thing that matters. Did anyone go into July thinking "YES WE GOT THE PRESIDENTS CUP PARTY HARD". I heard fireworks when we won the cup, not clinched the president's trophy. I care about the president's trophy, but only because we get home ice. If the Red Wings got home ice regardless of their place in the standings, I could care less about whether we get first, second, or eigth place. Frankly it's a legit strategy. There is no need for us to go all out in the regular season, we're making the playoffs unless we completely tank which won't happen and we kick it up when it matters. We've seen it before. Think the Sharks games or the Chicago games. Now if they're purposely losing games so they can get a particular first round matchup, that's lame. DMAC 25 18 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 as long as they win the cup i dont care what they do during the season. dont get me wrong i'd be pissed if they did play like crap and finished 8th but in the end if they won the cup the season was overall a good season

digitaljohn88 4 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 No, I dont think this would ever happen. Pro athletes love to win, but they also want to make money. What determines how big their contracts are? Regular season play / statistics / etc. This is why players on bad teams (for the most part) just don't mail it in. Same reason players on the Red Wings aren't going to mail it in. It could affect their next contract.

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 If the Wings are losing on purpose consistently, then I'm dating Anne Hathaway. Since I am not dating Anne Hathaway and will never date her, the Wings are not losing on purpose.
HadThomasVokounOnFortSt 878 Report post Posted March 14, 2009 That would be something, trying to throw the games but why would the Wings do that? Wouldn't the Wings want to win another cup in a row?
