The bar doesn't "save" anything. A crossbar/post hit is, in fact, a miss (unless it hits just right as to angle it down into the goal). That's why it doesn't count as a shot on goal. It's treated as if it weren't there and the puck had passed through air.. it's not in the legal scoring area.. thus, not a save

TL;DR: Kovalchuk missed.

I almost completely agree, but, at the crossbar...the net is at the top portion of the bar so technically it would go in if it was not there
