sjradio 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 This is from tonight's game There is a delayed penalty coming to Phoenix, Luongo gets pulled for the 6th attacker. The puck hits off of Tikanov and then O'Brien puts it into his own net. Victor Tikanov got credit for the goal and he got the penalty afterwards.
Mike 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 I was watching this when it happened and could not believe what I had just saw. When was the last time this happened? Later on in the game, CBC showed Gretzky's reaction to the goal and all he said was "wow".
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 Lol, I was just checking the boxscore from that game and noticed that Phoenix had been credited an empty netter in the 2nd period, then came here to see if anyone knew what was up. Guess I chose the right place to investigate.

That was the game before Franzen turned him inside out for that goal.
Mike 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) Ryan O'Byrne put it into his own empty net earlier this year, Montreal vs. NYI. That was the game before Franzen turned him inside out for that goal. O'Byrne's own goal was a little more costly as it tied the game. The NYI would go on to win that game too. Edited March 22, 2009 by Mike

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 Feel bad for the player. Tried to stop the pass and hit the wrong part of his stick, sending it straight for his own goal. Valiant effort to stop it, though. Almost did.

Krayzie_Bone 58 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 That was funny. I was playing ps3 and just happened to flip over to nhl network right as the canuck was diving for the puck and it went over. Great stuff.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 Detroit scored a goal like this years ago, seems like it was against Anaheim I remember there was one game where the Wings were versing Anaheim, and it was very early in the season. It might have been the preseason, actually, I can't remember. But it was either the goalie was pulled for a 6th man on the PP, or the Mighty Ducks were down by a goal late in the third and pulled for an extra attacker, but I remember that Karyia had the puck deep in our zone in the corner, and they had already established our zone, and he passed it blindly back to the point, but the defender pinched into the slot for a one-timer, and sure enough the puck drifted into an empty net. Maybe that's what you are remembering?

Pavrik Zettersyuk 4 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 (edited) the Coyote shot the puck, and shooting the puck is as good of control over the puck as you're gonna get. It shoulda been 'no goal.' Edited March 22, 2009 by Pavrik Zettersyuk
tweekvp 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2009 the Coyote shot the puck, and shooting the puck is as good of control over the puck as you're gonna get. It shoulda been 'no goal.' I thought that at first also. Look at it again, he hits the stick of the Canuck player which sends the puck back.

Maybe that's what you are remembering? It was actually Adam Oates that scored on his own net in Anaheim's home opener in the 02-03 season (october 13th 2002). Shanahan ended up getting the credit for the goal and got the penalty. So, this most recent incident is not that big of deal. It happens. The best part is that was the game winning goal that night. Apparently Oates was attempting a pass to Vitaly Vishnevski when Vishnevski at the same time had turned to go to the bench to have a more offensive minded player take his spot. OOPS! in the video they think that Chelios touches it but credit ends up going to Shanahan. ESPN link to story Edited March 22, 2009 by elriqo28

Looked like the PHX player just whacked it, but its on the VAN stick, I guess hitting the stick is al you need on a penalty!

Blazer 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2009 Haha, always funny when these things happen (as long as its not the Wings doing it ofc). But I was thinking of a more hilarious own goal, I think it was in 02/03, where its a defensive draw to the left of the goalie, and the defending player wins the draw too cleanly and scores on his own goalie. Anyone remember that one, and what teams were playing?
