The reason I started this thread was not to have "Chris Osgood: reliable starter or just a lucky goalie" -discussion No. 5298.

We all know he's having a horrendous season. Let's not even argue about that.

And if we (SUPRISE SUPRISE) are going to continue this never-ending, mindnumbing story about his blue-line goals ihe let past him in the 98 playoffs, why don't we talk about Ty Conklin's playoffs record:

1 game played, 1 game lost, 10.00 GAA, .667 SV%

I'll take this guy:

In 1997 Ozzie was the No.1 goalie. Mike Vernon started the playoffs and did admirably.

In 1998, ***** all you want now... Chris Osgood won the Stanley Cup.

In 1999 Osgood played great untill he went out with a knee in jury. He didn't return until the 5th game against the Avs.

In 2000 the Wings failed collectively and miserably in round 2 against the Avs.

In 2001 Osgood, Draper and Lidstrom were the only ones to show up in games 4,5 and 6 against the LA. Ozzie got waived.

In 2002 Ozzie helped the Islanders to get into the playoffs for the 1st time in 8 years, losing a hard fought battle to Toronto in the first round in 7 games.

In 2003 after been traded to the Blues he played all 7 games in yet another 7 game first round against the Canucks.

In 2004 after a great regular season, the Blues were no match for the San Jose Sharks.

In 2006 Ozzie didn't play in the playoffs, Manny Legace did and the Wings lost in the 1st round to the Oilers.

In 2007 Ozzie didn't play in the playoffs, Dom Hasek did and the Wings lost Western Conference finals to the Ducks.

In 2008 he helped win us another Stanley Cup with a record of 14-4 with a 1.55 GAA .

All in all, 106 playoff games, 59 won with a 2.11 GAA.

and there was key players injuried for the Islanders in Game 5 in Toronto that they could not bounce back from. Horrible game to be in attendance for but it was fun to be at the ACC for a playoff game.

Why not take him seriously? Ozzie has played bad for like, eleventy billion years. This season the defense has played perfectly in front of him and Conklin, which explains the #1 PK in the league, and I dare you to find any highlight reel goals of opposing offenses undressing this impenetrable fortress of a defense. You can't can you? Can you?! I didn't think so. This is all Osbad's fault. I bet all those fans not showing up at the JLA are just protesting Osgood. He should just hang up his skates since he can't ever win a cup.

Two things. His cup wins mean nothing. You might remember a similar situation last season where one of the best goalies of all time got replaced in the playoffs.

Secondly, if it's just the team that's playing badly, how can you account for Conklin's enormously better stats?

The whole team and especially the D trust conklin more, its so obvious, osgood looked awkwardly shaky last night in every damn situation, hilarious, right now anything is better than osgood, literally, so having conklin in net won't damage the team more.

Actually, Saying that putting conks in won't change how the team plays might be a little off. Conks has been very consistent this year save from a couple mishaps and bad games but when He is in net, I see more confidence in the D and they push forward harder and it results in more scoring chances. I see the offense able to take risks on the forecheck and be able to go deep in the offensive zone w/o having to worry AS much about backchecking (because they have more of that confidence) which results in our offense turning on the heat even higher.

Osgood is NOT a top goalie in the league, and he has never been nor will he ever be, he's one of them players whose career looks impressive but in fact it's the teammates they play with, osgood has been fortunate to have a solid D for so many years, facing what 22-25shots per night, any goalie can do that, get wins and look impressive, that's osgood in a nutshell. Nothing more nothing less

Word of the day: "Career back-up goaltender"

Just my 2.

Last year he made the saves he suppose to do in the playoffs, yay all good, but it was the team, mostly the D that won it.. he wasn't spectacular just good, and that's about it (same with 98' cup)... successful career? not really, i'd say the guy has been very lucky.

So you would rather play a goalie with past success but current failure than a goalie with current success and past failure, based off of one game? Oh, and that one game of failure (three years ago, by the way); Conklin came in to replace an injured Roloson, who had already let in 4 goals. Conklin only faced three shots, and the one goal that went in was because of a bad clearing attempt on his part. The 10 GAA and .667 save percentage is a bit skewed when you only play the last part of an already ugly game.

Of course the stats are skewed.

But I just wanted to point out that Ty has just one game of playoff hockey on his résumé.

And yes, I would rather play a goalie with past succes, because A) I think his play has improved significantly and B) the playoffs have nothing to do with the regular season.

Besides that, we all know that the playoffs are not only about playing the game, but also about being mentally fresh. Conklin has no experience in either of those aspects.

problem is without Hossa AND Franzen we lose a huge chunck of our Goals For... sure we could possibly cut down our Goal Against... but what we gain in the Goals Against category will be lost even more in the Goals For sticking us in the same "if not worse" scenario.

I get what the intial post is saying but the fact of the matter is that we DRW fans are hard on goalies and probably will always be.

And Osgood deserves a good portion of the critisizm he's gotten even on here as he's not shown a consistent reason not to speak less than highly of him this season.

The thing I can't agree with is folks on here saying he never was talented and/or currently has no talent- he does and has and if you can't see that then something's off on your end. I'm not getting into it about this so save it.

What do I think the people who get paid a lot of money because they know a lot more about hockey than most of us on here should do about it is the same thing they did last year, start the experienced goalie and let him blow it. Hasek lost two games and was gone, and it all worked out fine.

And the reason why it WOULD WORK AGAIN THIS YEAR is Ty Conklin. A second goalie (backup, #1B, whatever) is an insurance policy and Conklin's a good one. Yes, better than Manny Legacy.

It's been a problem this year and if Hossa wasn't signed, perhaps Holland would had the means to aquire a goalie at trade deadline.

And Wings should let Hossa and Hudler walk, resign Franzen and restructure the goalie situation for next season.

Oh lord what did you say "goaltending on the cheap in Detroit" courtesy of Ken Holland.

Maybe part of the reason why the Wings have had such success over the course of the past decade and a half is their avoidance of knee-jerk reactions such as that which you've just suggested.

Nah......couldn't be.....

Exactly. Like last year when the Wings stuck with Hasek while he was having trouble instead of replacing him with OSgood during the playoffs.

Well it IS true.. who was the last goalie in the D over $4m/yr? Wasn't it Cujo?

I don't know maybe it was Cujo. Bottom line coaching and management are to blame for our goaltending predicament. If we were second stringers like Osgood and Conklin and late in their careers who could blame them for finding a home here. Everywhere else they be back- ups period.

you are calling being down 2 games to zilch with pretty questionable goals getting let in 8seconds apart in BOTH games a knee jerk reaction? that was more like a necessity. We didn't waive him or kick him off the team... If Ozzie would have faultered then perhaps they would have went back to him to try to finish it up.

LOL Are you for real? Are you so completely in love with osgood whether he plays good, bad or horrible that it has skewed your memory so horribly to make him fulfill your username? Let's not forget that Dom did win the first two games and was not pulled until game 4.

lol my bad... i forgot about the two initial wins.... but didn't the first two games have the 8sec apart goals? either way.. dom was yanked and it wasn't a knee jerk reaction (which was the moral of my post) it was after consideration seeing his play go down hill when it mattered most...

as for the hasek situation last year... it worked out fine because we had a reliable person on the bench... MUCH like this season if something should happen in the first round or later.

You have to remember we don't have Mr. Legace as a fall back guy (even though he did rock as a backup here)

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way. Conklin has to be one of the most solid backups the wings have had as of late.

So that's why he actually put up better numbers on the Islanders when going from a 1st place team to a last place team, eh? It all makes sense now...

How can you account for Osgood having the same amount of points as Conklin when they were even in games? And since when is the regular season the playoffs? And I'd love to see you fault Osgood for opposing teams getting behind this defense, or this team's horrid PK. Osgood hasn't cost this team points, and ironically in the Islanders loss he was getting blamed even when the Wings couldn't score a single goal. Osgood bashers have no logic behind their bashing, just fruitless nonsensical blathering s***. All that matters in the regular season is winning games in the regular season. All that matters in the playoffs is winning games in the playoffs. People need to stuff their GAA and save % up their ass and quit whining about it when this team is at the same level, points-wise, as last season. If they f*** up in the playoffs, they get the criticism they deserve, especially individuals who cause them to choke in the playoffs, if it isn't a team effort like it's been the entire season.

Were you around last season? EVERYTHING people are saying about osgood they said about Hasek last season, that it was the team's fault and not hasek's. I'm just drawing parallels between last year and this year. Believe it or not, Hasek was right behind Osgood in GAA last year. He was tied for #3 in GAA, ozzie was #1. So the #3 goalie in GAA got pulled last year in the playoffs, what do you say about the goalie ranked #40?

Osgood's wins come from the offense scoring to cover his GA. Yes, wins are wins, but we won't be able to win games 6-5 and 5-4 like we have so often this season. That's the whole point. The regular season isn't the playoffs. The amount of points we have now verses what we had last year means nothing. It's how you get the points. By your logic the 95-96 red wings should have gone 16-0 in the playoffs because they had so many wins. What don't you understand?
