Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 7, 2009 Wasn't much of a fight but he at least might have connected with a punch, which is far more than I can say for Crosby's fight.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I'm glad that he's been broken into an nhl fight at least. Maybe we'll see some more formal fights from him now. The kid is a beast.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 Not much of a fight but that one punch he threw looked like he has a lot of power behind it. And yes, I like what I'm seeing from the Wings. They're hitting, they're winning the small battles, Ozzie came up huge tonight, they're battling hard for everything they get. T otally different team tonight than we've seen all season. Stafford, Rivet, Roy, McCarthur....Filppula, Sammy, Ericsson, Lidstrom... Yep. Point being, over half those players were wearing visors. But they chose to make a note of Samuelson. As in, Sammy's a coward (euro) and Stafford? A good Canadian kid? I'm probably reading too much into this.

Seemes like some bias, anti-euro color commentary. Thoughts? edit: spelling Nice hit by Filppula. Almost like Datsyuk. This might sound stupid but if you look at it again, Sammy's helmet was up and his visor was above his head. He went after that guy with his face presented. I'm not going after Sammy here at all, by the way. I'm pointing out that their seemed to be some anti-euro bias coming from one particular play-by-play guy. Why else would they make a comment about him wearing a "shield"? And just him?

danijel 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 i am sick of seeing this kind of garbage. a nice clean hit results in a big scrum. why? why can't people get hit anymore? the instigator rule needs to be enforced more stringently by the refs if this is to stop. For sure, I'm just adding more to the fire. I mean, he went at him with his face presented and the visor out of the way, which makes Edzo look even dumber for singling Sammy out. For all intents and purposes, that 'shield' wasn't on. In general, it's just a shame that color commentary and analysis is for the leftovers who just aren't good enough to coach and through color analysis they are able to displace their frustrations on the teams that wouldn't offer them job opportunities in the first place. scotzman 29 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 How didn't Rivet get a 3rd man in penalty? Exactly my thought... total BS. I thought he held his own very well... the d-bag with the visor on should have received an instigator penalty too. The refs blew hard in this game. They must have been told by the Rat to give the small market team a chance to get into the playoffs. Either way, nice to see the "Euros" taking care of business. skacore 2 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 Exactly my thought... total BS. pretend you aren't a Wings fan for a sec and reevaluate the situation... a guy who is like 6'5 220 falls ontop of a guy like 6'0 190 and is still throwing punches, Rivet simply went over to make sure Ericsson stopped, it wasn't anything serious... you don't toss a guy for that if that was Gaustad on top of Filppula and Franzen put a hand on Gaustad's shoulder and told him "chill out", I think everyone would be OK that no 3rd man in misconduct was assessed. Take a look around Edzo--over half the league wears visors now, it's not just a "pansy Euro" thing anymore.

You are right... thanks for talking me off the ledge. I will say that if you really wanted to enforce the rule as written, Rivet could have been tossed or at least given a penalty to even things up... my anger was more about the overall officiating tonight. There were a lot of bad calls/non-calls. That is my interpretation and opinion though. 47.16 Third Man In - A game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who is the first to intervene (third man in) in an altercation already in progress except when a match penalty is being imposed in the original altercation. This penalty is in addition to any other penalties incurred in the same incident. This rule also applies to subsequent players or goalkeepers who elect to intervene in the same or other altercations during the same stoppage of play. A good Canadian kid? I'm probably reading too much into this. i don't think so. overall, i thought the commentary was alright tonight, and i thought the officiating wasn't bad, other than the blatant double major that should have been called on the high stick against franzen. but, yeah, i caught that too...i know edzo will talk about how amazing a detroit player is when he does something amazing...if datsyuk makes somebody look foolish, edzo will talk about it and give props. i do think, though, that when it's a 50-50 situation, he'll give the edge to the non-wing and/or non-euro, which in this case, and in many cases with us, are the same thing. when a good or bad play is beyond question, most of the time the vs. guys will call it right...but i think there's a degree of bias. they pointed out that the high stick should have been a penalty, but i remember in game 6 against pitts last year, lilja laid a hit that probably SHOULD have been called interference, but was still somewhat marginal, and pierre was all "I DON'T CARE WHO WINS OR LOSES THIS GAME THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PENALTY OMGWTFBBQ," whereas franzen gets high sticked, clearly, with blood, and they're kinda like, "ho-hum, should have been a call." *shrug* but f*** 'em. edzo doesn't win cups; the wings do.
