Why the Red Wings Don't Fight

Umm, I'm having a hard time following you, so I'll just repeat my oppinion so that you know what it is. People who want a toughguy on the 4th line generally also like winning and pretty plays. I'm not sure what "argument" you think I'm making, and I'm not sure exactly what you think I'm admittiting to.

And did you just call me childish and admit to "going after people" on the internet in the same paragraph? Lol.

But you don't harp on the wings simply because there isn't a gritty fourth liner like Downey. You seem to think this team needs to get tougher on the upper lines, with the likes of getting a more gung-ho captain than Lidstrom, a more harnosed player than Datsyuk, and a tougher winger than Franzen.

That's the problem with your critique of the team. Your avatar is a big representation of that.

Micah is just going to get more and more pissed as this postseason goes on as every Red Wings win further solidifies management's choice of going after skilled players who will thrive under a puck-possession system. :hehe:

Why on earth would I get pissed? I don't like that my favorite team is currently opting to play a style of hockey that isn't exactly the most exciting package they could put together, especially durring the reg. season - but I'm enjoying the playoffs very much so far, thankyouverymuch. I am pulling for the Wings to win the Cup again this year, and every win puts a smile on my face:)

Only to a certain point. I do think that every single player ought to be willing to fight if the time is right, absolutely. Nobody is above getting dirty or bloody for the team. That said, there are very, very few situations in whisch I think a Crosby or Lidstrom or Datsyuk should be fighting.

Lidstrom and Datsyuk I'm mostly okay with, they're skilled enough and quiet enough that they get a bit of a pass - though I would certainly like to see Lidstrom show some emotion once in a while, I don't like hockey-bots. Franzen on the other hand, is deserving of ridicule. He is skilled, but not a superstar. He is big. He is strong. He's active in scrums and can be mouthy....but he is also a huge, huge *****. Guys like him, Maltby, Sammy, etc oughta shut their mouths. I don't like men who talk trash but refuse to back it up in hockey or in real life.

My avatar is, as I'm sure all of you recall, a picture of Franzen turtling (remember how certain other skilled players from other teams get called out on this board for turling?) after he was involved in a scrum, skated awauy, and came back into it, to get one-punched. He either dived or the single punch to the face made him fall down and turtle. He should be ashamed of himself for that - he was returning to a scrum, what did he expect?

When was this? 2007 playoffs?

What is the point of fighting when were out there killing every team on the scoreboard?

Answer: Why not do both? At the end of the day this is sports entertainment, fans want to see Gordie Howe hatricks.

I'd say those of us whom prefer the N.American style of play are content with our current position in the NHL - that is winning on a nightly basis, & being 1 of the top 3 teams in the league year after year...Is it wrong for us to yearn for a little bit of grit/character "good Canadian boys" for the 3rd/4th lines?

I don't think we're asking for all that much - are we?

I don't "prefer" any style of play, beyond a soccer-like game of 0-0 based on the clutch/grab and trap defense the Devils employed years back before necessary rule changes/enforcement took over. The Wings have had their doses of North American brand, and European, I don't get why it matters which the team plays as long as they win.

It's Bettman's job to worry about that, it's a GM's job to make a winning team anyway he can.

Honestly Downey would have probably been in the line up more this year if it wasn't for the salary cap crunch. Kenny wisely didn't risk any players to waivers to bring him up when the team was healthy, and used his injury call ups to take a look at guys like Helm and Leino when the team wasn't. I don't know that you can argue with either of those philosophies. In almost every other season as GM he has had a legit scrapper in the line up on a nightly basis so it's not as if he's completely opposed to the concept.

All I hear every game is how great the Wings org is from owner down to the stacked-with-talent lineups year after year. If that's so true and they've built this model franchise and style of play, why don't they have more Cups to show for it?

Because teams found a way to beat them. And that way, more often than not, was not to TTLY BEAT DOWN THOSE *******!1 In '95, for example, the Devils played a ruthless lockdown game. In '03, the Wings forgot how to play down low. Hell, the Wings were a breath away from sending that Big, Bad Ducks team packing in '07.

Look, we all like the rough side of the game. And here's Kenny himself straight-up saying that he'd ideally like to give Babs a team that can play and pound. But the Wings have a good thing going. They're the class of the league for a reason. I'm content with that.

I want to see good ice hockey in first place above any other crap ..

I love the way the Wings have fixed their Team.

I do understand that a two or three have to be in the line up to stand up for HEAVY DEFENDING of our top players!

Claude Giroux: Get's into a fight (yes a PLAYOFF fight OMG!), scores a goal to lift his team when the score is tied, and completely sets up and assists on the second short handed goal to put Philly up by 2. They went on to win. He won his fight btw. But hey, THERE'S NO FIGHTING IN THE PLAYOFFS! IT'S WORTHLESS!

Well, yeeeahhh! Look how it helped the Blues tonight! Fans were cheering every time a scrum started. They loved it. Go, fans! Go, team!

Of course the other part of their problem was they couldn't score on two 5 on 3's, plus remembering to screen Luongo or get him moving side to side. Other than that, their plan was a winner!

...urp...

You cant argue that the playoffs have been even more entertaining with all the bad blood, I hope Stuart or Kronwall blows someone up in Game 3 and someone on the Wings steps up and beats them down. Leave Columbus with nothing to do, no intimidation, no goals () and no victories in the series.

Ecccshuuualllly, come to think of it, probably not with the Blooze. It does seem to be a sacred thing to them.

:rambo::boxing:

Yesssirree... a way of life and a belief system that's probably gonna knock their asses right out of the series reeeal soon! ;)

This series along with the Habs/Bruins are arguably the most entertaining to watch for a number of reasons.

Might be the rivalry!
