Hello all,

As I am sure most of you have guessed, I am Flyers fan. However I am trying to reach out to you all simply as a fan of the NHL. To be more specific . . . a disgruntled fan of the NHL. I believe this league has gone backwards in the last 15 years (maybe more), it has taken great strides alienate its most loyal fans. I want to unite the hardcore fans who feel this way in all of the NHL's city's and allow their voice to be heard. I have recently started a new blog for people to voice their opinions. I think Red Wings fans in particular will find my first post rather interesting.

Check it out, feel free to give me suggestions.

Right now this league is in trouble, we can change it. If you don't mind I plan on sticking around your site as well, I am very impressed with what you have going on here.

Good stuff. You had me at "alienate its most loyal fans." I think Bettman has done this with his strides to gain new fans, while forgetting the people that got the league where it is in the first place.

i like what you're saying but i also noticed you were complaining about the NHL logo being changed?? is it that big of a deal? To me, it just made the site come off as just missing the good ol days and not wanting to accept change.

just my 2 cents..

Did the logo really need to be changed in the first place? I think when they did that it was indicative of what the people who run the league are all about.

Quoted for truth.

There's a "hardcore" culture I find regarding anything where people long too much for the "old days". I've seen it in music, I've seen it in sports, politics, life, whatever. There's no logic to it, and while it's perfectly rational to hate Bettman, since he sucks ass, the OP's rant is much of the same old-timer stuff I've heard before and am not terribly impressed with.

I kinda think that the OP is also upset because one of his team's players rightfully got suspended, and in his overreaction is declaring war on the NHL.

You are certainly open to disagree with me. But let me ask you, when was the last time MLB, the NFL or the NBA drastically changed it's logo? My blog has very little do with the Flyers and much more to do with the NHL as it is. If your happy with the shoot out, that your thing. Personally I think it is mickey mouse.

I agree with alot you have to say bettmans just trying to save face he knows he has destroyed this league and alot of teams so he tries to shift everything on the positive side to make himself look good .he has tried to sell the game through expansion to cities that dont fing hockey intriging while watering down the talent that the nhl needs to stay competitive.i am a firm believer that you need to know the game to grow the game

I've complained about the shootout, but I also complained about tie games, which were bulls***. The post-regulation hockey is still in a more experimental type phase (being that it's still new), and it would be far more reasonable if they'd go at least 10 minutes, preferably 20 minutes, before settling the match in a shootout.

I don't quite understand what your beef with a logo is though. Can you give a comparison of them side by side and why this visualization is such a travesty worth all the attention you're giving it? Or are there more specific things you can iterate on and the logo is more like a metaphor?

That is exactly it. I have a laundry list of issues I have with the league, as I am sure most of you do as well. Like I said, the league changed something that really didn't need to be changed, they did it to try and attract new fans with their shiny silver logo . . . just like they tried to attract fans with a glowing puck, or changing the rules to create more scoring, when all they had to do was simply call the rules that were on the books. To me that logo is a symbol of what the league has become . . .

There are a few changes they have made to improve the game

1.) Removing the red line

2.) Moving the face off to the penalized players defensive zone

I will agree there. The officiating has become worse and worse as time has gone along, and simply enforcing these rules would have gone a long way. On the other hand, the FoxTrax thing was not really an NHL gimmick -- it was a FOX gimmick.

The Red Line removal was necessary to open up the game, likewise the faceoff rule, goalie-trapezoid rule, line-change-on-an-icing rule, and so on. These are all improvements that should have been made, and really these would have been necessary even if the refs had been calling penalties as they should've been.

While I disagree about the trapazoid thing, I agree with everything else.

I really enjoy the shootout, its fun to watch and its waay better than tie games IMO. The game overall i think is going in a pretty good direction except i dont like the ticky-tack penalties that we see get called every game.

well the parade the penalty box presents an awfully large problem, and I'd say that the direction of the game is going downhill because of it.

The NFL actually changed its logo just last year. It's less drastic than the NHL's change, but then again I don't think the NHL's change is terribly earthshaking either.

Ok, I give up, I was trying to do a side-by-side on the old and new NFL logos, but it's not that big of a deal. Basically, they changed the font of the NFL letters, reduced the number of stars, changed the angle of the football at the top and streamlined the shield shape.

For the NHL, I actually like the current one better. Silver and black is sharp and works for hockey.

As long as I'm in here, I might as well tell the OP that I like his take on the Penguins story. Sucking your way into a bunch of high draft picks and not screwing it up is being cleverly disguised as organizational genius by Bettman. Congrats to them for being smart enough to be the worst team in the league and winning the lottery in Crosby's year, then knowing how to count their money when the success-starved fans there came back (and watched on TV) in droves.

Like I said in the thread we had about it, Garth Snow will be called a great GM and Charles Wang a great owner within 5 years if Tavares lives up the hype. It'll be no more true then than it is now, but winning tends to get people overrated in a big way.

Frankly, keeping that franchise alive and in Pittsburgh is an accomplishment in and of itself. It would have been very easy, and financially profitable, to book it for Kansas City, and most owners would have done it. And then LGWers would have lumped Pittsburgh in with Winnipeg and Hartford as places "where hockey belongs" where Bettman destroyed hockey so he could have more teams in the South.

Just for the lazy people or the onese wondering about the logo changes for the nhl.

2049.gif3078.gif

I have to agree with the OP about that. Nearly 90 years of the same logo to the new edgy shiney one. But that is the least of my worries about the NHL. Good blog, and as mentioned, paragraphs FTW!
