drwscc 212 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 I still think Chara takes it. Green has great offensive numbers, but his D aint that good. Nick is gonna take a hit due to the boredom factor this year (his numbers weren't all that awesome as in years past).
Jocke 53 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Do they take play offs into account? Cause Green hasn't played very good in the games against the Rangers..
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Do they take play offs into account? Cause Green hasn't played very good in the games against the Rangers.. No, the winner was already determined (voted on) about 1-2 weeks ago.
CopenhagenWing 38 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 ^No. Btw, am I the only one finding it odd that, when showing highlights of the Norris finalists, NHL Live showed nothing but goals?
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Congrats to Nick. He's the long shot to win, assuming Chara and Green are the others (which is more than likely). Logic points to Green winning it, but it would be pretty funny if Lids got another. Personally, I wish they upped the list to, say, 5 nominees.

And no, it's not odd. Offensive firepower usually is what's mostly looked at for the Norris. As some others have argued with me relentlessly about, that's what gets the attention. egroen 384 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 (edited) Lidstrom deserves it - much better all-around player than both Chara and Green. Coffey was destroying his peers by as much as 40% when he won his Norrises based mainly on offense; Green was not even 10% higher than his closest competitor. On his best days Chara can play as good of defense as a 38 year-old Lidstrom, but Lidstrom clearly beats him in the offensive zone. Plus Lidstrom's +/- is much better, and on a team that let in a hell of a lot more goals than Boston. Maybe the writers are sick of Lidstrom winning it, but he clearly deserves it. If you think about it that way, there are actually about 200 or so that the voters can vote for. The 3 you see here are simply the players that received the most votes. They are not nominees. Oh yeah, that's right, I think someone (might have been you) iterated that in the Calder topic as well, and I just forgot.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Congrats to Nick, he deserves it and is the best all-around player. However, I think he may not win, due to the bias and boredom factor -- he's won it "too many" times. I've seen this before, where the most deserving player is passed over for a new face, despite the evidence. It's fine, Nick probably only really wants one trophy this season. Well, maybe two. Another Conn Smythe would be nice, as well.

Check your math, based purely on the numbers, Green is 14% better than the closest competitor in pts and 31% better on goals. However, if you adjust his stats to take into account the fact he played 10+ games fewer than most, he'd be 31% better on pts and 61% better on goals. I was going off memory -- with only a few games to go, he was 9% up on Markov. I argue on this one a lot - but games not played is not a bonus, and in fact is a huge negative. Green was doing absolutely nothing to help his team out those 14 games he did not play. Lidstrom, even if he is not scoring points is still often the MVP of the game, because of his defensive play. Something we can rarely say about Mike Green. In fact, the last person to miss as many games as Green has this year, and still win the Norris was Bobby Orr. I am not ready to start comparing Green to Orr and Coffey. Edited April 23, 2009 by egroen
Phazon 24 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Lidstrom deserves it for the sole reason that he is +31 on one of the worst goaltending stats this regular season
EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 And in other news, the Pope is Catholic and bears s*** in the woods. Congrats to Nick (and Chara and Green), he's a fantastic player and a fantastic person and I'm rooting for him every step of the way.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted April 23, 2009 I still think Chara takes it. Green has great offensive numbers, but his D aint that good. Nick is gonna take a hit due to the boredom factor this year (his numbers weren't all that awesome as in years past). Nick's numbers this year are pretty darned good. He's #2 amongst defensemen in +/-, he's #5 in points, he has only 30 PIM, he plays against the opposition's best players every game, he's wonderful on both sides of the ice, he barely ever makes any sort of mistake, and he does all the small things that help get the job done. I think neither Green nor Chara can claim all of that.
T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted April 23, 2009 I'd be shocked if Lidstrom won it this year, considering the appeal of the other two candidates and that Lidstrom's won it so many times... I think it'll go to Chara

I agree that missed games might hurt him a bit, I was just using that to illustrate that offensively, he was blowing everyone else out of the water. Does that mean he should win the Norris? No, but obviously, he got a lot of votes, so you never know. I've I were a betting man, I'd say Lidstrom comes in 3rd, but it's hard to tell. Honestly, I think some probably voted for him simply due to reputation which is wrong, but at the same time, I think some might have not voted for him because they wanted someone new, which is also wrong (I think the thought process here might be that they consciously thought about whether he was really deserving or it is just reputation, so they didn't vote for him). This is just a guess of course, Lidstrom may win by a landslide, you never know.
Guest mindfly Report post Posted April 23, 2009 Chara, Green, Lidstrom Hmm Mason was the first name of the three and he's expected to win, Chara is the first name of the three... what if they write it in the actual order as a lil hint
