Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Brashear is a piece of s***. Always has been. That's kinda rough. He's taken his licks too.. if you remember good ol' Marty's slash to the head. At one point Brash was the type of goon that could score, but now he's exemplary of how useless goons are today.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 WTF is wrong with these people? Can't they be physical without turning into goons? My God, it's like someone let loose a preschool on the ice and gave them all sticks. I expect little kids to pull crap like that, not grown men. They all need to grow up. EuroTwin 240 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 http://capitalsoutsider.com/2009/04/27/mik...ded-for-game-7/ Norris Trophy Candidate, Mike Green, might also be suspended. Hearings this afternoon. It looks like ESPN was being their usual stupid self when it came to hockey: **UPDATE #2 : ESPN has now retracted their retraction, stating that Mike Green is NOT under consideration for suspension, nor is Shaone Morrissonn. The only player to have a hearing today at 1PM will be Donald Brashear. ESPN states that Brasher’s hit on Betts is the reason for possible suspension, while Capitals Insider reports that it is actually the pregame incident that is under review. Seriously ESPN, why do you even try to report on the NHL? Brashear's hit was ugly. I would not be surprised to see him gone for a while. Let's say the Caps lose the series and Brashear gets suspended for 5 games. That carries over to next season, right?

Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 27, 2009 (edited) Ok so doesn't involve Mike Green. Glad it's cleared up, and f*** you ESPN. Sorry sacks of s*** can't report hockey if their life depended on it. Giev TSN pleze. Edited April 27, 2009 by Shoreline

I would not be surprised to see him gone for a while. Let's say the Caps lose the series and Brashear gets suspended for 5 games. That carries over to next season, right? Yes, that is correct. He would have to sit out 4 games next season before he could play. The same thing happened with the Flames goalie (name??) that slashed Franzen with his stick in the '07 playoffs. He was suspended for 3 games I believe, but since Calgary lost the next game. He still has 2 games left to serve. So if someone were to sign him, he'd have to sit out 2 games before he could play. 55fan 5,133 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 McClennen (spelling?) was the Flames goalie. I have to say that all of this is at least making for an interesting time, but it's confusing.

Giev TSN pleze. Maybe if ESPN went back to carrying hockey games like they used to, they might be better at it. Right now expecting ESPN to report on hockey correctly would be like going to the MLB Network for soccer news.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 What was wrong with that hit? wasn't an elbow.. he just raised his fore-arm. Are you serious? I'm not convinved it's an elbow/forearm based on video, but if you hit a guy with your forearm, it's the same thing as an eblow, I think you are too caught up in anatomy. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted April 27, 2009 Typical anti-enforcer B.S. coming from you. Goon =/= enforcer Aaron Downey would be an example of an enforcer. Claude Lemieux was a goon. I see a difference at least.

Lemieux could sure as heck score. I hate the bastard but he was simply a pest, not really a goon, who made some stupid choices when checking people. But yeah, leave it to GMR to get his enforcer panties twisted over a rather harmless comment that made no mention of them.

I'm not convinved it's an elbow/forearm based on video, but if you hit a guy with your forearm, it's the same thing as an eblow, I think you are too caught up in anatomy. It was a high hit, no doubt. That said, leading with ooe's elbow, padded or not, is worse than leading with the forearm. Brash is pretty beefy, there's a good deal of muscle on his arms - I don't think his forearm would have broken Betts' face. I don't think of Brashear as being a goon. I think he's a solid 4th liner who plays his role very well. Part of that is certainly to intimidate and inflict pain and play on the edge of the rules, he usually does a pretty good job of it. Occasionally he crosses the line, and when he does he pays for it. He's been okay in this playoff series, but he's expendable enough that I'm sure the Caps won't be crying over losing him for a game or 3.
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted April 27, 2009 And yet he's playing in the playoffs, who'da thunk it?! esteef Not now.. Brashear has shown to be useful in the past. A physical player who can score, and the scoring part is what's useful. But if his stupidity is going to cost the team in PKs, or even lost ice time in having a player in the box/thrown out, then he will likely lose that spot. And that's what separates the goons from the merely physical players. It's all about picking spots.

But yeah, leave it to GMR to get his enforcer panties twisted over a rather harmless comment that made no mention of them. I don't doubt that Lemieux could score, he did win the Conn Smythe award in '95. However, when I think of a prototypical "goon", his is the first name that comes to mind. He was physical, but unnecessarily so. And I think calling some of his hits "stupid choices" is being kind.

I know exactly what your stance on this issue is, so don't pretend like you weren't going there because of semantics. Brashear's antics do not mean that players like him are useless or don't belong in the NHL. It was just a dumb incident on his part. And he's not just some dumb goon, because he's still a pretty good enforcer and has been in their lineup for the past couple of seasons, up until his injury this year. Really I could go on, but there's no point in doing so. Edited April 27, 2009 by GMRwings1983
