Brian Burke was reluctant to offer his opinion. As the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who didn't make the playoffs, Burke questioned the value of his analysis of teams that did.

But when one of the teams is the Anaheim Ducks, the franchise he was running when the season started, his opinion has extra meaning.

While he wasn't making any bold predictions, he offered a warning to those picking the Detroit Red Wings over the Anaheim Ducks: Anaheim is more than capable of eliminating the reigning champs.

"They can beat Detroit, they have the components," Burke said by phone from Switzerland. "Right now, they have one of the hottest goaltenders in the league, two Hall of Fame defensemen and a couple of big studs up front. They have balance, they have four lines who can play and they are physical."

Five things to watch

1. Can Jonas Hiller stay hot? We can deconstruct the failings of the San Jose Sharks all day long, but their biggest mistake was running into a hot goalie. Hiller helped the Ducks get into the playoffs and was outstanding against San Jose, finishing the series 4-2, with a 1.65 goals-against average and .957 save percentage. "This time of year when the goalie is hot, you just kind of leave him alone and let him play," Ducks forward Ryan Getzlaf said. "That's what we've done down the stretch."

2. The effect of Detroit's long layoff: Detroit hasn't played a game in more than a week while the Ducks are fresh off an emotional upset of the Sharks. Ducks coach Randy Carlyle knows how it works: If the Ducks lose, it'll be because they are tired. If the Ducks win, it'll be because Detroit had too much time off. "You can never tell those things until after the fact," Carlyle said. "I think it's important that we played in a pretty intense series."

The series:

All times ET; * -- if necessary

Friday, May 1 Anaheim at Detroit, 7 p.m.

Sunday, May 3 Anaheim at Detroit, 2 p.m.

Tuesday, May 5 Detroit at Anaheim, 10:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 7 Detroit at Anaheim, 10:30 p.m.

Sunday, May 10 Anaheim at Detroit, 5 p.m. *

Tuesday, May 12 Detroit at Anaheim, TBD

Thursday, May 14 Anaheim at Detroit, TBD

Complete second-round series schedule

3. Pronger is familiar with the Red Wings: This is the seventh time Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger has taken on the Red Wings in the playoffs. Almost a quarter of his career postseason games (34 of 140 games) are against Detroit. He can draw on those experiences to help beat the Wings. "Year to year, it's always different," Pronger said. "I've been fortunate enough to be on some teams that have (beat Detroit)."

4. The two deepest defense corps in the playoffs: There's plenty of capable scoring, but Detroit and Anaheim have the two deepest groups of defensemen still playing. There are four former Norris Trophy winners between the two teams, and with players like Nicklas Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski, Scott Niedermayer and Pronger slowing the forwards, scoring won't be easy. "It's pretty scary to think that that many good D-men are going to be on the ice at the same time," Getzlaf said.

5. Chris Osgood's health: What would a Red Wings playoff preview be without some mention of the embattled goalie? Osgood quieted doubters with a strong showing against the Columbus Blue Jackets, but there were questions about his health following a shaky Game 4. He said he felt discomfort in the elimination game but expects to be 100 percent when facing the Ducks. He'll need to be.

Off to a strong postseason start

F Johan Franzen, Detroit: He's emerging as one of hockey's most clutch performers. He scored the game-winner in Game 4 against the Blue Jackets and was tied with teammate Marian Hossa for the most game-winning goals during the regular season. He had six points in the four-game sweep of Columbus and was also instrumental in shutting down Rick Nash.

Needs to raise his game

F Teemu Selanne, Ducks: Secondary scoring will be crucial for Anaheim in this series, considering its top line of Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry will see a lot of Lidstrom. Selanne must be better than his two-point effort against the Sharks.

Our pick

Detroit in seven: The Red Wings have more depth up front than Anaheim and over the course of a long, hard-fought series, Detroit's advantage at forward will be the difference.

2 hall of famers... oh no!

Oh wait...

Lidstrom's a lock.

Chelios will- Norris, 3 Cups, leading scorer for the 'Hawks a couple times.

Rafalski is developing well enough he might.

Rafalski is only a few years younger than Lidstrom, he's not going to be doing that much more developing. He's not a HOFer.

Brian Burke. <_< Wasn't he an attorney at one time? No s*** they have two hall of fame defensemen. They're a great team. This is going to be a hard fought series, thats not news to anybody. These are the last two Stanley Cup champs playing each other. Anaheim is big and nasty and they just knocked out the President's Trophy winners. Detroit is ultra skilled, mentally strong and disciplined, and plays the best puck possession hockey in the league. Its gonna be one hell of a series. I am taking "early release Friday" here on the west coast and parking my arse infront of the Hockey Night In Canada with a pizza and some beer, turning off all the phones, and gonna watch some great Stanley Cup Playoff Hockey. Go Wings!

Yes, now he's a wannabe NHL GM as Kevin Lowe put it, probably because he's not a former player.

But yes he used to be a lawyer. I look forward to a day in which we can actually hunt them and he's near the top of the checklist.

Burke is a blowhard and sucks pucks. Always has, always will. It truly is none of his business what Anaheim does or doesn't have in store for the Wings. He bailed out of Anaheim (good for them!) and went to TO, to do nothing good for the Leafs. I don't even want to know what he was doing in Switzerland.

Shuddup and keep your "reluctant" opinions to yourself, Blowhard. <_<

"If the Ducks lose, it'll be because they are tired. If the Ducks win, it'll be because Detroit had too much time off."

Is the bolded part supposed to be a knock against Burke? Just because you don't know something, how is that a knock against someone?

Let me be clear, I don't like the guy that much, but I can recognize that he is a very, very intelligent individual. Also, he was asked a question, to which he didn't understand why his opinion mattered, but answered anyway. All he said was that Anahiem had a good chance at winning based on what they have. This is all true, not sure what is wrong with what he said other than it wasn't "Are you serious??? Anahiem has NO CHANCE, they will be steamrolled!!"

Burke is in Switzerland attending the World Championships and is planning on meeting with Gustavsson, who the Leafs are pursuing.

Anaheim is tough. They are a quality team. HOWEVER, Burke says we should fear them beacuse of two hall of fame defensemen , a hot goalie and a "couple" of studs up front.

Well, we have moer than two hall of fame defensemen, a hot goalie, and a lot more than a "couple" studs up front.

He seems to have forgotten this.

Media covering hockey, most of them it seems, ain't all that knowledgable on the Red Wings Brian, thanks.

Still get NO respect.

""This ain't the "softass Red Wings" labelled team of a few years ago, hockey world! This team, not many of you know, welcomes ANY and all teams to visit. Thanks.""
