The OFFICIAL Stuart For PP Thread

Something I've noticed this season, and particularly in the post season, is that good things seem to happen when Brad Stuart gets PP time. I don't have any hard numbers or stats to back this up, but my perception is that Stuart plays the point really well on the PP. He seems to know when to pinch, he's got a good shot, and he has some nice chemistry with Kronwall (or Lidstrom for that matter). Maybe he's just getting lucky bounces like last night, but it I have this feeling that the PP works really nicely when he's out there.

Am I off the wall or does anyone else see this too? Fully healthy, I'd love to roll Lids/Rafi and Stu/Jr. on the PP points. I know that screws up the lefty/righty thing that Sammy provides, but I've just liked Stuart on the point.

I agree completely... and while Raffi is out, I'd go one further and say Ericsson/Lidstrom... I hate Samuelsson on the point, he can't keep a puck in the zone to save his life... I don't care if he's a right handed shot...

I could see Ericsson also getting some PP time, but for me, I don't want to put too much on the shoulders of the rookie, despite him playing really well. He's facing the top Ducks line a lot, double shifting some, and getting significant PK time. Maybe the Wings are right to ease him a little slower into the PP squad.

Sammy does pretty well on the PP, when he pinches down low. I don't think he's good at keeping the puck at the point or at getting his shot through to the keeper from 55 feet back. I think he's good as sort of the "5th" point man, that fills in during injuries or other times in which a top 4 guy (Lids/Rafi/Kronner/Stu) are unable to play.

I agree 100% - both Ericsson and Stuart should be getting PP time ahead of Samuelsson.

He is just brutal out there and usually can not even get the puck past the PKer literally 5 feet in front of him.

i want ericsson on PP he has a f***in slap shot man

and he's smart with the puck... plus, guys are always more hesitant to block 100mph, or at least they'll think twice after getting pegged once real good

Stuart played on average 19 seconds of PP time per game during the regular season (primarily mop up seconds at the end of a PP). He was on the ice for 1 PPG for (1G).

So far in the playoffs Stuart has played on average 1:45 of PP time per game. He's been on the ice for 4 PPG for (1G 2A).

Sammy needs to gtfo...

Until Rafalski gets back, I'm afraid that it is going to be Sammy. Stuart is absolutely fine on the PP and pairs nicely with Kronwall. Ericsson needs to get a shot out there with Lidstrom. Sammy is just terrible and only out there because he is right handed.

Everything is better than Sammy in PP

But Stuart is a HUGE defensive liability... I cannot count how many huge saves Osgood had to make because of him. Let's trade him at the offseason, we can get better for less money.

I would rather have all defensemen on the PP point. They have the right instincts, when you have to skate back the other way, There are very few forwards I have ever liked on the PP, Yzerman and Fedorov are on that short list.

Stuart's been on the ice for FOUR PPGs? Thats insane.

I agree with what everyone else in this thread has said. And I'll continue to say it over and over again - there comes a point when skill trumps a right-handed shot. Reminds me of the brutal J-Willy days.

Also, I've noticed that getting PP time has made Stuart a more confident player. Hes played his best hockey all year in this series, in my opinion. I remember him saying something about he doesn't get any PP time here in Detroit like he had for the other teams hes played for, and he sounded like he was lamenting that fact.

Well as we know, the defenses are the most important positions on the power play situation. I think Stuart is a really good fit with Kronwall and Lids in the PP units. I seriously do not know why Babcock keep using Sammy on Power play unit. I do not say he is atrocious but he cannot shoot hard. He looks to do only wrist shot but that does not work well against Hiller. I have nothing against Sammy but as I kept mentioning this story that we should remove Sammy from PP units, he should not be only PP units and putting one of Ericsson or Stuart on PP unit with Nick.

Besides, I think most of our power plays were converted by Zetterberg line. The thing is, the 1st line has to step up for PP units. During the regular season and the series against the BJ, our first line looked pretty good on PP time. However, at this point, they sometimes looked not being able to even set up the power play position and wasted the time. I saw many threads here about our PP situation which has been good but bashing sammy but with criticizing his incompetent PP play level, we have to blame our first line too. It is not I bash our first line: Hossa, Datsyuk, and Holmstrom. They really have to be looked brightly at least since this time. Their playing level is unacceptable.

Wasn't he known as the offensive D-man when he was in the Kings and the Flames? ( do not remember correctly though)

He has been really good throughout the playoff so I hope he gets some ice time during the period of PP.
