NHLrules? 32 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I think this would be a great way for hockey to expand. Get out of the joke called the NHL and form your own league. At the end of the year, the winner of the NHL would play the winnr of the new league for a world title. What do you guys think?
LeftWinger 5,154 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I think so! Although they'd have some problems when Television deals. I am sure the couldn't get VS. But Espn, Fox, ABC would love to have them, since they wouldn't be asking for billions in revenue... Of course not sure if they could wrestle the Stanley Cup away from the NHL. NHLrules? 32 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 The winner of the world championship game takes the cup. LEt Bettman have his las vegas southern hockey. Let the profitable teams that make money make the rules. The Champ game would follow international rules.

CenterIce 83 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) The NHL won't allow this because, just like what they did when Phoenix declared bankruptcy, the league can take over a team, if they feel it is not being run to "their" standards. vladdy16 2,154 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 Who would pay the revenue sharing then? Toronto alone pays about 14 million, the highest in the league. Good luck with that.

Thats why you break away. Once you stop wearing the NHL logo you can do what you want. The NHL can continue to force hockey into small unprifitable areas till they go bankrupt. The new league can then buy the NHL logo etc. and come out as the reformed NHL. That would take time but in the mean time wouldnt it be nice to see the Original NHL. vladdy16 2,154 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 no need for revenue sharing when every team is making a profit My point being that the NHL would turn this into a civil war to prevent it from happening. Too much revenue loss.
NHLrules? 32 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I dont think they can stop it. Each team is a private company, independant of the NHL. They just operate under a co-op of teams. At least thats how I see it. The teams would not be allowed to use the NHL logo etc but who cares.
evilmrt 636 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 I was hoping something like this would materialize during the lockout a while back. However, I think owners are too frightened of going out alone, and the threat of legal action from the NHL. I also believe that the league reserves the right to the team logos and names? This is a little drastic. However, I think that within a NHL season, there should be a "Original Six Series" where we might see a week or two of matchups where the winner would get bragging rights and some kind of trophy (like some of the games in college football, for example), but no other special standing when it comes to points, etc. The league does not do nearly enough to capitalize on the appeal of these six teams and what it could do for its popularity nationwide. Instead of a bunch of teams that are only popular in their local regions, we could see MANY people excited about the original six teams.
NHLrules? 32 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 Yeah like the most heavily populated areas of both countries.
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) The league has ultimate ownership. The teams are not independent. You could form your own new league, but it would have to be with all new teams, players, logos, etc. Two examples to prove my point are, as I stated, Phoenix being taken over because of the bankruptcy situation and NYR suing to not have to make their website conform to NHL standards (a suit they lost because the NHL has the final say. It is not possible. Edited May 6, 2009 by CenterIce
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 6, 2009 This is retarded. In no sport has a dual major league system ever worked out. There's a reason the WHA didn't work out. There's a reason the AFL merged with the NFL and the USFL folded. There's a reason the ABA didn't work. There's a reason the Federal League failed. This has been tried before, many, many times. One league or the other will be perceived as most desirable and will get all the best players and the TV money. The other will fail or merge and then it's right back to the status quo. Toronto, Montreal, Boston, New York R, Chicago, Detroit... 4 of those 6 teams are 1-4 in total revenue.... They wouldnt need to revenue share with crappy teams like the Panthers or the Coyotes

At the end of the year, the winner of the NHL would play the winnr of the new league for a world title. What do you guys think? Hell yeah the Original six should leave and take a few valuable franchises with them. How about a league starting with: Detroit Red Wings Toronto Maple Leafs Montreal Canadiens New York Rangers Boston Bruins Chicago Blackhawks St. Louis Blues Philadelphia Flyers Dallas Stars Colorado Avalanche San Jose Sharks Buffalo Sabres I think that'd be an entertaining league, though the Western teams are few and far between which would create problems. The NHL would never let this happen.
