5/9 Playoff GDT

The refs let them play, unless it was possible to put the Pens on the PP.

There were two calls the Caps had to get.

1. Before calling Pens PP, Semin was tripped down in the Pens zone

2. Before the call, one Caps player was cross-checked or interferred by Malkin I think,... Overall, the ref was totally on Penguins side.

The Caps are brutal defensively! Fedorov was undressed by Malkin there.

I know- one of them looked like he was 39 years old! And the other looked like he was on the power play.

Does anyone else find that end to the game laughable?

I had no idea you could pull someone down who didn't have the puck (or was even involved in the play).

So the Pens commit blatent interference in their own zone, leaving one guy on his ass and out of the play, then proceed to attack 5 on 3 in the Washington zone.

******* amazing.

I bet no one from Versus or CBC talks about how the Pens got away with a lot of penalties in the OT, especially the obvious interference penalty down in the Pens zone.

Washington's achilles heel is having zero quality defensive defensemen. If Varlamov isn't standing on his head - and he sure hasn't the past few games - then they're dead.

And all of their offensive defensemen have not showed up. Feds playing defense pretty much sums up that game.

I just looked at the difference between the number of PP's each team has gotten in this series. It's ridiculous. The Pens have a ton more than the Caps.

I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist, but the Pens just seem to always get the good end of bad reffing.

lol @ Boudreau's Ovechkin quote: "he was very good with the puck". Key word: with. That guy floats with the best of them on defense.

Yeah, I was less than impressed with his anything-but-goal-scoring tonight. At one point during a tie-up faceoff in his defensive zone he just took off along the boards hoping his guys would win it and catch him cherry-picking. He must have been near the red line by the time he realized he had to get back.

I noticed that too... ouch, but it's true.

Has Tom Poti ever done anything positive anywhere he's been?

Pens have a cakewalk into the Finals, especially with Boston not likely to make it there.

Famous last words by the last two teams to play the Hurricanes...

I feel bad for my mom though, she's really gotten behind Ovie these playoffs :<

I think you are right. The first two games against the Rangers, the Caps showed what garbage defense really is. They let the 'Rangers OFFENSE' to score 5 goals in two games. Well, we could make a point of quoting Theodore but still, their defenses have played exact same level of hockey.

The thing I can realize from the Caps game is that they go to offensive zone with too much risk leaving the back of defensive zone. Some of this lose should be on Varlamov. He let 2 soft goals this game again. The 3rd goal, I can accept but he has looked shaky since game 4.

One more thing is that, I now really think the NHL organization really controls the referee and make calls on Penguins. It does not matter how many times more Pens got PP times than the Caps. The Caps had chances to get power plays but the referee blew up.

i love how these versus analysts pick their "clutch performers" from anyone but the Wings. They still have Hiller up there - sure the guy has been good - but Franzen schooled him last game. I think Franzen's name oughtta be mentioned. As such is the life of a Red Wings fan, no respect I tell ya.....

Still, I do not know it was done on purpose or just an accident for two players go for different directions; however, still, it looks like an obvious call to be made up.

As does Crosby and Malkin. What's your point?

None of those three backcheck or show interest in the defensive zone. They're all floaters.

I don't think Crosby is as bad as the other two, but I've noticed Malkin, Ovechkin and that other Russian guy Joe Thorntonov float a lot.

Errrr, okay, sure. I didn't mention either one of those two in my post, I don't see how your post had much to do with mine at all. I was pointing out a quote from Boudreau, really had nothing to do with Crosby. Thanks for playing, though.

It's only my profound love for the game of hockey that makes me watch the Canucks. Ten years ago, half the teams in the league played like them; the trapping, the trying to sit on a one goal lead for as long as it takes, etc. Now, they're one of the only teams left that plays that way. It's cost them in this series, especially in game 4, when they tried to protect a 1-0 score by relying on their goaltender to stop everything.

I would hate to see their brand of hockey rewarded with success.

It's not much of a leap of logic to compare Ovi to the only other people in that series who play the same role as him.

Thanks for playing, though.

No problem.

I've got to agree man.

I'm watching too and hoping for a Hawks win. It helps that the Hawks look pretty damn beatable in a 7 game series, but by the time the Wings would get to them Kane might be healthy again.
