Should Maltby Have Had To Give Up #18

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Marian Hossa likes the number 18. I think Maltby should have given it up when The Hoss came on board. I think management should have stepped in if Maltby didn't willingly give it up like Fischer gave up #2 to Hatcher. What do you think?

I don't think you could be more wrong.

Maltby has been a fixture of championship winning teams for over a decade.

Hossa signed a one-year deal.

Asking Maltby to give up 18 would be a complete slap in the face to a player that has been loyal and worked hard for a long time. That's not how the Red Wings operate

I'm pretty sure Maltby is enough of a veteran of this team to be able to keep the number 18, no matter who signed on board.

Frankly, if Hossa or management pushed for Maltby to give it up, I'd be pissed at their lack of respect for the guy.

What the hell is the difference? It was Maltby's number when Hossa got here and it is going to remain Maltby's number. Hossa is #81 as long as he is a Wing. Way off base buddy.

I like Maltby as much as the next guy, but the guy is NOT a hall of famer. The Hoss is a future Hall of Famer. You gotta give up the sweater.

Hall of famer or not, Malts has seniority with this organization - not Hossa. Especially considering Hossa only signed a 1-year deal and Malts has been here for 12 seasons, as someone else mentioned.

I don't care if Hossa is the second coming of Christ. Maltby has been with the Wings for 12 seasons and Hossa has been with the Wings for 1 season. The vet gets to keep his number. Your name is what the Hall of Fame glorifies, not your number.

Hossa being a Hall of Famer is a 50/50 thing.

He's never won anything in his career as of yet, even individually. To me he's not a Hall of Famer.

Maltby is more popular and more liked in Detroit than Hossa. Why would he have to give up his number?

Are we THIS hard up for something to talk about?

I just wanted to talk about SOMETHING ELSE than how bad certain players are playing right now. I think The Hoss should get #18 if he resigns. Maltby should give The Hoss what he wants.

In the future, please ask your mom and dad before posting. People see things like this and say, "Jesus, Wings fans don't know anything about hockey."

No 1--Maltby has been in the league longer than Hossa. So no.

No 2--Maltby has been on the Wings for longer than Hossa has been in the league. So no.

No 3--Hossa was signed as a probable 1 year rental. So no

No 4--Fischer gave up the number to Hatcher but then immediately took it back when Hatcher left, which wasn't originally planned to be only 1 season of service.

No 5--Players don't defer numbers to better players; See:

Anaheim: Rob Neidermayer (44) forced Chris Pronger to wear 25 and Todd Betuzzi to wear 4

Calgary: Rhett Warrener (44) forced Todd Bertuzzi to wear 7 (although you could debate who is better)

NY Rangers: Scott Gomez (19) forced Markus Naslund to wear 91 (again, better player could be argued either way)

No offense dude, but I'm just aggravated today.

When did Hossa ever say that he wants Maltby to give up #18? Hossa wants a Cup, not a number.

Hossa doesn't deserve preferential treatment just for being Hossa.. and certainly not from one of the longest standing team members on our roster.

He has seniority over Hossa, no matter how good Hossa is.. and I'm sure Hossa gladly gave up the number so Maltby could keep it, recognizing the fact that Malts is a veteran to this organization.

The Hoss is the highest paid player on the team. He should get what he wants, and Maltby should be happy to give it up to The Hoss. $$$

I truly cannot understand your mindset at all.

Players take pay cuts to play here. How much money he's getting paid doesn't mean much. And actually, I believe Lidstrom is the highest paid player on our roster. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I read somewhere that part of the team setup was to keep Lids the highest paid player.)

That's the most illogical reason imaginable. Fail dude. Just full of fail.

Wrong. Nicklas Lidstrom is the highest paid on the Wings. Go to bed. There is no way you can skip sleep before school, based on the evidence I've seen.
