T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) Homer's job is to make sure a goalie's face is planted firmly in his own butt-crack. It was only a matter of time before some d-men were going to take exception to that. Lately, he's been getting pushed around for parking in front of the blue ice, and he's been screened as well, keeping him from getting that vital redirection. Watch to see how many cross checks he takes in a game (before and after the whistle). That has to takes it's toll on a guy. I think, eventually, Babs will find a new spot for Homer to make life hell for everyone. Just my opinion (mostly). OMG, does he ever get hammered out there. He plain gets his ass beat, a mugging. And the refs pay him no respect. They figure if he's gonna put himself there, he's gonna pay the price. He's really developed some nice "low post" moves down there, too, to get postion I mean. Edit: ANd his role really doesn't fit what we need out of a 4rth liner anyway. Edited May 31, 2009 by T.Low
WorkingOvertime 536 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Holmstrom's play has been declining, but he is still a valuable asset on the PP. I wouldn't mind seeing him play on the 3rd line next year, but I think he does best when playing with better players that can get it to the net for him (1st or 2nd line). He has taken a lot of punishment in front of the net, and I'm not sure how anyone can ask for him to be traded. He isn't a liability yet, and he can still play his game. I wouldn't be suprised if he retired when his contract is up (he'll be 37), but I want to see him retire with the Wings.

Rocket Queen 30 1 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) Same. Homer is one of those players that I could never see in another team's jersey.. absolutely agree. Of course he's on the decline... he's been taking abuse in front of other teams nets for years and there's not a player in the league that's been better at it. I love Hammer and will cry when he finally decides it's over. He's been so great for us for so long. I'm sure he'll know when he's ready to go. Until then I'm happy he's still out there and always will be. Edited May 31, 2009 by Rocket Queen

Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Holmsy is getting up there in age and I think you probably will see some kind of decline in his play. I think he is still effective and has a great role on this team. You know there's going to come a time when a thread like this will come up and it's going to have our Captains' name on it. Some of our guys are getting older and I think that's why we are bringing up some younger players to help fill the holes. I just hope we can concentrate on this Finals Series and hope we can keep the Cup in Detroit. Let's Go Detroit Red Wings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 So far the best argument given for Ninety-SUX being in there during 5 on 5 play is that nobody gets their ass handed to them like Holmstrom does. Can you see why I'm calling for him to only be played during the power play?

Can you see why I'm calling for him to only be played during the power play? Actually... it's not that nobody gets their ass handed to them like Holmstrom. It's that he takes that abuse and gives it right back. That's not getting your ass handed to you. That's grit and heart and the kind player you want on your team when its about winning battles of will and determination, which is crucial in the finals. You have your opinions, and you're entitled to them, but you're missing the mark on your argument against Holmstrom in the line up and you're not going to change anyone else's mind. The coach is doing that for me. I told everyone about Holmstrom's decline after I noticed everyone going after Hossa and Datsyuk early in the Ducks series. I knew something was off way back then, so I started watching more closely. It was crystal clear after that - Ninety-SUX can't play 5 on 5 anymore. Everybody disagreed at the start, of course, because of their intense loyalty to "Homer". That condition is now known as the Holmstrom Hard-On (HHO). Now that Babcock has figured it out and has stopped playing him with our front 6, a lot of people on here are starting to realize Holmstrom's lack of ability to compete 5 on 5, as well. That's why I'm not the only one ranting anymore about good ol' Ninety-SUX. The stats I've posted back up everything I've said, so there's really no reason to continue arguing against this. "But Homer takes a beating out there, and we all love to see our Homer cross-checked in the back and pushed around in front of the net." Well, some of us like it. I don't. I'd rather have speed players pressing the other team's defense and crashing the net for good scoring chances.

It's pretty interesting that on one hand you say that there's no reason to keep arguing over this issue while on the other hand you keep harping on it. Like I said... of course he's on the decline.. dude isn't as young as he once was, but you're completely disrespecting his contributions to this team by trashing on him the way you are. We get it, you don't like him. I don't like every player on the team all the time myself, but you're speaking of Holmstrom as though he's somehow hampered our progression in the post season. Dude... do you not realize we're in the finals... and leading? It's also funny that you describe people's loyalty to Holmstrom as a hard-on when you're obviously attempting to contain a huge boner for him.
BowHuntingFool 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 Its obvious that JR doesn't get it, but thats no big deal. I be willing to bet that every young player for the Wings gets it and have nothing but respect for Homer!
Wingman 0 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 (edited) ...Ninety-SUX...Holmstrom Hard-On (HHO)... To me, using this kind of insulting nick-names (repeatedly) for a player with such a long history of loyalty and sacrificing play with the Red Wings -- the very team I suppose you are a fan of -- pretty much disqualifies your saying on this matter. Sorry. As for Homer, his days as a 1:st line may very well be over. Babcock will have to figure out what role will fit him best during upcoming seasons. P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted May 31, 2009 I don't care if his game is getting worse and who knows, maybe he scores 60 points next season. Some players play bad sometimes. Some players even have bad months or bad seasons. I like him and I'd like him even if he scores an own goal on purpose. I've been a fan of Red Wings so long that I've become fond of the players. People get their kicks from different things. If someone likes to have an obsession with and criticize an athlete, then why not. I spend my time concentrating on things that I like instead. Guest blueadams Report post Posted June 1, 2009 #1) anyone that would even casually utter the phrase "nintey-sux" is not a real red wings fan. period. #2) bottom line, homer is getting older - no one in the league takes the night in and night out beatings that he does; obviously, its taking its toll. he's not a great 5 on 5 player. he shouldnt be on a top two line. but when hes on, there still isnt a better net-presence in the league. if im babs, i put him on the 4th line next year with Drapes and Malts...i rest him up, save his legs and most importantly his back. then i put him out there in front of the net on the power play with all the energy in the world. he can still be utilized very well. Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Homer with 2 assists tonight. And three in the last three games. If he hadn't touched the puck on the Flip goal and Flip still scored, he should be lauded for his play on the rebound and for taking that crosscheck. That's the kind of thing that doesn't always show up on the scoreboard but is huge. Thankfully, he got a deserving point on that trip to the net.
BowHuntingFool 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 Wasn't it Malkin who came out of the box and went straight for Homer instead of Fil, leaving him wide open to score the goal??

Notice who had 2 guys on his back which left Fil wide open for the goal... well did ya?? :siren: I did see that. He's had a couple decent games in the last 3 games. My favorite play of his was the ot winner that Helm scored in game 5 of chicago series. Homer was directly responsible for that tap in, but didn't get any props on here. It slightly moved on me during that play!!!!

Can you see why I'm calling for him to only be played during the power play? Hey buddy, if all you can do is throw insults and post stat sheets, why not try being a Pittsburgh fan? You'd fit right in. All kidding aside, there is no stat for "having your big ass in front of the goalie" which Holmstrom does with perfection. Sometimes he tips it and gets the goal, sometimes he doesn't. But he's screened plenty of goals in the playoffs, so why not be a trooper and drop the ninety-SUX and HHO and show some maturity? Sargeslide 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2009 How many years as Homer been taking abuse and playing hard for the Wings? How many times is his name on the cup? How many times have the leauge tweeked the rules in front of the net becuase of him? Yeah, after all that he has done, he can be a little slower. But other teams still respect his abilities, and plan for him. The Demoltion Man still belongs in Detroit and I hope he retires as a Wing, he has earned it! He is one of US, a hardworking, gritty guy that busts his butt to do his job! Sargeslide
