Sources say Chris Neil turned down the Ottawa Senators' offer of $1.7-million per year and will likely go to free agency unless there are further developments tonight.

Neil, 30, tied a career-low with ten points and set a career-low with a minus-13 in 60 games last season.

The 6-foot-1, 214-pound right winger can still mix it up, however, getting in 14 fights last season; his highest total since 2002-2003.

mentioned by whom?

it's not noteworthy to anyone on this forum but there is a guy on hockeyfights.com named "seward" who comes into the forums once in a blue moon and he'll say something like "godard to pens", or "laraque to habs", he keeps it short and sweet but he is right like 90% of the time

but yea you'd have to know this guy's rep to appreciate him posting something like this...

...but i'm psyched!!!!

"The Red Wings might finally be in market for tough guy! Keep an eye on Colton Orr/and or Neil...Not a ton of money so bet Orr"

:puke: NO!!! Please God NO!!! Do NOT let Neil come to Detroit!!! I remember Neil from the days when Grand Rapids played in the old IHL, and the only thing that tool bag was good for was a cheap hit and two chicken s--- fights a game. That hit and brawl between Buffalo and Ottawa a few year back proves my point. If Detroit wants a tough guy than they should re- sign Downey.

Can Orr play hockey better than a guy like Downey? I know Neil is better than Downey, but I really don't know much about Orr other than that he was a legit heavy weight at one point.

yeah Orr is much better than Downey in both the fighting aspect and playing.. he improved a lot last offseason which is good hopefully he continues those same strides.. he can keep possession during a cycle and is responsible (enough) defensively.. I think the Rags might have thrown him into the fire a bit last year by using him in a shutdown role but I guess they were really that confident in him... he was -15 which doesn't help his cause but he was literally against the other team's top lines a lot of the time

definitely one of the most responsible enforcers out there and he's still young and improving... probably why he played 82 games last year and the playoffs (until Brashear was suspended)

Chris Neil would be a great fit. But he is NOT worth much more than 1.7 million.

Much less actually. LGW collective mancrush or not, I'll be pissed if we spend $2M on him.

I could care less. We need someone to fill the tough guy role, and I'm not interested in his ability to skate nor his ability to perform the triple axle on the ice.

Of course, I'm in the LGW minority, since most posters here have this obession with seeing an enforcer who can fight, score 50 points, and not take any minor penalties (Ever!!)

Orr is better skater (wich is not really hard to be) and fighter than Downey.

My 1st choice would be Neil - but he's going to ask for $2.5M - I can see him in Toronto

Orr is more logical choice - we NEED someone CHEAP to step-up in physical aspect and he's good choice...

Guest Hatethedrake!
For the right price, I would welcome Neil or Orr to this team with open arms.

Neil will be signed by the Leafs. Orr is the cheaper (and maybe better) option. He could be signed for less than 1 mil likely.

I don't care how much you fight, if you have 10 points and are a -13 in 60 games you're not worth more than $1.7M. Hell, even that seems expensive to me.

Ottawa sucked last year, which explains both those stats. For that money, though, I'd rather pay less to have a real enforcer.

The key to the "Chris Neil turns down 1.7M offer from the Ottawa Senators" might have a lot less to do with the "1.7" and a lot more to do with the "Ottawa Senators" part. Who wants to willingly climb into that black hole?
