OFFICIAL: 12y, $62.4m makes Hossa a 'Hawk

I used to feel ....

Full

Again, Hossa almost sounded worried about facing boos. Almost:

"I hope it won't be that bad," Hossa said. "Everybody knew I came to Detroit for basically one year. It would be tough for me to sign long term. If I sign, probably another five guys wouldn't be able to sign or someone would be traded. That would be hard to deal with. It was time for me to move on. Chicago is hungry. They haven't won the Stanley Cup in a long time (since 1961). Detroit is a great hockey town with lots of history. This is a young team; they want to go for it."

He said Chicago is hungry and in the same f'ing sentence says "Detroit is a team with alot of history"

He is toally implying that Detroit is suffering from fat cat syndrome and that Chicago is a young junkyard cat looking to make it big.

To those who have any wonder about us having cap issues, well....

In front of me is an article that was written by Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune. Allow me to quote an excerpt from this article:

"The Hossa deal is a salary-cap hit of just more than $5 million per season and Tallon said it doesn't jeopardize the future of core players Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, and Duncan Keith, who will be up for new contracts following the 2009-10 season.

'We took that into consideration,' Tallon said. 'The type of contract Marian has agreed to will not influence our core."

I'm sure it's also on their website too.

We all believe he said that, but face it bro, unless he does manage to unload the overpaid guys (Campbell / Huet) and signs the three core guys, they'll still lack any depth. Chicago's depth is what made the team such a threat.

After all six guys are signed, it will be about 36-38 million cap hit (if Tallon can get them to sign for way under their market value @ long term contracts), then he'll have only about about 17 to 19 million for the other 17 roster players.

Tallon can say this stuff till he's blue in the face or till his eyes turn brown from being full of s***, it still doesn't change the crisis in Chicago.

Ok. Well, suppose the Wings were the one's in this situation and not the Hawks. Would you believe Holland if he said what Tallon said? I am going to believe my GM. Sorry.

We'd be PISSED if Holland put us in that situation! We would call him out to be fired and question his loyalty to the team. We'd also question if it's his last push before retiring or Illich selling out.... But we would never expect Holland to put the Red Wings is such a s***ty situation, he's too savvy for that.

This. If Holland had more than 70% of our cap locked up in a small number of players, I would be calling for his head.

I'm not asking you to expect it. What I asked you is IF he was in this situation, and he said what Tallon said, would YOU believe him?

The answer is no. We already went through this, Holland attempted to sign Hossa at 4 million for 10 years, but many of us here deemed that to not being practical. Why? because 1) it means we'll lose our depth and it wasn't worth it, and 2) it was a lowball offer that we all knew Hossa would never agree to.

Lastly, we would be PISSED if Holland signed someone at Hossa's age and bad playoff performance, all while costing us our future and competitiveness.

I understand you want to believe your GM. That's fine, but work the basic numbers and do the simple math yourself, it's not rocket science. Chi-town has 2 choices, (hopefully) sign those three guys next year and have absolutely no room for depth players (be a 1 and half line team for many years) ... or let a couple of the Kane's, Toews' or Keith's go and have funds to employ some depth / key guys.

Don't be foolish and think those guys are going to sign for 3.5 - 4.5 million.

*Sigh* I guess it is a matter of be careful what you wish for. When Campbell was dealt to San Jose, I was pissed. Little did I know how much him coming here would cause so much havoc.

I think you and I both agree the cap sucks. We lost a solid defenseman named Kyle Quincey last year on waivers because of the cap/Hossa situation. We know how bad it sucks.

You're going to trust Dale Tallon? Don't hold your breath.

The Hawks brass are morons until further notice: when the KTK thing is sorted out.

Anytime you can take a great player from a division rival... its a *good* move.

That being said, the Wings should offersheet Ryane Clowe...

I'd love Clowe. But you'd have to think San Jose would be able to match any offer we'd be able to make in our cap situation

At least it would keep them honest... and not keep Clowe for cheap.

It works out this way:

Tallon explores trading Huet and Campbell as the season goes along. Huet trade is based on Crawford's progress. If Crawford is performing very well, then there is no need to try and get a goaltender in return for Huet. However, Huet for Theodore might be a deal Washington would look at...dump Theo's salary for only a minor increase and a goalie they know will play well. Chicago, OTOH, gets a goalie who can play mediocre to well, and whose overinflated contract ends after the season.

Or how about this trade? Cristobal Huet and Brian Campbell to NYI for Rick DiPietro. NYI would be basically at the cap floor at that point, with 12 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Sign one more forward for $1.5m-$2m and that's a decent roster, definite improvement over last year. Chicago would be a couple million short of the cap floor with a few players to sign. Far from cap trouble this year or going forward.

THEODORE? Is this a joke? He's not the MVP goalie he was back in the day. Sure, he has won playoff series unlike Huet. But if you think Theodore isn't washed up, he was stomped on by the Rangers! The team that couldn't muster up goals. Varlamov may have got whooped in game 7 of the semi's, but he makes brilliant saves, is very young, and Boudreau and Mcphee would be nuts to go with Theodore and show Simeon the door.

Wow. I am appauled at some of the replies that I have seen since I last posted here....

Drugs and Alcohol? How degrading! I have never tried either in my life, and I think it was very unprofessional of you to go there.

unprofessional? this is a freaking message board

and it's "appalled" - unless your parents spelled Paul really weirdly and you really are Appaul.

what is with Hossa's affair with Kopecky? why did he demand that kid came with him....very glad to see him go frankly.

I think it's Kopy that has the affair with Hossa. Chicago management apparently gave Kopy three minutes to decide whether or not he wanted to sign and he obviously did it.
