Who do we target now?

I don't think the Wings necessarily go after anyone. There isn't really much left on the market that I think is a Wings caliber player that we could get for the money (1.5 million). That being said I think this could be like the first year after the lockout. I think spot #11 goes to Abdelkader now for sure. And I think that on top of that you will see guys invited to training camp to fight with prospects (like Oulahen) for the 12th forward. Who knows maybe we find another guy like Cleary by doing that. Then you take the 1.5 million in cap space that is saved by not signing somebody and use it at the trade deadline where you can acquire a 4-5 million dollar player instead of a 1.5 million dollar player (for the whole year), making the Wings a stronger team for the playoffs, which is where it matters most.

Why wait til the deadline to make the trade. Prices are high at the deadline and holland has said he's going to make a deal for a defenceman after camp. Trade for a decent scoring forward then if you really want it but i dont think the wings need more goalscorers anyways

If we resigned Hudler, I may have agreed with you. I think we would have had a pretty solid roster at least to start the season. However, Hudler threw a bit of a changeup at Kenny's plans. We now have another roster spot we need to fill, and he may not feel comfortable throwing someone like Oulahan in the mix right away. We have a little extra cap room to work with now, and we may be in a better position to go out and bring in a cheap depth scorer or a grinding style 3rd liner.

As far as the whole Cleary/camp-tryout thing: People aren't realizing how rare someone like Cleary was to come out of a situation like that. Every team brings in about 5-6 guys on a tryout basis. It's not common for any of those guys to even MAKE an NHL roster, none the less having the sort of impact that Cleary has had.

Tanguay Sykora and Williams... For offensive help the only names I can come up with... And Sykora is the only one who I could see signing for what the Wings have to offer... Sykora likes to play for playoff teams...

Boy there are some retreads out there that were big scorers at on time like Parrish and Bonk, but most of that group have done nothing in like 3 years+...

No it isnt. The Wings aren't going to replace Hudler with the money they have available and anybody left on the market. They could afford to use the rest of their cap on a Moen-Pyatt type, but they don't score many goals. If they go in to camp as is they have 1.5 million in cap space to trade for a player that is worth 4-5 million dollars (annual salary) around the deadline, who will contribute much more come playoff time. The team as is is good enough to be top 4 in the Western Conference, what good does #1 in the West get you, home ice throughout the playoffs, thats it.

But #4 seed and a strong scoring Winger acquired at the deadline can get you further in the playoffs then a 1.5 million dollar player for the whole year.

Filppula-Datsyuk-Franzen

Cleary-Zetterberg-Leino

Abdelkader-Helm-Homer

Malts-Draper-Meech/Oulahen/other internal option

That is not a bad team, and its much better then most other teams have in the league.

Tanguay-Too Pricy

Sykora-May be too Pricy/might not want to play here after being a pen

Williams-I'd rather die then have him back, there is a reason they traded him.

Lets get this dude on skates!

Hell yeh.

Holmstrom-Datsyuk-Zetterberg

Franzen-Filppula-Leino

Abdelkader-Helm-Cleary

Malts-Draper-VINCE

f*** yeh. That would win Stanley Cup right there. Vince is a real grinder. You saw how he grinded those vegies. Lets do the slap chop right there...lets do the slap chop right there...

I really dislike the idea of saving up for a big trade deadline deal -- maybe a plugger, but not a big name.

Draft picks are at a premium nowadays and I hate to see them go out the door.

Sign someone instead, at the beginning of the season, and let them mesh with the team and figure the correct line configurations throughout the course of the year. No assets traded away on a rental that way.

Trade Lebda either for draft picks or for a winger.

done.

That said, I like Mike Greer. Though he isn't a big scorer, he's one of the few San Jose guys that actually shows up in the playoffs. He'd be a good replacement for Kopy because he is a gritty 4th line guy. Last year he had 10 goals in 62 games. Kopy had 6 goals in 79 games. Plus he's from Detroit so I'm thinking that he might be motivated. And he's 6-1, 225 so the LGW posters will like him. 1.8Mil last year.
