mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 No doubt. He initially signed for exactly the same with NY as what Holland was offering -- $4m. Yeah you're right I think. Either way, yeah I'd take him in a heart beat at 800k. Far better than Jason Williams at $2.5M I think IM gonna vomit
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 The team needs an offensive player first and foremost -- and then a grinder so Abdelkader can hopefully spend another year in GR.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 With the departure of some of our 2nd pp unit guys - Shanny would get alot of opportunity with Filppula setting him up to shoot the puck (something he was never afraid to do)...I honestly think he'd get 20 plus with 3rd line/2nd pp ice time. Oh yeah I think that's possible. I was just implying that 10-12 would absolutely happen. ANythign beyond that would be a bonus for that money in my eyes. My point was that at 800k if he potted 10-12 he'd be well worth the going rate in cash in this league today. If he potted closer to 20, which a lot of ppl think he can, he would be an absolute steal at 800k. That's why I say I would gladly sign him if he wanted to play in Detroit again for 800k. Hell, I'd probably even give him $1M with the current Jason Williams $2.5M rumor floating around
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 He's better than Jason f-ing Williams. And he should retire a wing. 20 goals isn't out of reach even at his age. I do NOT think he will play here again tho as long as he still wants to stay out east. And I don't blame him. Beyond that, bring him.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 yeah, of course this whole conversation is based on the assumption he would even want to come here and play. If the Wings dropped Abdelkader to GR and traded Lebda they would have nearly $3.2M to use on some FA. You could easily sign Shanahan at 800k and then use say $2M for another player and be comfortable with 400k of cap space. Or any combination there in
Hankanator 0 Report post Posted July 29, 2009 What the hell are you talking about? Shanny score 40 goals and was a +29 the last year he was here. You should do your homework before you post. And no I don't want him back. He IS a shell of his former self NOW. Homework? I watched every game that season and he displayed no chemistry with anyone on the team. He played all season on a line with Datsyuk and Draper and it was terrible. Shanahan was pretty much useless in the playoffs after 2002. Fans need to stop hanging onto the past. We're going to have a 37 year old, past his prime Franzen one day and people will be saying "Remember 2008!".
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 No doubt. He initially signed for exactly the same with NY as what Holland was offering -- $4m. The reason he left was that he felt he was too much a part of the past, and I think that mindset would keep him from coming back here again.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) All of this assumes Shanahan's desire to move back to Detroit and play for a pittance, when he is at present quite established in NYC. Naturally, people here also continue to assume that he's capable of production. Last season and the season prior to that somewhat disprove that notion, especially given that he was playing on the top two lines in the '07-'08 season. 20+ goals? Not happening. 10-15? Maybe. He's also jelly defensively. And he has nowhere near the know-how and ability to play point on the power play. He'd not have been able to effectively do that even back in his prime. Some people let nostalgia get the better of them. Two seasons ago it was Lapointe. As we all, know, he was garbage in the '06-'07 season and he continued to slide into obscurity during the two seasons after that. Then it was always Fedorov. Skilled, but there were others players out there of his caliber, and he wasn't interested in returning to play for the Wings anyhow. And yadda yadda yadda. Also interesting to me is the "we need another Drake" idea around here. While Drake was a decent piece of the playoff run, he was by no means vital. There is no special "add to mix to win Cup" component. He just happened to be the only move in an otherwise-silent offseason by the front office. He accomplished little in the regular season, and he wasn't vital in the playoffs. He helped, but he wasn't vital. The top three lines and the defense were vital. The 4th line was not so much so. Anyway, I think people let nostalgia and gimmicks override their better judgment at times. And in any event, the OP's comparison lacks any substance to begin with; as others have noted, Drake was putting forth his all to win the Cup in what very may well have been his last season in the league regardless of outcome, whereas Shanahan has won three cups, is possessed of questionable motivation, and does not have the drive he once had. If anyone can open up a portal to the past and bring in the '97 Shanahan, then please do so. However, be warned that you will risk significantly disrupting the space-time continuum. Without Shanahan on the '97, '98 and '02 teams, Cups may not have been won in those seasons. Also, the presence of two simultaneous Shanahans in the present may cause some issues for the league. And, (haha), there'd also be no guarantee that he'd want to play for the current Wings team! Edited July 30, 2009 by Crymson
cjm502 165 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 For league minimum Shanny is a bargain. That leaves us around $1.7m which is enough for Malhotra or Grier. Shanny is very capable of putting up 40+ points still. My list: 1.) Malhotra 2.) Shanny 3.) Grier 4.) Prospal 5.) Williams
