The FINAL ROSTER is SET...lines?

Rate this topic

u really think that leinos a 2nd line player? u really think that we're going to put homer on the 4th line? u might need to be re-introduced to reality, friend.

I hate to say it, but Homer looked like crap since he came off the IR last season. He looked even slower than usual (and we all know Homer was never a speed demon) and even in front of the net he looked just a little off. Maybe he was just rusty from the injury. I sure hope so. Because part of me is starting to think Homer might be hitting the wall. Whether it's from age or injury, Homer may not be top line material anymore...

Dream on.

This lineup actually makes the 2006 Wings look physicaly imposing. Having 2 sissies like Williams and Eaves playing on what is usually known as a checking line isn't going to look good, since neither of those players can actually "check".

Defense is this team's only supposed strength, and it's still a big question mark because of last year's breakdowns on defense.

Damn, you did it again...

Datsyuk and zetterberg barely played together in the season last year. It always seems like babcock would rather split them up to create two deadly lines instead of just the one (even though the top two line will be deadly no matter what). Hank and franzen always play good together, and so does cleary when he plays with both of them. Holmstrom needs datsyuk, he would be extremely unproductive on the 4th line with draper and maltby so that will not happen. I dont thik leino has proven himself as a 2nd line player yet, although he had some good games when he was on the wings... Heres my take on the line...

cleary-zetterberg-franzen

holmstrom-datsyuk-filpula

williams-helm-leino

maltby-draper-eaves

also, is anybody a little nervous about the osgood/howard combo... Osgood is good but if he starts at all like he did last year and doesn't have somebody like conklin to back him up, it could get ugly.... I keep thinking about that game against Minnesota last hear where howard played terrible...

Something I guess I just don't understand is this.

Why is it that everyone is automatically giving a third line spot to Helm, a guy who has proven nothing but the fact that he is willing to hit and grind, and that he is a very fast player, but a guy who also is lacking in any kind of offensive skills when compared to anyone competing for time on the first three lines as well as perhaps McGrath, Abdelkader, Ritola, Oulahen, Jeremy Williams, Dick Axelsson, and more Wings depth forwards who will be in Grand Rapids.

I like Helm. I really do. But the Wings the past few years have typically liked their first three lines to be lines that play both ends of the ice fairly well with a strong checking line that brought some speed. With the players currently signed, I see this lineup formed from that philosophy and past line usage:

Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom

Franzen/Filppula/Leino

Cleary/Williams/Eaves

Maltby/Draper/Helm

Oulahen/McGrath

Yes, I expect Helm on the fourth line, as well as both Oulahen and McGrath as extra forwards to begin the year due to their waiver status. The reason for Eaves on the third line is because Eaves has proven he can be an effective offensive player in the NHL when used in a secondary offensive role and has a career average of 15 goals and 30 assists per 80 games, while Helm's only performance in the NHL on any line has been as an energy player and grinder. No matter who he has played with, Helm has not really shown any kind of offensive capability at the NHL level. So put Eaves with Cleary and Williams, two solid defensive forwards flanking an offensive forward who tends to be more irresponsible defensively, and you have a third line that fits the two-way description that the Wings like as it is overall good defensively as well as could potentially produce 60+ goals. Overall, I could see the Wings as a team producing between 275-290 goals, which is a solid number as we will probably see better defense from the team and better goaltending from Osgood.

if u want helm on the 4th line...

Leino-Zetterberg-Franzen

Williams-Datsyuk-Cleary

Eaves-Filppula-Holmstrom

Draper-Helm-Maltby

4 great centers. 3 great net presences (maltby, no). 3 great secondary scorers (draper, no). There could be a lot of combinations using this formula, right?

Put Homer with Draper and Maltby and you take away any chance of Homer being at all productive and any chance of the 4th line being at all valuable.

Homer's game has always relied on his having play makers to feed him, even more so now. Draper and Maltby need someone solid to help them out.

Personally, I'm hoping for one more grinder to get signed. There's no way that all three of those guys will play a full season...most likely none of them will, and we're certain to have other injuries. Meech obviously can't back up everyone and I think everyone besides JAbs who is even close to NHL caliber has to clear waivers both up and down. I don't think we'll want to expose anyone to recall waivers since we'd then have to eat half their cap hit. Don't know that we want to add another rookie like Oulahen or McGrath to a full time spot...

We have cap space, epecially if Lilly goes on LTIR. Kyle Calder and Boyd Devereaux are both still available.

Basically, what I was thinking, except some of the wingers on your lines are on the wrong sides.

1) i dont think that pav and flip would work well together...they're our best two distributors.

2) helm, draper, maltby...is that a productive 4th line.

Were you a red wing fan before they won the cup? The Holmstrom, datsyuk/filppula line was put together alot in the past, and they played awesome together. Problem is filppula plays his best at center, he needs to center his own line to thrive like everyone wants him too.. Pavs is the best player in the league at which ever position he plays.. so re-unite him with his boy Z.

Cleary,Z/Pavs

Franzen/Filppula/Williams

Leino/Helm/Eaves

Holmstrom/Draper/Maltby

Only problem about these threads is i guarantee you, you will rarely see a 100% lineup for more than 10-15 games.. Lines are always going to be changing depending on whos in and whos out... Only in the playoffs i think its fair to predict lines, because players will play through injuries.. In the reg season though if Zetterberg has something minor like a sore back on a west coast road trip against the L.A kings, babcock probably will see no real logic in playing him, and this will go for just about everyone else..

Players who are more than likely to play 80+ games are players like helm, eaves, and leino.. for the reason, their young players who don't see the minutes other players do.

If you want those two together...

take a look at our FINAL playoff lines last season:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary

Franzen-Filppula-HOSSA

Holmstrom-Helm-SAMUELSSON

HUDLER-Draper-Maltby

so, hows about these lines next season:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary

Franzen-Filppula-WILLIAMS

Holmstrom-Helm-EAVES

LEINO-Draper-Maltby

williams replaces hossa; eaves replaces samuelsson; and leino replaces hudler.

i know that a lot of people have high expectations for leino, but lets wait and see...

Our 4th line is going to be bad, no matter who's on it. I'd rather it be Holmstrom with Draper and Maltby to give the others a chance to prove themselves, we know what we're getting in those three. I cant believe I'd ever get to the point that having them is really hurting the Wings from being a tough team, they take up cap space and room on the roster for more effective players, it wouldnt be so bad if they provided some offence, but they just dont.
