hockey23 79 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 Kenny said he wanted to go with 7 d and 13 forwards and wanted competition. He also mentioned Justin Abdelkader (or as my friend calls him, Tampon Applicator) would probably start in GR. He added that they would be over the cap going into camp and are still in the market for one more guy. So, who's left. We have 560,000 in cap space and if Meech was the odd guy out, it would leave us with a little over $1 mil. Are there any decent grinders for this price range? cjm502 165 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 (edited) I went through about 25 free agents yesterday and there was a few from what I saw. I dont remember their names, but if Kenny really wanted to make the move the choices are still there. EDIT: Right now it looks like Meech will be out 13th forward and our 7th dman. We do not have to many options at this point, I would be THRILLED if Abby replaced Maltby, but he is better off playing more mins with the Griffins until next year. The article on Mlive made it pretty clear that Holland wanted a 22 man roster. I highly doubt Meech with be the 7th/13th.
Vladiator 116 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 Couldn't imagine another signing. Kenny is leaving a little bit of cap room for the trade deadline. Not happy with the roster going into this season, but we all could be surprised.

hockey23 79 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 I don't see us signing anyone else honestly. Trust me, I'd LOVE one actual grinder (Grier) but I don't see it happening. from Mlive Again, the Wings aren't done shopping with the $500,000 or so in cap space they'd have if they placed Abdelkader in Grand Rapids (more if Andreas Lilja begins the season on the long-term injured reserve list), but Holland made it very clear that he wants to carry seven defensemen, not eight, and that eventually makes Derek Meech or Brett Lebda's time in Detroit limited at best: "We're still talking to a couple of people," Holland said. "We're a little unknown (on the salary cap number). We might go into camp a little over capped because we don't know about (Andreas) Lilja's health. In the short term, we have a couple players in Helm and Abdelkader who can go up and down. Helm's an NHL player for sure. In Abby's case, it's what's best for Justin." ... "Ideally, we want to carry 13 forwards and seven defencemen," Holland said.

cjm502 165 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 The article on Mlive made it pretty clear that Holland wanted a 22 man roster. I highly doubt Meech with be the 7th/13th. Doing the simple math...7 defensemen plus 2 goalies plus 13 forwards equals 22 players, leaving the Red Wings, once everything shakes out, with another forward to sign. In terms of the remaining free agents out there, who are you interested in as a 13th forward who could both push Kirk Maltby and Darren Helm for ice time and add a little bit of snarl to the Wings' roster? Yes, I very obviously read that also. Currently we are over the cap though. When we send Abby down we will have about half a mil. Can we carry 2 players with half a mil? No we cannot, this is why I assume Meech will be the 13th, and 7th.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 (edited) Mark Bell? http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockey...player.cgi?1631 Is it not all that possible? Why not? Oh it's possible, and I hope to god it happens. I'm just not expecting it, but it's the perfect situation. Big body, drafted high, couple 20 goal years, had a couple problems, spent a year in the AHL, give him Babs and a training camp and I'd imagine he'd be back on track (Much the same as I expect from Eaves) Edited August 8, 2009 by Detroit # 1 Fan

Sending Abby down would leave 12 forwards and 8 d. That means one d would have to go (or Lilja to LTIR) which would free up more space. Now we would have $1 mil to $1.75 mil depending on which d man goes to sign 1 forward for the 13th spot.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 It said his salary was $2.5m. Is it just me or is he being over-paid? Haha, San Jose gave him that money when they acquired him from Chicago some years ago. It was pretty much the reason he was in the minors last year, no one could afford to take on a player like Bell for that much. (Not to say he cant be worth it again some day )

But I don't know. If he's back on the straight and narrow as Kenny likes to say, why not give him a shot or invite him to camp at least?

If he's back on the straight and narrow as Kenny likes to say, why not give him a shot or invite him to camp at least? Kenny usually picks out a couple of guys and invites them to camp (Cleary, LaCouture in 05; Downs, Sopel and Cullimore in 08) So I'd say if there's any chance for Bell to come here it'll be as a training camp invitee. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I was confused with the wings current situation. I thought those numbers were with Lilja factored out. NOW it seems pretty damn reasonable. The real question I have now is does he have any interest in playing here? On the surface I'm thinking why not? Detroit's reputation and pedigree speaks for itself. However, the Wings don't really have any players that play his kind of physical style. In terms of on ice chemistry he'll have Darren Helm to relate to. Maybe he doesn't want to play on that kind of team. In the end though, I figure that if someone on LGW is aware of someone's free agent status then someone on Kenny's staff has to be aware of it too. We shall see.

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted August 8, 2009 when they announced downey would not be returning i became reasonably sure the wings would just stick with their pussified goal scoring style of play, which, to be fair, has worked quite well.
