Sabres sign Grier

He's a big body that can skate, hit, handle the puck and fight. He could play on any of our 4 lines and fit in just fine. It's just frustrating!

Any of our 4 lines?

Come on, esteef, don't exaggerate.

To my critics and followers of my every post:

A) I DO support the Red Wings; as a former season ticket holder, regular attendee (and frequenter of the $9 beer stand), many Flint Generals and Grand Rapids games, and occasionally if my waistline permits I indeed partake in a large pepperoni, mushroom, & sausage pizza from.... Little Caesars.

B) This thread wasn't the 'goon' thread. This was the Mike Grier thread. We are paying Williams, who will serve little purpose on our team besides another 30 point scorer (we have that in GR), the relative same amount of money as Mr. Grier, our Detroit native. (Don't give me the 'he really wanted to go to Buffalo BS- Holland didn't pursue him, period.)

C) For those that question the rinks capacity and tendencies for the 2009/10 year to be full are kidding themselves. Detroit is a Blue Collar City that respects and enjoys a blue collar worker. Jason Williams is the antithesis of that, he's an under-talented version of Robert Lang. Fans want value for their buck, watching Pavel Datsyuk do a 'pretty' move is great, but not when that happens without grit, tenacity, and work ethic of the other players on the team.

There's no secret that these forums lean highly to the softer euro-side of hockey. That's fine, but remember the acronym of our beloved League. NHL, not KHL.

Also, Mindfly, I wasn't going to dignify your post with a response- but I will say, it was funny and written very schizophrenically as many of your posts seem to portray.

Good Day! P.s. Anyone else find it ironic that Rick Porcello would be our best enforcer on the Red Wings?

Congratulations Detroit Red Wings, you have officially let every decent free agent for 2009-10 season that would offer an entertainment value, beyond Disney on Ice, to sign with other teams at bargain prices.

Oh wait, Ken Holland DID sign an enforcer for our 4th line... Welcome Mr. Jason Williams.

What a joke 2009-10 will be.

MARK MY WORDS... WATCH HOW EMPTY THE REGULAR SEASON WILL BE IN DETROIT THIS YEAR....

Don't watch then or better yet you should probably submit your resume to the NHL since you clearly have all the answers over that idiot Ken Holland.

Talk about spoiled.

I would have prefered one scorer and one grinder -- is Eaves our grinder? Would have been nice to have someone with more size.

Ah well -- Holland had a tough job this off-season, no question, and he fell well short of his traditional excellence in my opinion.

really? He locked up both Franzen and Z for their entire careers at cap friendly numbers.

We spent all season debating about Franzen and Z and Hossa. We knew we coudn't keep all. Hossa proved to be a playoff no show and Kenny went out and locked up the two that will help most in the playoffs.

We lost Mr. regular season, Sammy and a useless Kopy. The only surprise was to lose Huds to the Russians- something nobody could forsee.

So Kenny turns around and signs Williams at a discount - 1M less than he made last year and only to a 1 year contract and Patrick Eaves for not much more than the league minimum also for 1 year.

I think that he did pretty well considering the cap.

I'm glad people on this board have a good sense of humor.

I'm not disagreeing - though with Holland's record "pretty well" is actually disappointing.

What offseasons in your opinion were better?

I gotta say that last offseason was pretty spectacular (or we thought it was) when he signed Hossa. Turns out his one year of playoff sucess was only because he was plying wing to Crosby. Even Bill Guerin looks good playing with Crosby....

You really can't compare an offseason with a cap to ones that came before the cap.

That 2001 offseason was pretty sweet, wasn't it? :D

Mr. Grier, our Detroit native.

It should be noted that he was raised in Boston, however.

Remember that he did sign Franzen during the season -- this was before anybody had any inkling of Hossa's impending struggles. He signed the first guy he could come to terms with, and thank goodness that was Franzen.

Mike Grier on the first line?....hahahahah. We could put him up there with Pavs

hahahhah.

He only scored 10 goals last year but he would fit just fine on the 1st line?

How many did Homer score? Hahahahaha

Are you kidding!?

Grier had 10 goals in 62 games. Holmstrom had 14 in 53. So first off, Holmstrom was in fact a better goal scoring threat.

But even moving past that...

Grier has broken 20 goals twice, the most recent being 2000-2001. In fact, those two times "breaking" 20 goals, were in fact 20 goals bang on.

Holmstrom has, since the 2000-2001 season broken 20 goals four times, with one of those being 29 goals and another being 30 goals.

Holmstrom has been a better offensive player and put up his numbers more recently.

...Grier is a more physical Maltby.

Yah, Holmstrom had a bit of an off year. And guess what? He was still better than Grier. Give him a chance, he'll rebound (at least somewhat).

Grier can do everything Homer can do and more. I bet his stats would look pretty good too if he played top line minutes (including PP) with Zetts and Dats. Who wouldn't?

I love Homer, but it ain't like he's doing something that other players can't do.
