McKeen's NHL Yearbook Red Wings Predictions

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I picked up a copy of McKeen's new 09-10 NHL Yearbook today, and I figured some of you might be interested in the predictions they've made for our team and its players this year. In case you aren't familiar with McKeen's, in my opinion, it's the best annual pooler's guide available.

Here goes nothing:

Central Division Standings

Chicago Blackhawks (106 points)

Detroit Red Wings (102 points)

Columbus Blue Jackets (94 points)

St. Louis Blues (91 points)

Nashville Predators (85 points)

Individual Player Stats:

Pavel Datsyuk - 82GP 34G 66A 100P

Henrik Zetterberg - 77GP 35G 53A 88P

Johan Franzen - 76GP 38G 26A 64P

Nicklas Lidstrom - 75GP 13G 48A 61P

Valtteri Filppula - 80GP 20G 38A 58P

Brian Rafalski - 76GP 9G 47A 56P

Dan Cleary - 72GP 18A 30G 48P

Niklas Kronwall - 78GP 12G 35A 47P

Tomas Holmstrom - 60GP 18G 24A 42P

Jason Williams - 72GP 15G 19A 34P

Darren Helm - 68GP 14G 13A 27P

Ville Leino - 55GP 11G 14A 25P

Jonathan Ericsson - 4G 18A 22P

Brett Lebda - 75GP 5G 15A 20P

Brad Stuart - 70GP 3G 16A 19P

Kris Draper - 69GP 5G 11A 16P

That's all they have listed in the top 475 projected players. Also, I can't seem to find Bertuzzi anywhere in the book. Maybe I'm just missing something, but it looks like it was printed before he had signed with the Wings. With that said, it was also printed before the likes of Tanguay and Prospal signed, and I found their projected numbers as UFAs, so I don't know what's up with Bert.

If there's anything else anyone is interested in, feel free to ask.

I hope that list is pretty inaccurate.

I'm hoping Leino puts up around 40 pts.

Looks like everybody is riding Chicago pretty hard. Hope those kids don't buckle under the pressure.

I hope they do.

Don't think its too realistic that Cleary will score 30 goals. I'm thinking 20.

My mistake. It's supposed to be 18G 30A for 48P. I mixed up the numbers.

Where is Malts?

And where is Eaves?

There are only 10 forwards!

They only project the top 475 scorers, and they obviously didn't think Maltby or Eaves would make the cut. The players listed are the players they project numbers for.

Where can i get this book??

Good question. It's on newsstands everywhere in my area, but I live near Toronto, so I don't know how easy it is to find in Michigan. Here's the website, which may be able to give you more information:

Well we know they're not capable of beating the Wings in a playoff series. They've added Hossa but lost the Bulin Wall. I guess they can win the Cup...unless they face the Wings in the playoffs.

Leino will have way more than 25 points. I don't think its a huge stretch to expect numbers similar to Hudler's last season, 20-25 goals, 50+ points.

I'm also hoping that Z gets back on track after underachieving a bit last season, same with Filppula.

who do they have winning the other divisions?

Here are the complete standings by conference:

Eastern Conference

1. Washington Capitals (108 points)

2. Philadelphia Flyers (104 points)

3. Boston Bruins (99 points)

4. Pittsburgh Penguins (102 points)

5. New Jersey Devils (95 points)

6. Montreal Canadiens (95 points)

7. Carolina Hurricanes (94 points)

8. Atlanta Thrashers (94 points)

9. Buffalo Sabres (93 points)

10. New York Rangers (92 points)

11. Ottawa Senators (87 points)

12. Toronto Maple Leafs (87 points)

13. Florida Panthers (85 points)

14. Tampa Bay Lightning (75 points)

15. New York Islanders (68 points)

Western Conference

1. Chicago Blackhawks (106 points)

2. San Jose Sharks (100 points)

3. Calgary Flames (98 points)

4. Detroit Red Wings (102 points)

5. Anaheim Ducks (96 points)

6. Vancouver Canucks (95 points)

7. Columbus Blue Jackets (94 points)

8. Edmonton Oilers (92 points)

9. St. Louis Blues (91 points)

10. Minnesota Wild (91 points)

11. Dallas Stars (88 points)

12. Los Angeles Kings (88 points)

13. Nashville Predators (85 points)

14. Phoenix Coyotes (84 points)

15. Colorado Avalanche (62 points)

The only thing that really strikes me as odd is the Thrashers slipping into the playoffs with 94 points. That isn't to say it's entirely out of the question, but I'd be much more inclined to think the likes of Buffalo, New York, Ottawa, or even Tampa Bay would be able to power past Atlanta.

Anything else?

I would bet major money on either Toronto or Ottawa making the play-offs. Especially Ottawa if LeClaire plays decent. Kovalev, Heatley, Spezza and Alfredson? Ottawa has a very impressive top 6 forwards. Toronto looks like a perfect 8th seed, could be built to steal and grind a lot of games into overtime.

I would also put a lot of money on Dallas at least making the play-offs. Last season Turko played horribly, they lost a 7+ million dollar player and Brunnstrum was adjusting slowly. He was having an Osgood type regular season without the man-power upfront to save his ass.

I do however agree with all the top 4 seeds in each conference. If you think Detroit looked lazy and tired last season, imagine what they'll be like this season. They'll blow a healthy number of leads and probably won't be too concerned if they lose the division.

They are on par if not worse than the Red Wings.

They lost the Bulin Wall, and have Huet in net now. Brutal.

While it is true that they added Hossa, they lost Martin Havlat, who is just as good as Hossa, and even better

in the playoffs.

I say Wings with 106 points, Hawks with 99.

im still soo baffled that everyone considers chicago to be so high. Is it because of their playoff performance (against 2 teams that really should have beat them)? Or is it because of the off season moves? As others pointed out, hossa and havlat are essentially interchangable. Hossa will score more than havlat, but being that he is injured for the start of the season, the signing is basically the same as keeping havlat.

Their other signings? An old tired veteran (which they DID need some veteran leadership) and tomas kopecky... and we know how good HE is. Also they lost their veteran cup winning goalie, and have the likes of Huet and Corey Crawford between the pipes. Lest we forget the added stress of a parody for an offseason and the upcoming offseason which will see some of chicagos core players walk. Also with chicago, at some point throughout the season i think we can expect to see some drastic firing of the coaching staff or management.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again, there is NO way chicago finished ahead of detroit this year.

I'm liking the positivity I'm reading about the Leafs on here -- I certainly hope they appear in the playoffs. I'd prefer them as an eighth seed myself. That being said...I don't know, I can see it being one more year in Toronto before they go.

I don't know how I feel about the Chicago-Detroit thing. I don't think you guys lost all that much to make a significant difference -- assuming your regular season goalminding is more consistent. But Chicago has to fit in some new pieces and hope Huet can be real good, as they tend to give up lots of goals.

I don't think San Jose will do as well either. They all but walked to the President's Trophy last season, but they faced Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Anaheim the most -- and Anaheim was only good at the end of the season. That's an easy way to inflate points, and all those teams (except Phoenix) should be improved this season.

I can see Philly beating out the Pens. Philly is in fact the team to watch in the East, I think. Although I do agree with Washington being the top seed.

This is a pretty good predictive list.

Agreed.

Burke has a rep for building tuff teams whom squeek into the playoffs, and upset a higher seeded rival...Me thinks the Leafs will do that this year.

Dont get me wrong, the Leafs will be great defensively this year and probably have above average goaltending.. But how do you expect them to win games without an offensive threat?
