CenterIce 83 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 This is sort of unclear. Does this mean he will just be listed as injuried, or will he be listed on long term IR? I am guessing it means long term IR.
T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 Another important point here is: Also Sunday, coach Mike Babcock said Jason Williams will join Niklas Kronwall on the point for the second power-play unit.

Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 Also Sunday, coach Mike Babcock said Jason Williams will join Niklas Kronwall on the point for the second power-play unit. Regrettable, but a foregone conclusion with his signing.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 Two pieces of bad news. We lose our enforcer and our dignity on the PP. Sammy was better on the point than Williams.
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 Another important point here is: We knew Williams would be there. That is the main reason he was signed. Right shot on the point. They really love that.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 At least Williams can aim.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 13, 2009 At least Williams can aim. He's a turnover machine. And he doesn't provide as much entertainment on the point that Sammy had with those bizarre spin moves and odd shot choices.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted September 14, 2009 At least Williams can aim. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Williams is like Sammy-light. As much as he infuriated me with shot selection, Sammy was much harder to knock of the puck because of his size, had a heavy shot (when it wasn't aimed at the goalie's chest), and played with edge. Unless he's changed remarkably in his time away from the Wings, Williams brings none of those things, and is becoming injury prone.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 14, 2009 (edited) About the only player that could make me miss Sammy is Jason Williams. Big E should be on the second power play unit. Edited September 14, 2009 by GoWings1905

stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted September 14, 2009 ugh... I know Babs loves the R and L combo on the point, but with Stuart and Ericsson, there's no excuse for not having one of them back there... and to who said Sammy was better, come on... lets not have revisionist history here - as an overall player, I think Sammy is a slight upgrade from Williams, but Williams is FAR better on the point than Sammy was, better aim, better puck control and could keep the puck in the zone better... Sammy's puck control was way better. That guy would do the stupidest moves, especially that backhanded move, and would still hold on to the puck against all odds. The problem occured when he tried to pass it off or dump it into the boards, which is when we always lost possession. In Williams' case, he's more prone to turn it over right at that point, which will lead to breakaways.

In Williams' case, he's more prone to turn it over right at that point, which will lead to breakaways. Sammy was just a void on the ice where plays went to die -- always holding onto it for too long -- it was hilarious (when I was not screaming from sheer frustration) watching the Wings complete tic-tac-toe passes until it resulted in Samuelsson on the point, trying to stickhandle and dispy-doodle for 5 straight seconds (going nowhere). Yeah, his puck control was better -- but it was absolutely pointless puck control that resulted in squat. At least Williams was a better passer and able to get the puck away quickly... but also resulting in some quick, deadly turnovers for the other team. With Samuelsson, you could watch the team collectively sigh while he had the puck and start skating back, giving up the play for dead, but at least neutralizing the turnover. Sort of a 'pick your poison' I guess! Oh Sammy~! How I'll miss him!
