NEW YORK -- New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended indefinitely after leaving the bench to start a fight with Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

The NHL announced the suspension Friday. No date for a hearing has been set.

Phaneuf's hit knocked out Islanders forward Kyle Okposo in the second period of the Flames' 5-4 shootout victory Thursday night in an exhibition game.

Morency jumped off the bench and charged Phaneuf, starting a brawl that included New York goalie Martin Biron. Okposo remained motionless for more than six minutes. He was immobilized and removed from the ice on a stretcher.

Morency was assessed a game misconduct penalty.

I think he just lost it. You're right though, after the stupidness was over, it was cool to see Phaneuf get smacked around a little.

it looks like it was a line change to me right as phaneuf hit okposo. When you're Phaneuf and have proven your worth in the league you don't go doing that s*** in preseason against a s***ty teams 2nd est prospect after Tavares. He deserved more of a beat down.

Just for reference, Kyle Okposo is no longer a prospect. He played 65 games last season and 9 games the year before, and is not going back to the minors. He was an Islanders prospect for the 2006-07 season when he played at the University of Minnesota, and the 2007-08 season when he played for Minnesota, and then spent the remainder of the year with Bridgeport of the AHL before joining the Islanders late in the season. He spent all of last season with the Islanders, except for the AHL playoffs which he played 2 games for Bridgeport as the Isles missed the postseason.

I agree. There was 1 or 2 players going to the bench at the same time, and somebody would've went after Phanuef anyway probably so I don't think he should even be suspended.

Didn't Moron-cy come on at the line change? What's suspension-worthy about that?

No, he flew off the bench right after the hit. Take another look at the video and watch the Isles bench. Morency jumps off the bench immediately after the hit.

As far as the hit, Phaneuf does seem to leave his feet on the play, although it looks like he makes contact before he does, so it's not an illegal hit in that sense. Just Phaneuf not being able to throw a hit without falling down.

Hey, you're right!

If I was Moron-cy, I'd be a bit miffed at my teammates. They saw him come off, and it was clear that they were coming in, at least from what he could tell.

He's a victim. He deserves to be reinstated immediately, a small medal or trophy of some sort, and 3 free shots at Phaneuf.

Doc is right. Morency did nothing wrong that I can see - he came off the bench when two guys were coming in, nothing illegal about that. It became illegal when neither of them actually left the ice. Coming off the bench immediately after the hit is not a suspendable offense if it's on a linechange. Had either of the guys who skated toward the bench had the presence of mind to stay there, Morency wouldn't be in trouble.

...I think, anyway.

It's not like Phaneuf's neanderthal face is tough to miss out there...

True. It did look like they were about to, but they didn't. It reminds me of when some dude hit Steve Yzerman and Stu Grimson had his led hanging over the dasher waiting for someone to come to the bench.
