Frolov rumor du-jour: Frolov to Chicago for Versteeg and Cam Barker. What has been holding it up is Chicago wants one of the Kings young D-man, and whomever that D-man is, Lombardi doesn’t want to part with. Don’t shoot the messenger!

CHICAGONOW.COM: Mike Kiley posts a Los Angeles blogger is reporting a rumor that has the LA Kings dealing forward Alexander Frolov to the Chicago Blackhawks for forward Kris Versteeg and defenseman Cam Barker. Kiley doubts the Blackhawks would part with Barker without getting a quality defenseman in return.

Agent Allan Walsh (via his Twitter account) said he's been told the Frolov rumor is "pure fantasy", adding "people should really be questioning "sources" and wonder how this BS gets started."

SPECTOR'S NOTE: I think Walsh's response pretty much says all we need to know about this. I think the basis for the Frolov rumors is his UFA status next summer. If the Kings are out of the playoff race by the March deadline and if his contract talks aren't going anywhere with the Kings I could see Frolov getting shopped but not before then.

Frolov for Versteeg and Barker is a fair deal. If Chicago won't do it without getting a d-man back, they better be prepared to add picks and/or prospects.

I doubt LA is actually looking to deal Frolov, though.

I can't see them giving Versteeg, Kane or Toews away anytime soon...

Kane or Toews could easily gone next season due to cap problems...

I think Toews is the first one signed (and rightly so). Keith should follow. Kane, IMO, should be the odd man out. However, the Hawks have made him their "Face of the Team" and I can see them giving him some obscene contract just to keep him a Hawk. He is one-dimensional and can easily be shut down when the stakes are higher (WCF anyone?)

Personally, I hope Kane scores like crazy this year against everyone but the Wings. His stock will be inflated thus forcing the Hawks hands. Yes, he's RFA, but the Hawks just went through their big develpment phase and I doubt they want to start that again.

The cap hell that the Sharks experienced this off-season is looming large and dark and headed towards the Windy City.

Meanwhile, Wings have retooled and reloaded and have $16M with which to re-sign players and bring in quality UFA's. I think the Wings will be a very appealing team to many a free agent next summer, especially after they hoist another Cup this June.
