GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) On second thought, maybe we should sign May. The guy scores huge playoff goals, which we could have used last year in the Finals. We didn't get many clutch goals against the Pens. Check this one out. Edited September 24, 2009 by GMRwings1983
sureWhyNot 19 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 (edited) May ====== tremendous waste of roster space and money. At least Maltby knows how to skate, who to get the puck to, and has a general idea of where the opponents net is located. The fact May didn't get KO'd here makes me want him on our team all the more: Edited September 24, 2009 by sureWhyNot
sureWhyNot 19 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 I know. But I can see it now. Brad May would be the missing link that so many people think the Wings need after they drop a few games. Instead of "Why don't they bring up Downey?"... it'll be "Why don't they bring up May?". Here's a crazy idea - what if the Wings played someone regularly (like the did Downey 2 years ago)? The games were awesome, the fans and his teamates loved him, and it certainly didn't hurt us W/L wise seeing as though we went on to win the cup (with McCarty dressing in the playoffs too.) Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 I totally agree with these line combos. 4th line is pretty much locked because it would be stupid to drop someone like Williams there. That means all the changes are made between the top three lines and those are so far the only two combos that really make sence. I prefer the A over B because playing Flip in the 3rd seems somehow not right. But then again if it would be Team B how much would the 3rd line play? If Babs decides to play those three lines almost evenly I can still see Flip-Leino reaching big numbers in the 3rd line. edit: By the way, is it 'in' the line or 'on' the line? Babs said recently that his target time to play Dats and Z is 18 mins/game each. In that case the third would play a bit more.
jollymania 162 Report post Posted September 24, 2009 May is our new Downey. Another 'savior'. Lol. *facepalm* Even at his age, May will be a greater asset than Downey ever was. Neither of them are saviors, except for the few people who get off to having fighters on the team.
Guest micah Report post Posted September 24, 2009 For all the doubters of May's other abilities, keep in mind that for a time, Anaheim used him up on the Getzlaf-Perry line. He didn't necessarily scorch up the scoreboard or anything, but he certainly didn't look out of place when he was cycling the puck with them two. If May makes your team, I think your team becomes better in other aspects than just what he contributes. Because May's a type of player who will free up considerable space around others and always stick up for the club. May will fight the biggest guys in the league simply because he knows he's due for it, as evidenced by this fight with Boogaard in Anaheim's first meeting with Minnesota after May clocked their defensemen in the previous postseason. p.s. the point wasn't to win that fight, but merely stay alive...otherwise, he felt he had to give it to him for what he'd done. That was the momment I came to respect the hell out of Brad May, as both a hockey player and a man. He didn't have to fight Boogaard, but he knew he screwed up and he had it coming, so he did. Not all that many players would have done the same. I appreciate a guy who will not only fight when it's right, but who'll take his medicine like a man when he knows he screwed up. The games were awesome, the fans and his teamates loved him, and it certainly didn't hurt us W/L wise seeing as though we went on to win the cup (with McCarty dressing in the playoffs too.) The players that were on the ice were on the ice for a reason. I don't argue 15 years of dominance. The reason Downey never saw the ice last playoffs was because the braintrust didn't think they needed what he offered. Which has always been little more than a 'Rah Rah' attitude and a heavy punch. Super nice guy... no question. But just didn't have the skillset that the Wings covet. Based on skill, I'd say May would be an upgrade.

Was it just a handful of Red Wing fans who voted Downey the player of the game in each of his games?

Dominator2005 558 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 So you're saying that May is a better fighter currently than Souray and Neil? Are you serious??? May is/was (at least) enforcer... Lilja wasn't and never going to be enforcer by NHL standards... Lilja will NEVER FIGHT AGAIN if he makes a comeback...
Dominator2005 558 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 GMR, is your Lilja stuff just Schtick? Seriously, I think it is... a big act. Lilja has never, nor will be an 'ENFORCER' in the NHL. He's a good sized defensemen, who will occasionally fight out of need. Lilja is enforcer (in Red Wings) world...
Zetts 236 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 Regardless of what exact type of player you want to cast May as, he's a gritty, abrasive player, which we're running a little short on. I'm glad to have him.

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 I don't know who the Leafs are dressing tomorrow (they don't announce their lineup until the morning skate), but rest assured, there will be more than one guy for May to drop the mitts with.

Lets see what he can do! We have our regular season defense playing tomorrow, and if I was Ozzy I would want to have a good game after being completely embarrassed last game. I am expecting a win, and a fight!
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 Just because he fights, most people are already harping on him. And we're the biased idiots! Brad May can play hockey, and is good enough to play on our 4th line, at this point in both careeers, May is much more effective then Maltby. Malts doesnt hit hard anymore, May still can. I hopehe makes it with Grand Rapids and impresses and gets some looks, I've always been a huge May fan, never thought we'd be getting him! (Oh and him, Newbury, Bertuzzi, Abs and Ericsson is gonna be sick tommorow!)
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted September 25, 2009 (edited) Give him a try in GR. He would only make it to the NHL squad if there was a series of injuries or if he could provide more dimensions than throwing punches, particularly when there's more than enough grit and talent on the team to push May well down into GR. I can see why they'd go for a possible two-way deal though, given it's always smart to have a fail-safe, and there's no promise for him to play up with the Wings during the season/playoffs. If he ever does make it, guaranteed he sure as hell earned it. Edited September 25, 2009 by Shoreline

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 Andreas Lilja isn't an enforcer, he's just been in a few scraps. I wouldn't call Souray or Weber "enforcers"... These guys had like 3-4 fights in a season. As far as May is concerned, he's also a shell of his former self. It's ridiculous how people get a boner for a guy who'll drop the gloves one time. We don't have a legit enforcer unless Tardif somehow makes his way up, or if Callahan makes the team in the future.
