Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 (edited) Come on, you know that isn't the way teams impose their will on another team. Anaheim didn't go into that Detroit series to fight -- otherwise, Parros would have been in the lineup, and no one on your team would have dropped the gloves there. Where Anaheim has been so successful against Detroit in the postseason is out-hitting and out-grinding. This has been what's made them a fun team to watch, actually. That first line of theirs is legitimately talented, but both Getzlaf and Perry have no qualms throwing their bodies at anyone. And Getzlaf and Perry didn't score because they imposed their will. Their top line was just dynamite. A lot of their goals were scored off the rush and off their defense forcing Wings players to the outside. A lot of Detroit's shots were perimeter shots. As of last season, Anaheim had been geared toward heavy body-checking. Positional play wasn't high on the priorities there. But finishing checks, wearing down the defense, these things centered their gameplan. They wanted to win against a tired team in the third than out-skill a team for a full 60 minutes. And Anaheim's body checking style got quiet pretty quick after it lost them game one. They didn't try to out skill OR out hit Detroit. They played a smothering defensive game with their defensemen (who were all playoff beasts) which kept Detroit's best players to the outside and used their top line to completely take over the games. They didn't try to crush players, they didn't use enforcers to scare Detroit. They played a very disciplined system. They did pretty damn good. Their style shut down Detroit's biggest guns, and a single line carried your team to the brink. They did that because the supporting cast around them hit and fought for everything. Wrong. Alls I'm saying is, whether it's Brad May or a player of his ilk, I think Detroit is well served utilizing him. He won't make a noticeable difference in any specific moment, but when he and his line-mates have worn down an opposing line throughout the game, that line becomes easier to handle. You mean like this? Anaheim has shown that one weakness of Detroit's is to play them tight and physical. The Anaheim team of a year ago wasn't deep enough to make it stick, but the one in 2007 sure was. That's how the rest of the league wants to play this team, to wear down your skill players. Babs is absolutely right in thinking a player like May would benefit the club. Once again, physicality didn't hinder Detroit. Their defensive system did. Detroit did not play a puck possession game, tried to create offense from the perimeter, and were basically handled easily because Anaheim's defense kept to their system (which didn't live and die off their physical game) and kept Detroit to the outside. Millions. Good one, tiger. Edited September 25, 2009 by Doc Holiday

uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 25, 2009 So Brad May is like a giant fly-swatter? A medium sized fly swatter. Downey on the other hand....never seen a swatter so huge.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 I'm wondering whether Brad May could potentially be the Dallas Drake of two years ago. The guy can certainly fight, but he also knows how to skate and play hockey. But the question is who's spot would he take and where would the money come from? Also, maybe Maltby's.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 He looked good both during the game and during the fight. I like hes taken over Downey's #20.
Carman 387 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 May looked pretty good for coming off the streets. I'm hoping he can get more of a chance then Downey had last year. I really feel he can add some good things to the team. Not too mention maybe he can teach Helm and Kader some veteran energy guy "techniques"
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Looked pretty good. I found it hillarious that he was advertising himself during his interview with Trevor. Also I enjoyed it when he bowled over that Toronto player. Whoever it was.

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Kopecky's spot of a year ago. Also, maybe Maltby's. Zetterberg Datsyuk Homer Franzen Filppulla Leino Williams Cleary Bertuzzi Draper Eaves Helm Maltby is already sitting on the sidelines by my record.
Carman 387 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Zetterberg Datsyuk Homer Franzen Filppulla Leino Williams Cleary Bertuzzi Draper Eaves Helm Maltby is already sitting on the sidelines by my record. I can see May subbing with Eaves for that forth line in case some more muscle is needed. Draper-Helm-May Should provide some good energy. Eaves hasn't impressed me that much yet, I can't say I've watch the preseason games intently though so we'll see what happens.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Eaves/May is a good rotation. One brings more speed and skill, and one brings the physical element, they both hit, and May can keep the flies off. I'm just happy we've gotten alot more Canadian, and alot tougher then offseason. (Frig you Hossa!)
newfy 695 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Rosehill is a quality fighter and May showed he can still hang in their pretty well. I'm all for this if we can get him signed.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 I don't see May getting a roster spot. I want him too, bad, but the Wings have no space and I don't see them making an extra move to bring May into the fold. I would love to be wrong hear because to me he is a Dallas Drake type player, a banger who can play, not like Downey or Mac.
savaking72 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 I really liked seeing Brad May in the Wing's uniform. I hope he gets to play tonight in Toronto. I thought he looked pretty good in his first game with no real warm up. It would be interesting to see him on the 4th line (like what people have been saying). I really don't have a gauge on his speed, so it would be nice to see him tonight again. Keep him around a bit Kenny. It is sure nice to hear Mickey and Ken again. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 26, 2009 Zetterberg Datsyuk Homer Franzen Filppulla Leino Williams Cleary Bertuzzi Draper Eaves Helm Maltby is already sitting on the sidelines by my record. Leino is too unproven to be on the 2nd line, and Helm is too good to be a 4th liner. Eaves gives us nothing that we don't already have. I'd sit him in favor of May most of the time, especially since you have him on the 4th line, and May is way more of a 4th line checker than Eaves is.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Cleary Franzen-Filppula-Bertuzzi Leino-Helm-Williams Homer-Draper-Eaves Maltby Those are the only lines I can come up with. But I still like more ZDH as 1st line and Helm centering the fourth with Williams centering 3rd and Flip the 2nd.
