How the NJ Devils treated Brendan Shanahan...

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Shanahan was treated like any other hockey player would.

Nothing to see here.

For me, Shanahan isn't just any other hockey player.

Don't do this to a guy who is very likely in the last year of his hockey life.

Neither was Craig Janney.

...well, yeah he was, but still.

You're mixing up sentimentality and rationality.

Devils didn't want him. Shanahan released statement saying split was "mutual & amicable".

If Shanahan himself isn't going to piss and moan about it......why are you?

Of course it's never easy to see a great player at the end of the road, especially when he was such a big part of the Wings.

But simply paying him a million dollars, along with having that roster space AND cap space utilized for a player you don't want, is bad business.

Shanahan even admits that he knew when he signed this may happen.

So why git 'yer panties in a bunch?

yeah those bastards, coming to a mutual understanding and agreeing!

I'm wondering if some people actually read the article.

Once again, we are so quick to want to assume the worst and tear somebody down. Man, I love American culture...filled with lawsuits, hatred, mudslinging, slander and absolutely no critical thought whatsoever.

You all should know better that Shanahan of all people would know what he was getting into.

You know, because he's actually one of those people that thinks.

Nothing even remotely disrespectful about this. Shanny didn't get a role he was happy with, so the team just had to go through a rather convoluted process to void the contract.

Does make me wonder how they were able to void the contract without any apparent negative consequences for either the team or Shanny though. Probably because it was just a one year deal, and he didn't play in the regular season. If you could do the same with anyone, it would make the whole 35+ contract stipulation pretty meaningless.

I think the problem is that they DID read the article. I saw Mark Everson at the top of the page and didn't bother to go any further.

Shanahan has this sense of entitlement where he thinks he deserves special treatment in league above all other NHL players. The only players in the NHL who deserve any special treatment is Crosby and Malkin, they've earned it.

Signed,

Bettman

Poor Shanny, didn't like it because Babcock expected him to play hard to EARN his icetime. :violin: I don't feel bad at all for him cuz I felt he screwed the Wings by baiting them along until so late in the offseason, not much left in the freeagent market....f*** HIM

Lou Lamirello knows every salary cup loop-hole in the book.

This. Lou Lamoriello is a prick. But... if they had an agreement, then it's not a big deal. Definitely comes off looking a little lame, though.

Wow, someone has issues.

As for Shanny, that's the nature of the business. It's too bad he got shafted that way but I would have likely done the same thing in his shoes.

That's not what happened at all.

Babcock came in and rode everyone really hard. Even Babcock, Yzerman, all these guys admitted that when he first came to Detroit he was...well...himself, but even to the veterans. If you have responsible veterans (Yzerman, Shanahan, etc.) you don't need to be looking over their shoulder all the time telling them what to do. Yzerman basically told Babcock to calm down and lay off the team a bit.

Shanahan didn't demand special treatment, it's just a shock to go from being treated like a responsible player to having someone treat you like their kid all of a sudden. Had nothing to do with work ethic or earning a spot.

Babcock realized his mistake and toned it down, by which time Shanahan claimed he felt he wasn't fitting in with the team's future anymore (which he really wasn't). In reality, maybe he thought the team would start sinking, we don't know. We can only take him for his word at this point.

Therefore, it was a perfectly responsible, understandable departure from Detroit for Shanahan. Now, as for him delaying in the off-season, it happens. It's a hard decision, especially if he felt he wouldn't fit in with the team. Players take a long time to decide all the time. It sucks, but it's not like he did it to screw the Wings.

Every since he left Detroit I've never ever heard him bash the Wings in any way, so I really doubt there is any ill-will.

Nothing to see, I agree... Even if it was a tad classless, he still doesn't have to wait until payday to buy groceries... He's still rich.
