Chelios signed by Wolves

He's currently a PPG player (and more importantly, +7 with only 2 PM), but he can't play. He's a joke. He's too old, doesn't know when to let go and all that. I'm really not terribly surprised he's doing well so far.

Kinda brings back bad memories to see him in that #7 jersey tho- remembering how much it sucked to play Chicago w/ Chelios on the ice seeming all game long.

And who are you or who am I or who is anybody to tell him when to stop playing outside of Chelios, his family, or a doctor?

He's beyond finished. If they wanted him for a coach, just hire him as such.

Your not seeing the whole picture. I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit did offer him a position. However since he's still gung-ho about playing, he even could potentially take such a suggestion as an insult. Not saying this (or MANY other scenarios actually happened, but I highly doubt you'd know if it did). He is NHLPA for the Wings and one of two wings (out of 4...sigh) on a board currently assisting the NHLPA, he hasn't left the organization entirely.

Exactly. He (or anyone else) doesn't owe it to anyone to retire when they think he should, to "preserve his legacy" or some stupid crap like that that only means anything to fans and media. If anything, this enhances his legacy in my mind--how many all-time greats love the game enough to keep playing it in the minors after their NHL days are apparently over? Dude could easily sit back, run Cheli's, be a hockey dad...instead he chooses to ride a bus to places like Rockford, Peoria and Grand Rapids to keep playing.

Already bought tickets behind the visitors' bench for the Wolves @ Lake Erie game 12/13. Best of luck Cheli!

Kevin Allen from USA Today is tweeting that there is an NHL team wondering whether to sign Chelios, although nothing is imminent.

http://twitter.com/kausatoday

My speculation: Montreal, with Hal Gill out for a few weeks now?

CKAC reports Bob Gainey has talked to Chris Chelios.

BTW, Chelios added another 2 assists tonight for a total of 1 goal, 7 points in 6 games.

Beat me to the stat update, but if I have to stay up until 3 to get scoop, no thanks ;) . I'll just add that one of the As was the only one on the GWG midway through the 3rd. Damn...

He keeps going like this, I may have to go back to rooting for the Monsters on 12/13 because Cheli will be with the Habs or something lol.

From TSN :

Chris Chelios could find his way back to the NHL this season.

Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney is badly in need of a defenceman and plans to travel to San Antonio to scout the 47-year-old defenceman in person on Friday night. Chelios is currently playing with the AHL's Chicago Wolves and has caught the attention of a couple teams.

"He's there, he's savvy and he's in great shape," Maloney said Tuesday at the NHL's GM meetings. "(But) I don't know -- the pace of the NHL game is so quick."

The Coyotes haven't had any contract talks yet with Chelios.

"We haven't spoken," said Maloney. "He's just another name, a right-handed shooting defenceman, (so we're) saying, 'OK, let's talk about it.' A week ago we were in pretty good shape health-wise, a week later you have two of your top six down."

With all the injuries going on in the league, it might be a good opportunity for him. He certainly is able to contribute somewhat still. If only for veteran presence on a young team like Phoenix(although they did add a lot of veterans?).

Alright i know that alot of people are Cheli supporters or ARE Cheli fans but feel its time for the guy to move on, but the guy can still produce. Hes probably one of the best in shape guys on the ice night in and night out, not to mention hes a point per game player so far in his league. People that have seen him play have only had good things to say about his play. Now i know the league hes playing in isnt exactly the NHL by anymeans, but you also have to take into account that the last 2 or 3 seasons in the NHL he was paired with Brett Lebda, who many of us dont find a very effective defensemen. I think that the bad pairing he had for the last few seasons plays a role as to why he didnt have great season, not to mention his last two seasons as a wing it seemed as if he was scratched every other game, so he wasnt given the complete opportunity a player should. Now i know hes slower than he used to be, and has some bad turnovers and such, but i think his play so far this year shows that the guy can still contribute on some NHL teams especially with the injury bug hitting practically every team in the league. If we could possibly get lebda off our books in a trade for a goalie or something then i wouldnt even be upset to see the wings brng him back to take his spot. I know ill get bashed for saying that, but i think alot of fans overlook Cheli because he has lost a few steps, but you have to take into account that this guy was one of the best Dmen in the league for years, and even losing those steps still makes him a good player, even at his age.

Great news  Although it sucks that I might not see Cheli play here in Hamilton later this season. :P

I was really hoping that Cheli would be signed by an NHL team this year (Hawks or Canadiens)...

but I'm sure Cheli could teach the young guys on the Yotes a thing or two :)

If there is any athlete that can play in the NHL in his late 40s, it's Chelly. Not being able to regularly crack the 2007-09 Red Wings defence is not necessarily a sign of a bad defenceman, right Kyle Quincey?
