ltgator333 3 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 Technically yes he's a rookie. This year ends that one way or another though, he'll be over age by next season.
Esquire 324 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) Oh for Christ's sake. Can you be a little more defensively pessimistic. Dats scored 2 of the 5 goals, Homer got 1, Kronwall got 1 and Williams got 1. Are you saying that these guys can't be counted on to score and that this is an abberition? Yea, right. You shouldn't count on Dats, Homer and Kronwall to score because we lost Sammy and Hossa. This makes ZERO sense. Glad to see level-headed discussion is alive and well here on LGW, as usual. Look, all I'm implying is that 5+ goal games shouldn't be expected from this year's team at the rate that the Wings put them up last season. The players we lost and the players we gained have been all been well documented and discussed on here already. Using that information, combined with what coaching and management have said before this season even began, was that this year is supposed to be more about defensive responsibility winning games more than dumping goals on the opposition winning games. Also, I'm NOT saying that the players you mentioned shouldn't be counted on to score. However, it should be noted that although it's only 10 games into this season, the Wings are already averaging 0.90 GPG less than last season at this time. Pasha scoring 2 goals and Homer adding another one should be enough for this team to win a game if they all lock it down in their own end after those goals. Having to score 5 goals just to win a game is NOT acceptable, especially when you have to put them past the (presumabely) best goalie in the NHL. So once again, I'm simply saying that if everyone is expecting big goal totals to come from this roster, that perhaps they should reconsider after looking at what has already been shown. We're going to have to grind out a lot more 1 goal games this season and I think people are just starting to realize that. And I'm sorry, but Homer leading the team in goals is great, but after 11 games I think everyone expected Pav and Hank to be a little closer in team totals then what they are right now. EDIT - Corrected my math. Edited October 28, 2009 by BleedRed&White

russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 The life of Jimmy Howard is a hot and cold one for sure... He is very streaky...if he can stay hot I will be a happy man.

Broken 16 381 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) I think Howard got a HUGE helping hand from his teammates last night and some of his rebound control was ridiculous. The fact that we scored 5 goals on Luongo is a massive feat for this years edition on the Wings and should NOT be relied on in future games. This was an exception, NOT the rule. That being said, a win is a win and its always a bigger deal with younger players in regards to their self-confidence. It was fantastic to see the team rally after each goal when it would have been easy to just say "here we go again". Great game, great result. GO WINGS!!! Ordinarily, I would agree with you. However, Howard made a lot of high quality saves last night. The shots against was down last night (I think) but the chances they had were really good ones. Howard did exactly what he is supposed to do. Make the big saves. The only goal he allowed besides the 5 on 3 goal was the Schneider shot that took him by surprise. I bet he'll be more aware the next time he faces him. I think you are downplaying Howard's accomplishment last night. He came in down 2 goals. Made big saves. Looked REALLY strong during the PK (almost had that Sedin shot on the 5 on 3). Last night was a nice step for Howard. He only let in two goals and looked only a little bit confused when the Nucks pulled Luongo. Edited October 28, 2009 by Broken

All I said was "I think Howard got a HUGE helping hand from his teammates last night and some of his rebound control was ridiculous" I'm wasn't downplaying his effort, merely pointing out that his teammates came to his side after being down a goal twice after tying it at 2 and his rebound control was ridiculous at times. Other than that, I certainly liked what he did for us last night and do agree that it's a step in the right direction. Although, I'm not sure how Schneider's shot "surprised him" because I thought it was a goalies job to anticipate that he'll be shot at during the course of the game. A) Looked to me like someone (a Wing I think) skated right through his line of vision just before Schneider let it go. B) Schneider has a very quick release. C) Schneider's shot is a rocket. Motown4013 350 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 That was an easy loss for us last night if babcock doesnt pull Ozzie and put in Howard. He was GREAT last night which was so nice to see. I thought he looked confident and handled the puck well. I agree with the comments about he has gotten better each game he had played which is very important. Two goals in 2 periods is decent and neither were beauties...... but neither were stinkers. Way to go Howard...Keep it up boy

SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) Why? I'm indifferent about J-Ho, but he's been terrible up until last night... Even on Saturday against Colorado? Overall so far his gameplay hasn't been absolutely magnifique, but it still humors me when people are already saying he's done or shouldn't be on here when he hasn't even been given a lengthy/ample amount of time to show that he belongs or not. FedorovMan91 1 Report post Posted October 29, 2009 It is quite funny some people say he was ONLY good last night. By the stats, Osgood and Howard had been terrible together. Since two games in Sweden, Osgood got back his form and played enough good until the last night. Howard, on the other hand, did not get many chances to start as Osgood got, but looked like he has potential to be the starting goalie during last two games. The goalie needs much time to develop. Sometimes it looks funny when Howard and Osgood both perform bad and come here to say For Osgood: well.. he will turn around in the playoff and there is time to go, Let's wake up Ozzie. For Howard: f***, trade him, how much more time do we have to spend on this kid? Be patient guys
LidstromIsASuperhero 29 Report post Posted October 29, 2009 I personally thought Howard show some real flashes of brilliance against Vancouver, but has a few glaring problems that he should work out. His rebound control was terrible, and he would've made some harder saves look a lot easier if he was positioned a little better. To make matters worse, he seemed having a hard time getting up to make a second save. If he can just control those rebounds he will be fine, but he has the tools to make big saves which is what we need as long as he can iron things out. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 30, 2009 Due to plans last night I missed the game, was his play as bad as the 5-1 second period score I saw?
Bryguy 103 Report post Posted October 30, 2009 If he was that bad, i think babs wouldve pulled him. He could hang on to some of these rebounds, but when it sits in your crease for 8 seconds. Youd hope a dman would knock it out somwhere. Anyway i think it showed real well, that he didnt melt down. And made some good saves to allow us to even get a point. I think last night's game was good for "growing Little Jimmy up" a bit. Considering the rest of the team and how bad they were for the first 50 minutes, I thought he did as well as anyone could have expected, and then some. He needs work, yes, but both goalies need to work harder right now and get on track. The team needs to show up for an entire game, while we're at it here. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 30, 2009 WOW! After reading the articles (Which most only mentioned Jimmy getting beat by O'Sully( good for the former Manch Monarch, but s***ty it was against the Wings)) I didn't have a good feel for his game, no one posted in this thread, which to me said he did neither really good nor really bad. Plus the fact he made it to the SO, I wasn't too worried, but I am pulling hard for this kid and trying to be objective at the same time! Thanks for the info!
