Worst Start of the Season since 93-94?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Well I just heard that this season has been our worst start since the 93-94 season and I wanted to hear about some comparisons on what we have today but didn't back then and vice versa.

Although we had a pretty bad start back then, we ended up first of the division.

We had Stevie Y back then and he played 58 games that season. He managed to get 82 points which is pretty awesome but I noticed that his point production per game started getting lower and lower after that season and the few after (I'm guessing due to him changing his style to a more defensive one)

So to those of you that have been Wings fans since back in the day, how does this start of the season feel compared to the one back then?

What was the main problem that caused a slow start and how did the Wings turn it around? Did it feel as bad back then as it does today?

Please share your memories or whatever you can remember. I became a Wings fan back in the 95 season and I don't really know too much about the season before, so I'd love to hear about how it was like back then.

For this season it's safe to say that it's due to either one or several out of : Goaltending, Bad defense, offense not clicking when it's needed, Brad McCrimmon, Ozzie, Lebda, all of the above, etc.

That was then, this is now. People really need to stop comparing previous seasons as a means of having hope. Its a completely different team now, and its solely up to them to turn things around.

The Wings are worse in current points in the 11 games than they are playing. The Wings are doing okay.

Check this out, the Detroit Red Wings have earned 4pts out of a possible 8pts on this grueling western road trip against some of the hottest teams and goalies in the league right now (Bryzgalov, Anderson and Luongo)

Wings got 50% of the possible points so far on the road. That's not bad at all... especially against the hottest teams in the league.

The Wings are playing more determined hockey than I have seen them play since 2008 when we won the cup. Adversity isn't a bad thing. Not facing adversity can be a bad thing.

Wings are fine.

Comparisons to any other season are pretty much meaningless. Different players, different staff, different teams they are playing against. There are so many variables that change year to year it is completely impossible to logically compare the different years. Although, maybe Crossed-Arms Guy can come up with some sort of mathematical function to do it. That's the only way I see it being feasible.

Haha I was just asking out of pure curiosity really. Not for any kind of hope. I like to think that I'm one of the few optimistic posters here regardless of how bad things are, so I don't really need hope when I always believe things will work out for the best.

I've always known the Wings for being pretty dominant and a start like this is somewhat different to me.

One thing I do notice though, is that you folks on this forum get pretty damn pessimistic whenever the Wings aren't doing great :P

Sorry for asking, just thought there'd be an oldie that could enlighten me a bit

I think that should be "worst start since 2003-04" (5W-5L-1T then). It could be worse.

Actually, since we're 4-4-3 atm, it's closer to the 93-94 season.

That season our first 11 games we were 4-7-0

I guess if you want to go by points then sure, but to me an OT loss is still a loss. The fact that we haven't even won 5 games yet is what makes it closer imo, then again we all have our own opinions and what not.

If your going to compare this season to 94, than I'll have no problem with the wings in 12-13 & 13-14.

The Wings are 5-2-3 (0.650) in their last 10 games. They are 4 points behind Chicago with a game in hand.

They just came back from a 5 game/12 day road trip where they played Phoenix, Colorado, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. They got 6 out of the possible 10 points.

They won 2 out of 3 from the trip to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary - 3 of the toughest buildings to play in in the league.

They had arguably one of their best performances (according to Babs) in Calgary.

And this is all without Franzen and Filpulla.

The Wings are fine.

More/less yes, but just like in 93/94 like you said, they finished first. Hell, they won 62 games after a slow start in 95/96. No need to go overly apes**t about things too much right now during a such a lengthy season when this team doesn't have trouble making the playoffs, unless shown otherwise this year over the course of the season.

If it were just a 10 game season or whatever, this would be a disappointing season, but thankfully that is not the case.

And in our first 12 games this year, we only played 4 times at The Joe.
