Shaman 713 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 I love Darren Helm, he flies around the ice and can hit and handle the puck, but after last nights game , does anyone believe he will ever develop a scoring touch? He blew 2 breakaways tonight and has never really been able to finish. If he can never finish will he ever be more than a 3rd/4th liner?
jollymania 162 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 he had the scoring touch in the playoffs last year, rememebr the breakaway goal and the series winning goal in OT.

wingnut40 176 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Zion, fail troll. 0/10. Anyway, he's fast, he hits, and he's still young. And hey, he was clutch in the playoffs and that's all that matters IMO. He just needs to polish up a few things and like a fine wine, he'll get better with age.
Wombat 26 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 I have never thought he would develop a scoring touch. I see him as a better version of Draper. Helm could fill a great roll on this team if he can be the 3rd line center consistently. It's OK to have a fast guy that can play defense and hit but can't score much. You need those guys to win Cups, just like you need big time scorers.

He might not have the best puck handling, but he can still hold on to it for a long time. Remember his penalty kill? No puck handling skills used, yet he held on to it for 24 seconds. That penalty kill was all skating ability, and lets not forget to mention he is absolutely amazing at the art of lifting the stick every single game.

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 he didnt 'blow' two breakaways, he was simply stopped on two breakaways. I also seem to remember two times where Helm DID score on two breakaways, one of which was in the playoffs. Don't take the blame out on Helm, when our ENTIRE team was unable to score against The Panthers. Also, give their team some credit, their goalie played great and their defense stymied us. Of course I would like Helm to have scored more goals this season, but with the exception of Holmstrom and Maltby, this holds true for ALL wings players and an overall lack of scoring production. Great to see Z finally scoring like he should tho.
Zion 93 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Really, Darren Helm's scoring is the least of this team's worries. Perhaps we're used to two years of his playoff EXCELLENCE that this "mediocre" (if you can call it that) regular season he's having is a bit of a surprise. Esquire 324 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 I love Darren Helm, he flies around the ice and can hit and handle the puck, but after last nights game , does anyone believe he will ever develop a scoring touch? He blew 2 breakaways tonight and has never really been able to finish. If he can never finish will he ever be more than a 3rd/4th liner? I'm not going to pass judgement on Helm's whole career based on 15 games played in his first full season. I also don't think his scoring touch is the reason he's on this team. If he pots a few here and there, cool. If not, I'm more than happy seeing him fly around the ice, hit anything not in a Wings sweater, and continue to excel at faceoffs. ZOMG HE MISSED TWO BREAKAWAY OPPORTUNITIES, ZOMG CLEARLY A ONE-GAME SAMPLE SIZE IS ENOUGH TO DECLARE HIM A FAILURE. I'll say it again: obligatory "we lost, so clearly there's something wrong with the team and we need to make changes" threads.
taxijim 11 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Helm is not a natural goal scorer & never will be .....that's a job for guys like Dats & Leino (where have they been lately?). I feel the Wings are a much better team with Helmer on board adding speed, grit ,&energy which always seems to lift the team. If you think the Wings lost last night becauuse of Helm I think you're watching the wrong sport.

Im using last night as evidence that helm has a good skill set, but, I am asking the question do people believe that skill set will one day include the ability to score lets say 20 goals a season? Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Was Helm ever projected to be a top 6 scorer? From what I remember, the Wings brass always had him penned in as a solid checker, and he's doing that just fine.

Probably not. In the 122 games he played for the Griffins he managed only 29 goals and while there is always the possibility that he finds a goal scoring touch despite that, it's definitely not the norm. If there was ever a player that I would want to buck the trend it would be Helm
The Mule 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 He isn't here to put pucks in the back of the net. He's here to give our team an energy boost, wear down the opposition, and prevent the opposition from hitting the back of our net, all of which he does effectively at breakneck speed. Darren Helm is here to do this, among other things:
Glubki 17 Report post Posted November 21, 2009 Kris Draper used to be the same exact way during his first 4 or 5 years with the Wings. Man could he fly down the ice and I can remember saying to myself this guy isn't going to amount to much if he doesn't start burying one of his numerous breakaways. Helm may never win the Selke but he has some skills that are better than Draper was when he was at that age. Not every play is going to bury 20 plus goals a year. I can't figure out why some expect every player to be on the top line, score lots of goals, hit everything that moves, goal tend, fight, and be assistant coach. Everyone has a job, he's doing his.
