Trade Lidstrom at the Deadline if Out of the Playoffs?

Rate this topic

Here's an interesting question.

Assuming Detroit is out of the playoff picture by March, would you trade Lidstrom given he's a free agent at the end of this season?

Keep in mind, he could probably fetch two first round picks and some decent prospects.

I would, even if it would probably mean he wouldn't be resiging this offseason.

No Movement Clause.

Plus, that is a really good way to devalue all of the storied "loyalty of the organization" that we have used for years to bring in good free agents. Furthermore, what kind of message do you think that would send to the young players we have now? "Gee, thanks for playing all those years, winning all those accolades, and being an ambassador for the game, but now that times are a little rough we're going to sell you up the creek! Come talk to us when you retire, and we'll have a 'special' night for you!" You can forget the idea of homegrown/drafted players ever taking a "hometown discount" again.

Doing something like that would be devastating on so many levels it's almost beyond comprehension. Lose-Lose situation, IMO.

Where does it say he has a no movement clause? I don't recall seeing that anywhere.

Trading a 39-year-old player at the end of his contract on a team that's probably missing the playoffs for the first time in almost two decades doesn't exactly devalue the oganization's player loyalty from my perspective. Besides, it's been proven that free agents won't take a massive paycut in today's salary cap to play here, so who cares?

It smells like troll in here.

That's about the dumbest thing I've ever read on this site.

It's a Reilly thread so it's good for 3 things

1) Completely worthless opinions and theories put forth by Reilly.

2) about 200 posts, most of which completely blow up any of his "theories"

3) It will eventually get pulled. And once the Wings turn it around, he'll disappear, only to resurface when the team is facing adversity.

I don't think he's truly a Wings fan actually. I think he is a troll, like you stated.

K, well I don't see it anywhere else. I mean, I know NHLSCAP looks like a legitimate website and all...

Trust me, it's there. I didn't realize it was a No Movement clause, not a No Trade clause, but I do remember them stipulating that when he re-signed with us a few years ago. I don't think this was a new item in his most recent extension, I seem to remember seeing something about him getting it when we re-signed him in 06.

First, none of the Wings' young players are any good. They're not superstars and they probably won't be superstars. I high hopes for some players, like Tatar, Smith, and Helm, obviously. But honestly, none of them are blue chippers. So let's calm down with this talk of sending messages and let me know when all these young players start contributing.

And besides, what did all these years of loyaltly do when it came to re-sign Hudler? He bolted. And it's not like Zetterberg or Datsyuk were easy contracts for Holland to get done, either. In a salary cap era, loyalty is meaningless. Players want money first and foremost.

Those sources are still pretty crappy. For all we know, they all could be sourcing the same website.
Fine, if you want to get nitpicky about it, how do you know that Lidstrom isn't making $7.45 a year to play for us? (That's seven dollars and forty five cents, not seven-point-four-five million dollars). Have you seen his contract with your own eyes? How can you know for sure that the figures listed on this site or any other site are legitimate?

NHLSCAP.com is very reputable when it comes to things like this. Matt lists that site as one of his sources for the Salary Chart that's available here on LGW.)

It's listed on NHLPA.com, an official league website. Seems like a pretty good source to me.
