Trade Lidstrom at the Deadline if Out of the Playoffs?

This is beyond the dumbest thread I've ever seen; it's the dumbest thread I will ever see in my entire life, and that's saying a LOT, considering I post here.

This is akin to saying, "hey, how about we trade Steve Yzerman?" or "hey, how about we trade Gordie Howe?"

You just don't do it. If you have that thought, you let it bounce around in your head, then realize you were stupid to even think that, and let it go unsaid.

Because saying it makes you look like a moron.

Here's an interesting question.

Assuming Detroit is out of the playoff picture by March, would you trade Lidstrom given he's a free agent at the end of this season?

Keep in mind, he could probably fetch two first round picks and some decent prospects.

I would, even if it would probably mean he wouldn't be resiging this offseason.

I'm sorry.

I'm laughing so hard I don't know whether to call you every 4-letter word in the book or just start crying at the sheer stupidity of it.

Trade Nick Lidstrom. Trade him. As in, take him from our team and put him on some other team.

That is weapons-grade stupid. No....not even weapons-grade. That is full on Palin-level stupid.

Ron White had a very funny line quite similar to this one. He was talking about someone he knew who was a homophobe and this particular person said something rather stupid and Ron looked at the guy and said "Hey, next time you have a thought....let it go."

I think that applies here.

It's listed on NHLPA.com, an official league website. Seems like a pretty good source to me.

Fair enough, how about this. Tomas Kaberle of the Leafs has a rather famous no trade clause. His NTC is pretty much common knowledge, as MacK_Attack will attest to. Do you see anything on NHLPA.com about his no trade clause? Just because it's not listed on the PA's website, doesn't mean it's not in his contract. And now I'm going to get nitpicky, the NHLPA website is not an official "league" website. The NHL and the NHLPA are two completely separate entities. They are no more part of the NHL than the UAW is part of Ford/GM/Chrysler.

And besides, what did all these years of loyaltly do when it came to re-sign Hudler? He bolted. And it's not like Zetterberg or Datsyuk were easy contracts for Holland to get done, either. In a salary cap era, loyalty is meaningless. Players want money first and foremost.
Granted, Hudler didn't buy into the loyalty aspect to re-sign here, but just because he rejected it doesn't mean that we should throw the baby out with the bathwater. Hudler is more what would be considered the exception than the rule. Player loyalty is VERY important here, and our contract extensions given in the last few years prove that.

Lidstrom, 2006. 2 year extension for 7.45 million/year. Fresh off winning his 4th Norris, easily still in the prime of his career. Could have made 8 or 9 million by going somewhere else.

Zetterberg, 2005. Signs a four year contract with a 2.6 million/year hit. Easily could have made more by going to the KHL or by signing an offer sheet with another team (he was an RFA that year). Sure, he had more limited choices than if he was a UFA, but he still had choices.

Datsyuk, 2007. Signs a seven year extension, at a 6.7 million/year hit. Just TRY to convince me (or anyone on these boards) that Datsyuk couldn't get more money somewhere else.

Zetterberg 2009. Franzen 2009. You may see isolated incidents, but I see a pattern. To put it another way, if the organization's loyalty isn't what's helping us keep our talented players for what many would call below market value, then what is? Is Kenny Holland hypnotizing them during the contract negotiations? Slipping them a Mickey before they sign?

That said, this thread has run it's course. Look at almost all the other posts here if you don't believe me.
