Guest ZetterbergFourty Report post Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) Why in the f*** would anyone name a trophy after Crosby? Let that little ***** pay his dues in the league first. I dont give a s*** what he's accomplished at a young age. Try naming s*** after him in 30 years. As for the other proposed changes, the only one I am really into is the Scotty Bowman Trophy for coach of the season. Edit: I think you were being sarcastic with the Crosby trophy names, if not, you're seriously sickening. Edited December 8, 2009 by ZetterbergFourty
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 The exact same thing was said when the CBC dropped the HNIC theme. Traditions aren't s*** in the NHL anymore. The difference being that the HNIC theme was hockey tradition on the level of the Calgary Flames logo, and went away due to a monetary reason that had nothing to do with the NHL. Not hockey tradition that goes back through the early years of the league where the trophies' names have a specific reason for being named as such. And again, the PoW conference and Campbell conference and the corresponding division names, while it's what most of us are used to, only go back to the WHA merger. Some tradition. West/East has been the division of the league for more years than the Adams/Norris/Smythe/Patrick setup which lasted for 19 total seasons, and that was the case until 80-81, and became the case again in 2006-07. The named divisions were also divided geographically anyway, and named for people who also have awards named for them. If you want to honor more recent greats, name the divisions with great players, coaches, etc. who do not have awards named for them. I would say create a Gretzky award for assists, Orr for defensive scoring, Langway for defensive defenseman, and Howe for best forward; equivalent to Norris, basically. That would leave names such as Steve Yzerman, Ray Bourque, Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, Ted Lindsay, Mike Bossy, Guy Lafleur, Dominik Hasek, Denis Potvin, Patrick Roy, or Marcel Dionne as recent great retired players who could potentially have a division or conference named after them. Beyond that, there are always past league presidents or influential league officials.
Guest ZetterbergFourty Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Glen Healy can STFU. It needs to stay as it is, these people weren't just picked randomly, they're all historically important and relevant to the game. I'm quite sure George Vezina wasnt that great of a goalie. Still dont understand this one.

But his number should probably be retired league wide though.
Guest ZetterbergFourty Report post Posted December 8, 2009 I agree, it's way too early to name a trophy after him. But his number should probably be retired league wide though. Is that before or after he shatters all of Wayne's records? It's not like there wasnt someone before him with the number 87. I think Wayne's was unique because he was the only player in the NHL to ever wear it, and obviously with that, the best. I would say they dont retire it league wide, Wayne was something else entirely, Crosby's are getting to be a dime a dozen these days if that makes any sense. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 I'm quite sure George Vezina wasnt that great of a goalie. Still dont understand this one. Vezina was considered the greatest goalie over the last two decades of his life. He played his entire career without being pulled; 328 regular season games and 39 playoff games. He was considered Montreal's best player and led the league (NHA and later NHL) in GAA seven times over a fifteen year career (unless you include the opening period of 1925-26), and carried the team to the Cup finals five times, winning twice. He was one of the twelve players inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame when it was first created. Personally, I consider Vezina among the top ten, if not top five goaltenders of all-time. I gotta say George Hainsworth edges Vezina out if only for that seaosn he had a 0.500 shutout record. Apparently the equivalent ofthe chances of that happening today are the same as a basketball player scoring over 700 points in one game.

That right there only serves to add to my point that Vezina is one of the greatest goaltenders or all time. And the fact that the Vezina was donated in his memory further points to the fact that it should not be renamed.

Frankly no matter how good a player is, it doesn't warrant retiring his number league-wide. If that were the case, why aren't 4 and 9 retired across all teams? Howe and Orr are still—to this day—considered two of the best all-time, right along with Gretzky. Leave number retiring to individual teams. If a team feels that 99 shouldn't be worn, then great for them. Otherwise, leave it for the Oilers/Kings/Blues/Rangers (though the last two are lol-worthy) to have it in the rafters. God I hope you're kidding. Whatever you're huffing must be illegal in most countries. Sarcasm detection fail.

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Next thing we know it they'll have another name for that little black disc they play the game with. Maybe they'll just call it the "ball" and re-organize the game into two periods with a "halftime" to mak the game more friendly to the Pittsburgh/Chicago types who are new to hockey. Shady Ultima 40 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Howe-Best Powerforward/combination of toughness and ability to put up points. How about the player with the most points and PIMs put together? Only problem with that is that you can't reward penalties.

Carman 387 Report post Posted December 8, 2009 It's text on a f***in page. So sorry if I think that someone like Carman might not be kidding. No man. I totally want Babcock to sit the soft Euro of a captain we have. While he's at it might as well put Osgood in front of the opponents net on the Powerplay. He always finds ways to get the puck in the net he is in front of anyways might as well put it to use...
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) It was really REALLY obvious. No, when it's Carman, it really isn't. What it is, is sad. Guest zackmorris Report post Posted December 8, 2009 Ugghhh I'm clearly talking to a wall who isn't familiar with Carman's history. I figured it was sarcastic but with him I'll never make assumptions. I do however see that he's in the "embrace is and go overboard with it" phase to shake the rep.
