cupforwings 138 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=510245&...vid=DL|NHL|home So Jimmy Howard's play this year has team USA looking at him as a possible 3rd goalie. What are the chances that he beats both Quick and Anderson for a spot on the olympic team?
Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Probably as good a chance as Osgood has to make team Canada.

dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Don't see it happening but it's good that he gets some recognition. He's been playing great for a while.
Opie 308 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 Probably as good a chance as Osgood has to make team Canada. We may disagree on Howards future, but this was spot on analysis and funny as hell all at the same time!
shoe 165 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 keep an eye out for Brian Burke or some of the team usa scouts at red wing games.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted December 18, 2009 (edited) I understand Howard has been playing well as of late, but are there really this few American goalies in the NHL? It seems unusual that someone with less than a full season of NHL experience is even being considered for the job. Edit: after actually reading through the article it seems that Howard has a possibility only from the opinion of the article's author, and not anyone actually making up the US Olympic roster. DMAC 25 18 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 his stats are better than anderson's i think. i could be wrong but i'm think howards is better
Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 Howard may not be the third best US goalie in the NHL, but it's hard to argue he isn't the hottest out of the goalies mentioned. We all know how much a hot goalie can carry a team, unfortunately.
b-random 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 (edited) his stats are better than anderson's i think. i could be wrong but i'm think howards is better I doubt that, very highly. Maybe in 2014 or whenever the next Olympic games are, hopefully he's good enough to earn the starting position by then. RedArmy 4 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 how long before USA mgt have to make up their mind?
Hiei 192 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 For Howard to make it, he'd be above Anderson, Jon Quick in LA (who's also hot right now), and either a Healthy DiPietro or if he's still playing, Bob Esche. 2014 Maybe.
T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 how long before USA mgt have to make up their mind? The USA roster will be announced at the Winter Classic (and will be the last of the teams announced)
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted December 19, 2009 Doesn't even matter whether he should go or not, he won't. Not yet. But his time will come. This kid looks like the real deal. He's a great mix of stupidly good positioning and quick improvisational reflexes. That's rare. Barring some unforeseen stumbling block, he's going to be USA's goalie sometime in the future. When, I'm not sure. But sometime. I'm also not sure how the hell Robert Esche and Rick DiPietro are supposedly Olympic goalies. I'd take a drunk Jimmy Howard over those two. Shady Ultima 40 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 (edited) And Howard has a GREAT chance of making the Olympics this year. First we have to trade him to Carolina, then he has to get 4 straight shut outs... Edited December 19, 2009 by Shady Ultima

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 I doubt that, very highly. Maybe in 2014 or whenever the next Olympic games are, hopefully he's good enough to earn the starting position by then. Save Percentage: Howard-- 0.920 (11th in the league) Anderson-- 0.916 (15th in the league) Goals Against Average: Howard-- 2.27 (8th in the league) Anderson-- 2.68 (24th in the league) Wins: Anderson-- 16W in 30 starts (8th in the league) Howard-- 11W in 17 starts (16th in the league but a far superior win percentage to Anderson's) So I guess your very strong doubts were way off the mark. Howard's smoking him in every statistical category other than shut-outs. Sv% and GAA are the key stats for goalies and there's no question Jimmy's stats are superior in those areas. FinWing 26 Report post Posted December 19, 2009 That would be awesome for him but I'm not holding my breath. At the start of the season I don't think anyone here expected his name to pop up in the debate, just goes to show that he has stepped it up.
Guest zackmorris Report post Posted December 24, 2009 Bob Esche has been playing in Europe, he was with team USA in 02 and 06. Lucky for the US, they have some real goalies coming up soon. And as for Drake's assessment, that's very true but we're all leaving out the one variable that will put Anderson on the team and now Howard-rep. It's not so much about who is playing better now, it's that Anderson was a surprise hot goalie on a surprise hot team to start the year. That resonates in the minds of people for a good long time. Howard's also young and collectively we're all scared to death of messing with young players in scenarios like this.
