rage 24 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 I would be incredibly suprised if every single one of these posters berating the guy have never driven technically over the limit. They never said his B.A.C., and I would be willing to bet that at least a third of the people yelling at him have drinken when technically "over the limit". Dosen't really surpise me though. I played hockey vs his son Dean and he always came off as a cocky douchebag who used his name to get on teams he was nowhere near good enough for, and Chelios always seemed like an ass. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if there was one red wing that has ever taken steroids it would be Chris Chelios. Yeah, news like this always brings people to get on their high horse. I've been guilty of drunk driving in the past. Never busted (thank god) but I was young and didn't fully understand the possible consequences of my decision. It was probably the stupidest thing I've ever done (multiple times). Once I had a family and kids I fully understood and never did it again. Chelios is 50. He's a loser. wingnut40 176 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Would it be weird to say I'm embarrassed by this? Embarrassed for him, the Wings, and myself because I really liked him and considered Wings (or former Wings) to more responsible and all around better than other teams' players. Cheli this was really, really dumb...like really dumb.
Broken 16 381 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 (edited) Yeah, news like this always brings people to get on their high horse. I would think that any human would be on their high horse about it. It's a very dangerous crime. Not to mention he was speeding. So he wasn't some paranoid drunk going 30 and taking out bumpers. He was drunk and speeding, which makes him reckless on top of it. Drunk and reckless on YOUR roadway when all he had to do was call a cab. Edited January 6, 2010 by Broken

If I'm going to drink, it's when I'm home for the night. I don't do the bar thing. Not cool, Cheli. Not cool.
ben_usmc 253 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 The fact that it is common is exactly why it's such a big problem. I don't disagree that it is f***ed up, I mean especially at his age. I had done it countless times while in the marines and had our DD who was drunk himself crash my car into a tree going 50 (which was the final lesson for me) at his age he should have learned. With all that being said I'm just not suprised nor can I hold it against him, because I've done it in the past. Though I do think he should have learned by his age. thegerkin 189 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 My take on this is that Chelios did a very dangerous and douchebag thing. I don't care if his BAC was only 1/100 over the limit. It's still impaired driving. And yes, at some point, most of us have done the same thing. My personal experience was I was 21 and sober enough to realize it was stupid, but did it anyway. Twice on the way home I crossed the center line and almost hit someone. It scared the s*** out of me and I have NEVER done it since. Chalk it up to young and stupid, or just plain stupid. Chelios is 50 and I GUARANTEE this isn't the first time he or most NHLer's have driven impaired. He knows better and I'm glad he got caught. DWI/DUI is just stupid and a great way to ruin many lives. But, he's a superstar, so he'll get a little slap on the wrist and sign some autographs and all will be good

gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 That's really too bad for Chelios and his family. It's never easy making mistakes under a spotlight. Sure, the bottom line is that he brought it on himself, but people make mistakes. Fortunately for most of us, when we screw up it doesn't get printed in the paper. It's sad to read that these people do dumb things, but it's really just as sad if not more sad that celebrities mistakes are exploited for profit by the media. I'll say it again though, since it's the main issue here: drinking and driving is a stupid thing to do. I'm not saying it to vilify anyone, especially Chelios. He's learning the hard way now. Many of us enjoy going out and having a few drinks, but drinking and driving is just a stupid thing to do, no matter how unreasonable you might think the legal level to be at this point. I'm not always a fan of the government getting too involved in our lives, but on this issue it's simple to see that it's just a stupid thing to do, so I do hope they keep cracking down on people. And for the love of creation, DO NOT drink and drive down Woodward in Bloomfield Hills (or anywhere in Bloomfield Hills...) if you have any desire to stay out of jail. I've known more than a few people who made such a stupid decision and the judge in the area is as harsh as they come. You will do jail time, 30 days likely at the very least and you'll pay all the fines they can possibly impose on you. Just don't be stupid. Sleep in your damn car if you have to. It's not worth the mess you bring on yourself and it's not worth the risk you impose on others.

gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 The fact that it is common is exactly why it's such a big problem. The only thing scarier than that is that DUI's are becoming more common and thus people are taking them more lightly. While the fines are already high and the potential to do jail time there, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to both matters increasing, though jail time is really a drain on the system in many ways. Maybe they ought to raise the fines and if people don't have the cash, send them to jail on a work release and string them up on the roads fixing potholes. The roads here in Michigan could sure use some more everyday maintenance in addition to the incessantly closed highways...

thegerkin 189 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 I've heard from unreliable sources that they can even get you if you are sleeping in your car. I have nothing to back that up. Happened to my last roommate. Keys were in the ignition, but he had pulled over and shut off the engine and was going to sleep it off in a parking lot. But because his keys were in the ignition, I guess that was what done him in. Crazy.

gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 I've heard from unreliable sources that they can even get you if you are sleeping in your car. I have nothing to back that up. I've heard mixed things, and I'd certainly keep my keys out of the ignition. From what I've gathered knowing a few cops, I get the feeling that they wouldn't be likely to raise hell if they caught you sleeping it off in a car though. It's certainly not the best idea, but I think it's a far better option than driving. Unless you run into a real dick, I'd guess that the worst thing that would happen is that they'd take you to the station and throw you in the drunk tank for the night and send you on your way in the morning. Again, there are definitely dick cops out there with agendas that will try to screw everyone, but there are a lot of good cops out there too who will appreciate the fact that you're not stupid enough to head out on the road. They don't want to deal with the mess or screw anyone over any more than we want to get screwed. So if you're trying to take as much of a high road as you can in a s*** situation, there's a good chance you're not going to get screwed. But you know, a simpler solution would be to just make sure you have a DD or keep the drinking down. Or suck it up and call a taxi or friend. Just don't get on the road... Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 (edited) Allow me..... What a piece of s***. Having lost a friend to a drunk driver, I absolutely 100% cannot stand people who drink and then get behind the wheel of a car. I don't care who are what you are to me personally, if you drink and drive, you are 10 steps beyond stupid. Period. If any of you here have done it, read what I just wrote and don't like that.....I don't care. Do. Not. Care. I don't drink anyway, but if I did I sure as s*** wouldn't get behind the wheel of a car. I enjoy not being in jail and I enjoy being alive. BTW, to the person who said that stuff like this causes people to get on their high horse......yeah, I'm going to get on my high horse about this and I'm going to enjoy the nosebleed I get from the height. I do a lot of stupid s***, but none of it is illegal and could KILL someone. Edited January 6, 2010 by Electrophile

Stiffy 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Sorry, but this is beyond stupid. Think hard and probably all of us know someone who was killed by a drunk driver. No excuse, none at all. Of course he has money and lawyers and will probably spend more effort weaseling out of this instead of thinking about what a selfish irresponsible ass he was. Who cares whether he was a great player or a bum. As a human, this is stupid and low class.
