cjm502 165 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 ha well yeah. It seems like every time Lebda takes a step forward in his development two seconds later he takes two steps backwards. I feel like when Quincey was getting some time with the Wings he was already ahead then compared to where Meech is now. I'll just never understand why we'd hold onto Meech when he is so similar to Lebda when we had a very different and capable guy like Quincey as our other option. Quincey asked to be released because he was not getting a very good opportunity to flourish here. Kenny Holland being the good guy he is granted his request. Dallas originally picked him up, than he failed his physical. LA than seized the opportunity to take him.

I said then and maintain now, Lebda should have been the one exposed. At no point has Lebda been better than Meech, and they are similar players. What is the point of keeping a player with a ceiling of 6th defenseman whose best season was his rookie year over a player who could potentially develop into a #4 defenseman/PP specialist? Quincey had a higher ceiling, and was playing well but not as well as he could have, so should not have been left open either.
cjm502 165 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 I hadn't actually heard that. (the part about asking to be released) Link? Ken and Mick went over it last time we played against Quincey. I tried to find a link anyways, but had no success

Well, the way I understood the situation (if I'm remembering correctly) was that entering training camp Quincey wanted a full time spot and Holland said that by the end of camp and all the competition whoever (between him, chelios, lebda, and meech) least deserved would be waived. obviously they weren't waiving Chelios so it came down to one of the other three. I remember hearing that Meech out played him in camp and that could potentially be the case with Quincey failing his physical with Dallas. Maybe being waived and failing his phsyical woke him up. Who knows, maybe he wasn't approaching the game when in Detroit the same way he is now. But from what I remember Quincey didn't flat out ask to be released. I think Holland knew Quincey wanted to play and thus waived him because Babcock and the coaching staff didnt think he earned his spot on the roster.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 In an absolute sense Janik's nothing to write home about, but relatively speaking he's done a very good job and I'm happy he's on the team.

To be clear, he failed his physical with Dallas because a herniated disk on his MRI, not because he was out of shape or anything. It also could've been just a way for Dallas to back out of the trade, as the herniated disk didn't keep him from playing 72 games last season, so it couldn't have been that bad. Rick Zombos Ghost 82 Report post Posted January 6, 2010 Janik=Lillypad. He even pulls a pain-train bonehead give away once a game. Stay at home defensemen are not bad. We need one besides Stuart (who has had to move into a more offensive role). Keep Janik up.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted January 7, 2010 Meech kept his spot because he could play forward in a pinch. Lebda looked slightly better when he had Cheli babysitting him. Quincey failed to out-play either of them during training camp. Sucked, but that's what happens when you have too much of a good thing. As far as Janik- Can we keep him, Uncle Mike? Please? We'll take good care of him, honest!
