Someone brought up this great NY Times article on HF Boards about a lawsuit over ref Dean Warren's firing, and how the NHL evaulates its refs:

Well said by Burrows. Terrible calls by an absolutely awful referee. If you ask me, this idiotic f*** should be fined and fired.

This is the NHL. Bettman and Co seem incapable of admitting to any fault, as to do so would be tantamount to *gasp* admitting that the league management has some areas in which it could improve the game.

On the one hand calling out BS ref, and on the other sweeping it under the rug. In related news, Tim Donaghy is mad he did not have this type of support.

I burned a goalie in a beer leauge pretty badly, only to find out that he reffed in one of my other leagues. Sure enough he was reffing when I tied the game up with a one timer with less than a minute left and he skated right in front of me, looked me in the eye and yelled "NO GOAL!" as he waived it off with that ******* arm wave off move right in my face. Said my winger was in the crease. We lost the game. In the post game handshake the oppossing goalie told me he didn't know what the hell the ref was talking about, there was no one even close to crease when I scored.

Refs definitely have a hard job, but I never understand why you cannot comment on officiating or you'll be reprimanded or fined - in any league. It's stupid.

Yesterday on OTR on TSN, former NHL head of officiating Brian Lewis (and the man who hired Auger), stuck up for him and said in all the years he officiated, at all levels, he had never heard such an accusation.

And this; from kelowna dot com :

The National Hockey League will not punish referee Stephane Auger for his part in a spat with Vancouver Canucks forward Alex Burrows according to reports.

Yahoo! reporter Greg Wyshynski told a Vancouver radio station Tuesday night the NHL has completed its investigation and will not discipline Auger.

Give me a break -- another NHL ref outright admitted they do this (off the record, of course), just not when a game is in contention. We all know they do it.

Unless they literally had a mike zoomed in on that conversation there is no way to prove Burrow's accusation. "Hey, bad calls happen."

This is beer league crap, and while I can understand the NHL wanting to keep it all in-house, I hope it gets seriously looked at.

This league is ridiculous. And now, unfortunately, Burrows is going to be a marked man for the rest of the season...especially when Auger is reffing Vancouver games, which you KNOW he will be.

I'm frankly surprised to see so many people taking Burrows at his word.

Burrows isn't exactly what a might call a believable witness, so to speak.

He's one of the most despised pests in the game and frankly, I don't take him at his word because he's no Steve Yzerman or Nick Lidstrom or Joe Sakic. Without proof, all we have is a pest (although good player) who has a penchant for running around and taking shots at people behind a visor and diving more than Greg Louganis.

Is it possible this happened? Sure, that wouldn't surprise me.

However, you get back from the refs what you give them.

Burrows is a dick, always has been.

And all of the talk about integrity of the game here is absolutely hysterically funny.

Think about what may have started this according to Burrows. That Auger thought Burrows faked an injury to get a call and made him look bad.

Now that is something I believe 100% probably happened. Players fake and dive to get calls all the time. Aside of sucker punching somebody, taking dives is the most dispicable ******* bulls*** in hockey. I hate it. I hate people who take dives and try to play up their injuries to get calls. It is one of those things that bugs me so much its on par with bad drivers.

Burrows is a s*** and he probably did fake his injury so right there I would say he's got no respect for the integrity of the game so he can shut the f*** up about what the ref did.

Far as I am concerned, and considering Burrows character, I give Auger mad props to Auger for not taking a diving, faker's bulls*** and sending him a message that if you fake calls, it's going to cost your team.

As it should! Stop ******* faking NHLers. Stay on your damned feet!

I completely agree with you in regards to Auger, but you do realize the NHL is not only investigating this, but also meeting with Auger and the rest of the crew today?

I hate to be cynical, but I'm afraid that the meeting today will consist of Campbell saying, "For Pete's sake, Auger, don't tell them you're going to make bad calls. We have enough trouble covering for you guys as it is. Just go out there and do it. Don't tell them about it."
